Immonen pots final nine ball.

Team Europe retained the PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup by the second widest margin in the history of the competition.

They trounced their American counterparts at the Hilton Hotel, Portomaso by an 11- 5 score line with Most Valuable Player Mika Immonen potting the final 9 ball.

It was a sweet moment for the 35 year-old as he had the same opportunity to bring the trophy home in Rotterdam two years ago but messed up with the finish line in sight.

This time he made no mistakes as he took to the table following a lacklustre safety escape from Shane Van Boening and ran through the table for a 5-3 win.

‘It seems I'm burying a few ghosts. I won the US Open where I had a tragic final in 2001, then I won the Japan Open where I had lost in the final four times in ten years and won that,’ said Immonen.

Europe on Brink of Mosconi Glory

Team Europe look set to retain the PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup for the first time in the event’s storied history as they took the Saturday evening session 2-1 to take a 9-5 lead into the final day at the Hilton Hotel in Portomaso, Malta.

Rodney Morris gave Team USA a massive shot in the arm in the opening match of the Saturday evening session as he won his first match of the tournament, defeating Niels Feijen 5-3 to reduce the European lead to two points.

Wins though for captain Alex Lely’s two lynchpins, Ralf Souquet and Mika Immonen, left Team USA reeling and needing to win six of Sunday’s seven games. There are two doubles and one singles match on Sunday afternoon and that may be enough.

Europe Gain the Upper Hand!

The European pairing of Mika Immonen (Finland) and England’s Mark Gray delivered a crushing blow to the heart of their American opponents as they came from 4-1 down to beat Jeremy Jones and Johnny Archer in a thrilling encounter at the Hilton Hotel, Portomaso, Malta.

A win for the USA would have left the match finely poised at 6-5 going into the Saturday evening session, but instead it means that Europe now have a three point lead and look solid favourites to retain the PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup.

The Americans got off to the worst possible start chasing a two point deficit as Rodney Morris and a silently imploding Earl Strickland were well beaten 5-1 by the consistent Ralf Souquet and Niels Feijen, who won their third consecutive doubles match.

Europe and USA share the spoils on Mosconi Day Two

Team Europe maintained their two point lead after day two of the 2008 PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup as Finland’s Mika Immonen took the final point of the session, a crucial 5-0 win over Earl Strickland in the captains’ pick match.

Immonen entered the arena coming off the back of a doubles defeat with Mark Gray but was confidence personified as he played some composed pool to defeat Strickland.

After winning the opener, Europe dropped the next two as Strickland came from 4-1 down to beat home town hero Tony Drago and then Jones and Archer defeated Immonen and Gray.

2008 Universities Pool Council Nine-Ball Pool Championships

A monster weekend of pool unfolded at Solihull Rileys with the 170 plus university players battling it out in this 9-ball singles tournament. The race to five format, single elimination rounds whittled the players down to the semi finals on the first day, with the tables redrawn each round from the last 32 onwards, and in the meantime, eliminated players could enter a fun Scotch Doubles event. Team matches will began Saturday morning and concluded on Sunday, and the bonus is that everyone was able to watch The Mosconi Cup on Solihull Riley's massive projection screen - pool heaven!

Europe takes an impressive first day lead in Malta

Team Europe, captained by Dutchman Alex Lely, enjoyed a runaway start to the PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup as they sped into a 3-0 lead before being pegged back in the final match.

Wins for the whole team in the first match of the competition followed by a doubles win for the Feijen/Souquet axis and then a great singles win for US Open champ Mika Immonen set them up nicely for the final three days of competition.

Only a 5-3 win for Strickland and Archer in the final game of the session saved a whitewash and it will give the Americans some hope when play resumes at 8.00pm tomorrow with two doubles and two singles matches.

Europe went into an early 2-0 lead in the opening match, the one and only game where all ten players compete.

The Last Four World Champions Relied On Predator Shaft Technology

Four of the last World Champions: Darren Appleton, Daryl Peach, Ralf Souquet and Niels Feijen battled their way to victory with the accuracy and consistency of a Predator shaft leading the way.

Using his Predator 314² Shaft, Darren Appleton, of Great Britain, took first place out of 128 of billiard’s top players worldwide in the inaugural 2008 WPA World 10-Ball Championship. The reigning 2007 WPA World 9-Ball Champion, Daryl Peach, of Great Britain, also used his Predator 314² Shaft to secure his title, which he will hold until the next tournament in 2009. Ralf Souquet, of Germany, won the 2008 WPA World 8-Ball Championship title with his Predator 314² Shaft, and Niels Feijen, of the Netherlands, used his Predator 314² Shaft to break his way to victory in the 2008 WPA World Straight Pool Championship.

“To compete at the highest level, consistency and precision are key. That’s why I made the decision to switch to the best shaft,” said World 8-Ball Champion, Ralf Souquet. “The Predator 314² Shaft helps me stay at the top of my game.”
