Doug Gordon - 17 December 1944 - 21 May 2022

A Legend of Pool has been taken... Rest In Peace - Doug Gordon

It's with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Doug Gordon.

Many of you will have known Doug Gordon, particularly the older players, but even if you're one of the up-and-coming new to the scene younger generation, it's no understatement to say that our game wouldn't even be here today if it wasn't for Doug Gordon.

Born in Scotland, he was gifted with something special - a fearless ability to speak to anyone, to try anything, to think big, and demand more, and even a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease wouldn't slow him down.

It was Doug, in collaboration with Barry Hearn (now OBE), that got the big American pool ball rolling over here, quite literally, all those years ago. He was a true pioneer and student of the game and its history. He loved the sport of pool through and through, and it was Doug who started the original UK Pro 9 Ball Tour - the tour that eventually gave this website it's name.

It was the Pro9 Tour that led me to start playing pool when one day a friend from Portsmouth invited me to a Bowl-plex where they had some "new" tables. We walked in and the tables were huge like nothing we had ever seen before. We were going to give it a try apparently, but there was a crowd of people around the main table, and two very smart players in waistcoats battling it out.

One guy was playing the most outstanding shots I'd ever seen (I'd never even dreamed of a masse shot until then, and the other guy was just unbelievable). He never seemed to miss. We watched the entire game until it was finished, awe-struck and amazed by such a stunning display of quality pool.

It was a UK Pro 9 Ball Tour final, and the two players were Tommy Donlon and Ray Allard. It really was a terrific match. Donlon was playing some of the best pool of his life, and it was Allard's home club, and he was at the height of his trick-shot prowess. We were so impressed that we bought American pool cues within the week.

Ray introduced us to Doug in such revered tones, it would have been hard not be impressed, and we all played follow the leader - Doug taking us all to Spain for the 1999 World Pool Championship won by Nick Varner, and then to Cardiff for the first Matchroom Sport World 9-Ball Championship won by Efren Reyes.

We followed Doug across the UK as his Pro9 Tour visited everywhere from the delights of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Inverness, Kirkcaldy, Stirling, and Glasgow in Scotland, and the length and breadth of England from London, Manchester, Worthing, Cambridge, Milton Keynes, Solihull, Croydon, to Brighton, even at Leyton Orient football ground.

He didn't limit himself to the UK either - it's no exaggeration to say he knew every pool player and every snooker player in the world and there followed a long period when he organised massive tournaments internationally - World Championships in the United Arab Emirates, tournaments in Taiwan, the Philippines, and he even had close connections with royalty in Brunei.

A lot of people don’t know Doug was responsible for the creation of the World 8-ball Championship with his connections to the Sheikh in Fujairah.

He was a journalist for a while with a European cuesports magazine, and even owned Pot Black magazine before it was taken over by Clive Everton.

In the 70's he transformed a former computer center/office building in a tough working class area of Portsmouth into a thriving and very profitable snooker club.

So many players have expressed a debt of gratitude, like Imran Majid who said, "He was a good guy to me and did a lot for my career. He will be missed for a long time."

Frankly, if it happened in cuesports, Doug was there - rumour has it he used to manage pop bands in the 60's and that he was even in the studio when they recorded the "Snooker Loopy" song!

JOSHUA FILLER WINS 2022 UK OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP

Joshua Filler has won the inaugural 2022 UK Open Pool Championship at the Copper Box Arena, London beating Francisco Sanchez Ruiz in the final 13-7 live on Sky Sports in the UK, Matchroom Pool Facebook in the USA, Canada, Spain, and Italy, Viaplay in Scandinavia, and the Baltics, as well as Matchroom.Live in selected territories.

Joshua Filler 13-7 Francisco Sanchez Ruiz

FINAL BRACKET

Filler won the lag and won the opening rack in a sign of early nerves from Sanchez Ruiz. Sanchez Ruiz was left with a tricky jump over the eight to make the two, he proceeded to foul on the eight, and soon it was 1-0 to Filler. Routine break and runs in the second and third gave Filler a quick 3-0 lead inside 15 minutes. Filler was on the hunt for his second title in as many weeks in the Nineball arena, but he let Sanchez Ruiz back in in the fourth after narrowly missing the middle pocket when jumping to make the seven. El Ferrari rallied from there to win the resulting three racks to level at 3-3.

