The weekend of the 12-14 December 2008 sees forty-six teams and over 170 university nine-ball players descend on Riley’s, Solihull to battle it out for the Team and Individual Championships. This event has grown dramatically in the last five years, and with a further nine teams competing compared with last season’s entry, the event now boasts the title of the biggest annual nine-ball event in the UK.
“The UPC is very proud of the growth of this event in recent seasons and to see it now as the biggest annual Nine-ball Pool tournament in the UK is quite amazing” said UPC Executive Chair, Dr Iorwerth Griffiths. He added “this is a testament to our excellent venue partner, Riley’s, Solihull and the enjoyment the players get at our events. The vast majority of the players are under 25 and with this being the biggest annual Nine-ball Pool event in the UK shows the contribution the UPC is making to the future of the discipline in the UK.”
Editor's note: In a last minute deal, The Pro Shop is pleased to announce an exclusive year long sponsorship deal has been struck with the UPC, and Pro9 is hoping to carry reports from as many of these events as possible.

| Ortmann bests Appleton at Anniversary 8 Ball Tournament in Spain |

9TH CEP ANNIVERSARY TOURNAMENT
Another great event in the December sunshine on the Spanish Costa del Sol.
Following the last Eurotour of the calendar year, 100 foreign players decided to stay on for the annual CEP 8 Ball event.
The entry was limited to 192 players as time was short and several people including some top Spanish players, ended up on the waiting list.
This is becoming the norm in December, in the Eurotour, over 70 players were disappointed as that too was full some weeks before the event.
For the 3rd time in 9 years, German Oliver Ortmann carried off the spoils, a beautiful trophy and 4000 euros.
Oliver had been looking strong all through the event, he was taking no prisoners and won 61 of the 83 games he played.
“Daz” Appleton also had a largely uninterrupted run through the tournament, because of a walkover in the first round he didn’t have to play as many games as Oliver but with only 22 losses in his 72 games, Daz also impressed the large crowd of spectators.

Spanish Eurotour Champion, Niels Feijen from the Netherlands Photo courtesy of Achim Gharbi, EPBF Press Office. Niels Feijen from the Netherlands wins the Spanish Euro Tour!
Niels Feijen has won his first Eurotour in 3,5 years. He was the player that got to the semi-finals most often in the same period so he must be feeling very happy and relieved (of the monkey on his back). The Spain Open, held in the Torrequebrada Hotel, in a beautiful set-up for both players and fans, always draws a big number of participants. This year, nearly two-hundred fifty players entered in an attempt to cash a part of the total €44K. Ralf Souquet had won the two previous Eurotours, after a three-year absence in the Eurotour winners circle... Was he going to score a triple? A number of players really sent some strong messages in the earlier rounds. Craig Osborne from the UK looked in-form with clear-cut wins over Muratore and Nicholas Otterman. In the last sixteen, Craig ran into crowd favourite, small of stature but with the greatest of strokes, Francisco Diaz-Pizarro... 'the No-Like-Safe-Matador'. Sandor Tot is treating the Eurotour fans to some up-tempo, aggressive 9-ball again. After a two-year sabbatical and the birth of a healthy son, he seems to have become stronger. He always played fearless and attacking, but now even more so. He reached the semi-finals, winning against Feijen, Petroni and Engert. Chamat was the terminator of both Diaz' and Tot's hopes.

World Team Wins! Thrilling Finale : World Team Upsets Team Philippines!
The World Team came back from behind the final day of the Quezon City Invasion against the awesome Filipino home team in a thrilling 9-8 finale fit for the history books. The event took place at the Tri Noma Mall and was also titled "The Grand Villar Showdown" in honor of host sponsor Senator Manny Villar who has become a staunch supporter of billiards in the Philippines. Premier management groups Bugsy Promotions, Puyat Sports, and Negros Stables helped organize the event under the sanctioning of the BMPAP. The Quezon Invasion paid out $60,000 in prize money between the two teams for 1st and 2nd place. The first team to win nine matches would be crowned champions in this race to seven games per match with alternating breaks.