At 3-3, Filler had an opportunity at the table again on the one but couldn't do much with an attempted cut. Sanchez Ruiz ran out from there with an exquisite bank on the five ball the pick of the lot as he led for the first time at 4-3. A formulaic break and run in the eighth put El Ferrari ahead by two.

As much as both love the exhibition shot, the game was often deep-rooted in technical safety battles. The pick of it in the ninth as both Filler and Sanchez Ruiz hid the cue ball on multiple occasions away from the two. Sanchez Ruiz blinked first though after Filler played an expert safety that forced to kick the two only for it to meander down towards the bottom pocket and in ample range for Filler to clean up and cut the deficit to one at 5-4.

Filler played smart in the tenth rack to get the better of Sanchez Ruiz despite being hooked on the break. A pinpoint safety of his own left Sanchez Ruiz with work to do which inevitably opened up the table for the German to settle it and go level again at 5-5.

With the break back, Filler scratched in the 11th off it to put Sanchez Ruiz at the table. Sanchez Ruiz has played more matches than any other player this week and the tiredness wasn't showing through just yet despite the eight-ball rattling in the jaw to the point Filler was ready to get back up to the table. FSR led again at 6-5. Sanchez Ruiz soon built a two rack buffer and it seemed he could go on to run a few after the five pack that led him on his way to beating Shane Van Boening in the semi-finals.

Sanchez Ruiz was left looking for a lot of ships to align for him to make a two ball along the rail in the following rack at 7-5 and it just didn't happen. Filler did open the door again for Sanchez Ruiz though after missing the five ball, though that did not happen for the Spaniard as his counterpart got the better of him to be one back. A break and run in the 14th levelled it again at 7-7.

UK OPEN DAY 4 | ONLY 16 REMAIN AT COPPER BOX ARENA, LONDON

Albin Ouschan, Ko Ping Chung, Alexander Kazakis, and home favourite Jayson Shaw all went out of the inaugural UK Open Pool Championship at the Copper Box Arena, London. Only 16 remain as the $200,000 tournament heads into single elimination live on Sky Sports Action in the UK and Ireland, DAZN in the USA, Canada, Italy, Spain, Viaplay in Scandinavia, Poland, and the Baltics as well as Matchroom.Live and networks worldwide.

BRACKETS

It was a grueling day of action in one of London’s most iconic venues as the tournament went through three stages of Losers Round action and a further two rounds of Winners to get the final 16 who will now compete over three tables in Races to 11 to make Saturday evening’s quarterfinals.

One player who won’t be there is Ouschan who has been battling to keep his impeccable record at Matchroom events going. It started in the best possible way with a win over veteran Ralf Souquet but he came up against a resurged Robbie Capito of Hong Kong, China who played one of the matches of his career to knock out the two-time World Champion 9-0. Shaw headed into the day knowing he needed to win three ties to keep hopes of making the final two days on home soil, but it wasn’t to be as young Jonas Souto Comino of Spain came good in a hill-hill finish early on live on the Matchroom Pool YouTube channel. Souto Comino’s hopes of his best performance to date in a Matchroom event ended at the hands of Mika Immonen 9-3 swiftly after.

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz was dumped onto the Losers’ Side of the tournament on the opening day and has since then battled away to make the Last 16. The Derby City Classic 9-Ball winner sidestepped past USA Mosconi Cup hopeful Nicholas De Leon 9-3 before wins over Ping Chung and Wojciech Szewczyk to make it two Spaniards in the final stage. The ever-present David Alcaide has stayed on the winners’ side with relative ease all week but had his sternest tests of the week beating both Immonen and World Pool Masters semi-finalist Mieszko Fortunski 9-7 to be right in the picture.

World Champion Shane Van Boening continues to steamroller his way through the tournament beating Daniel Maciol 9-3 to be in the hat whilst Mario He’s remarkable week continued to defeat Thorsten Hohmann 9-3 after beating Ko Ping Chung 9-1 earlier on. World Pool Masters winner Joshua Filler breezed past one of the last remaining Brits Luke Rollison 9-2 with a golden break along the way to join He and Van Boening in the draw.

UK OPEN DAY 3 | KO PIN YI FIRST MAJOR CASUALTY

Ko Pin Yi became the first major casualty of the 2022 UK Open Pool Championship at the Copper Box Arena, London live on the Matchroom Pool Facebook and YouTube pages as well as Matchroom.Live as the field edges ever closer to the single-elimination stage.

LIVE SCORES

BRACKETS

It was a packed day in England's capital as 40 players were sent packing home with the biggest name coming in 2015 World Champion, Pin Yi. The Chinese Taipei star was sent to the Losers Bracket by Luke Garland yesterday and faced a potential three matches on day three to keep his UK Open journey going. Pin Yi beat Craig Brown early on 9-6 but came unstuck to South Africa's JJ Faul who put on what he described as the performance of his career.

Mieszko Fortunski reached the semi-finals of the World Pool Masters just a few weeks back beating Jayson Shaw along the way and the Pole moved past the Brit once again to keep on the winners’ half of the draw. Shaw faces a stern test tomorrow if he is to keep going with a potential three matches on the agenda to reach the Last 16 first in the form of Jonas Souto Comino of Spain.

Fans were treated to a breathtaking performance by 14-year-old Riku Romppanen who came from 8-4 down to beat Robbie Capito to remain in the competition and meet Skyler Woodward to keep his hopes going. Romppanen's journey will be one to remember with three wins over his three days but eventually came unstuck to Woodward despite pegging the two-time Mosconi Cup MVP back to 5-5 after Woodward led 5-0. The result leaving Woodward with tie against 2012 World Pool Masters champion Karol Skowerski to reach the Last 16.

Joshua Filler needs only one more win to reach the Last 16, the Killer doing a double on America's Chris Reinhold and Shane Wolford 9-5 and 9-1 respectively. FIller will come up against Britain's Luke Rollison who has battled his way through after overcoming World Pool Championship semi-finalist Abdullah Alyousef 9-7 in a memorable performance. World Champion Shane Van Boening is also in the same position as Filler after beating Juan Carlos Exposito of Spain and legend of the game Ralf Souquet to meet Poland's Daniel Maciol for a spot in the Last 16 tomorrow.

UK OPEN DAY 2 | BIG HITTERS PROGRESS WITH RELATIVE EASE

Day 2 of the UK Open Pool Championship at the Copper Box Arena, London live on the Matchroom Pool Facebook and YouTube pages as well as Matchroom.Live brought plenty of success for the top seeds as only Ko Pin Yi, Naoyuki Oi, and Eklent Kaçi came unstuck in Winners' Round 1.

LIVE SCORES

BRACKETS

The action began live on the Matchroom Pool Facebook with the two young guns of Lo Ho Sum and Mickey Krause head to head with Ho Sum looking to build on his runner-up finish at the World Pool Masters just a few weeks ago. Krause is far from a pushover though and the Dane showed his credibility and rise through the ranks to dispatch the Hong Kong, China player to Losers Round 2 in a 9-5 win.

Dennis Orcollo went up to Solihull, Birmingham between the World Pool Masters and the UK Open to keep in stroke playing in a local tournament which he won on Sunday evening and that decision seems to have paid off so far as he came good in a 9-4 win against Chris Seville of Great Britain.

One of the upsets of the day came on one of the back tables as 2015 World Champion Ko Pin Yi was on the end of a 9-4 loss to Luke Garland. Garland was only a few frames away from a World Snooker Tour card a few years back before defeat to UK Championship winner Zhao Xintong at the final hurdle and it showed his pedigree to run seven racks on the way to an 8-0 lead over Pin Yi. Pin Yi did come back but it proved too much of a hill to climb putting him into the next stage in the Losers bracket.