Philippines reached the hill first but could not get over it, squandering three opportunities to do it to allow Team World to escape with a 9-8 win and rule the Q.C. Invasion: Quezon City-Philippines vs the World Grand VILLARDS Showdown Thursday night at the jampacked activity center of Trinoma Mall in Quezon City .
After playing catch-up in the first two days, the Filipinos came out smoking in the final day to steal the driver’s seat from the foreign invaders and looked on their way to winning this event presented by Senator Manny Villar’s VILLARDS: Tulong sa Pagsulong ng Philippine sports and the Quezon City government led by Mayor Sonny Belmonte and Councilor Ariel Inton.
After Warren Kiamco lost to Thorsten Hohmann, 7-4, in the finals day’s first match, the home squad raked in four consecutive victories – Francisco “Django” Bustamante edged Raj Hundal, 7-6; Efren “Bata” Reyes subdued Rodney Morris, 7-5; the foursome of Bustamante, Alex Pagulayan, Dennis Orcollo and Roberto Gomez prevailing over the quartet of Hundal, Yang Ching-shun, Mika Immonen and Wu Chia-ching, 7-6; and Gomez blasting Charlie Williams, 7-3 – for an 8-6 lead in their race-to-nine duel.
But just at it seemed that the Philippines will once again stamp another proof of the country’s dominance of the sport, everything went awry.

| The UK's very first Straight Pool Tournament? Well, nearly!!! |
MickeyFlynns American Pool 103 Mill Road Cambridge CB1 2AZ Tel: 01223 309 000 www.mickeyflynns.co.uk
Sunday 30 November 2008
Straight Pool or Ten Ball? You couldn't make it up!!!
All credit to Mickey Flynns for being bold enough to stage the UK's very first straight pool tournament. It was always going to be a risky affair, but apparently even riskier than we first thought, as a "straw poll" of the early birds revealed that most had only practiced straight pool for the first time this week and with only moderate success.
There were some notable exceptions. David Walsh claims to be a straight pool genius, and Imran Majid only practiced for a few hours earlier this week, but managed a very respectable 120 break, but the majority were fairly uncertain of the rules despite a quick briefing by the Tournament Director and there were plenty of questions to be handled during play.
BUT... (And here's the mad thing)... After the first round of 14.1 over-ran it's allotted time, the whole tournament has reverted to Ten Ball.. AND NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON ARGUED!!! Can you believe that of pool players?
Sure, everyone agreed it was a very weird thing to happen, to turn up for a straight pool event, and then it changes to 10-Ball after the first round, but even weirder is that there were no scenes of discord, just good humoured acceptance all round!

PHILIPPINES VS WORLD GRAND POOL SHOWDOWN
Quezon City, the city of stars, will have a constellation of the world’s brightest pool stars when it plays host to the much-anticipated Q.C. Invasion: Quezon City-Philippines vs the World Grand VILLARDS Showdown on December 2 to 4 at the posh Trinoma Mall.
Eight of the best Filipino cue artists, led by the sport’s living legend Efren “Bata” Reyes, will stake the country’s claim as the best billiards-playing nation in the planet against a selection of equally-potent from the rest of the globe in this event presented by Senator Manny Villar’s Villards: Tulong sa Pagsulong ng Philippine Sports, and the Quezon City government led by Mayor Sonny Belmonte.
“We are very proud and honored to host this exciting showdown between the best Filipino billiards players and their topnotch foreign counterparts,” said Quezon City Council Majority Floor Leader Ariel Inton, the chief proponent of the event, during the press conference yesterday at the Quezon City Hall.

Immonen & Pan Dominated An Awesome Field Photo courtesy of www.onthehill.jp Mighty Mika Invincible at All Japan!
Finland's mighty Mika Immonen has won the 41st All Japan Championships, prolonging a winning streak that started out in October and hasn't stopped yet.
Asia has been considered, in the new millennium, the continent with the strongest players. At this year's event, this field was littered with Asia's best with names such as Taiwan's World Champion Wu Chia Ching, Kuo Po Cheng, China's Li He-wen and Challenge of Champions Winner Fu Jianbo, Japan's former World 9-Ball Champion Kunihiko Takahashi, and Korean Champions Young Hwa Jeong and Seung Woo Ryu. Throw in western counterparts World 9-Ball and 14.1 Champ Thorsten Hohmann (GER), World 9-ball and 8-Ball Champ Ralf Souquet (GER), and USA top pros Rodney Morris, Charlie Williams, and Max Eberle. Then add in arguably the toughest country, the Phillippines, with Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamente, Alex Pagualyan, Ronnie Alcano, Dennis Orcullo, Marlon Manalo, Antonio Gabica, Warren Kiamco, Ramil Gallego, Lee Van Corteza, and Antonio Lining.
In this 128 man super elite field, even the hottest pool player in the world could easily settle for a top 10 finish and be happy. That is why currently Mika Immonen is the world's strongest player.