Oi is still in search of his first Matchroom title and his work will be cut out if he is to get rid of that hoodoo this week. The Japanese star fell at the hands of Pole Mariusz Skoneczny in the opening match of the day live on the Matchroom Pool Youtube. Kaçi also came missed out to Skoneczny's compatriot Daniel Maciol 9-6. Maciol will face Pijus Labutis in the next round on the winners’ side whilst Kaçi faces Rich Jones on the other side of the bracket to keep his hopes alive.

UK OPEN DAY 1 | SANCHEZ RUIZ AVOIDS EARLY EXIT FROM 6-0 DOWN

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz avoided an early exit coming from 6-0 down on the opening day of the inaugural UK Open Pool Championship at the Copper Box Arena, London live on the Matchroom Pool Facebook and YouTube pages as well as Matchroom.Live worldwide.

LIVE SCORES

BRACKETS

256 players descended on one of London's most iconic sporting venues for a piece of history as they gun to become the first player to claim the UK Open title and a share of the $200,000 prize fund as the opening round and Losers Round 1 saw the first 16 players leave the tournament and leave many in a perilous position with the remaining losers round matches set to get underway tomorrow morning ahead of Winners Round 1.

Fans were treated to two live streams for free wherever they are in the world thanks to the Matchroom Pool Facebook and YouTube pages as well as on Matchroom.Live and on betting websites around the world and they were not disappointed.

Sanchez Ruiz lost his opening match of the tournament against South Africa's Jason Theron from 6-3 up to face Ashik Nathawani in one of the opening Losers Round encounters to keep his spot in the tournament. The Spaniard has had a good year of it so far and is one of the Mosconi Cup Team Europe hopefuls, but it was nearly curtains as Nathwani took hold with a 6-0 lead and only three from victory, but Sanchez Ruiz rallied from that point onwards to put on the performance of the opening day in a dramatic hill-hill victory.

Joshua Filler Claims 2022 World Pool Masters Title

Joshua Filler has won the 2022 World Pool Masters beating Lo Ho Sum in the final at the Europa Point Sports Complex, Gibraltar live on Sky Sports, DAZN, Viaplay, and Matchroom.Live in selected countries for the first time.

FINAL

Joshua Filler (8) 9-6 Lo Ho Sum

SEMI-FINALS

Joshua Filler (8) 7-3 Ko Pin Yi

Mieszko Fortunski 5-7 Lo Ho Sum

Filler set up a final with Lo after coming from 3-0 behind to win the following seven racks to clinch a 7-3 victory against former world champion Ko Pin Yi at the start of the evening. The German claimed his first World Pool Masters crown in a 9-6 win to become one of very few to win the World Pool Championship, US Open Pool Championship, Mosconi Cup, World Cup of Pool, and World Pool Masters in their career at just the age of 24.

The opening rack didn't go to plan for Filler after winning the lag, he scratched off the break to hand Lo the early advantage. Breaking in the second, Lo was full of confidence as he rack the rack to lead 2-0 against the previous US Open champion. Into the third rack and Lo had a chance on the two but it was obscured by the seven. Filler duly got to the table and made it 2-1. Before too long, Filler was back on top turning it around to lead 3-2 and looking like putting on the performance that saw him down Dennis Orcollo in the quarter-finals 7-0. The Killer soon hit 4-2 at a breeze but this wasn't going to be as easy for him after he underestimated the speed of the table when playing safe on the two ball. That move was costly to allow Lo back at 4-3 and soon 4-4 with his first break and run of the match.

Lo's stroke was getting better and better and another break and run in the following rack put him back in front for the first time since 2-1. Filler was frozen to his chair as the road map became even clearer for Lo who broke and run again in the 11th rack to put a two-rack buffer between the pair, the shot of the rack coming on the seven after losing position on the cue ball briefly.

Filler got back at the table in the 11th after Lo missed a tricky two ball, but the current World Cup of Pool holder couldn't put pay by making the 2 7 combo. However, the rack wasn't done yet as Lo left himself with a horrible cut on the three. From there, Filler ran out the rest of the rack to be behind by one at 6-5.

The reputation of nerve and grit is what makes Filler one of the most feared players on tour and he was far from done in the contest as he ran the 12th rack to level again at 6-6.
