The 2017 World Pool Champion Carlo Biado faced defeat against the Spanish Open champion Dang Jin Hu, who delivered an exceptional golden break to secure a 9-5 win, to knock out the accomplished Pinoy.

From one champion to another, the two-time World Pool Champion Thorsten Hohmann also exited the tournament in similar fashion, following back-to-back losses against Kledio Kaçi and James Georgiadis.

On the other hand, Shane Van Boening demonstrated a masterclass against the Saudi Arabian cueist Fahad Alharbi. Despite Alharbi securing a rack to level the score at 1-1, Van Boening went on an 8-rack charge to finish the game. Joining the "South Dakota Kid," UK Open champion Robbie Capito advanced to the winners' qualification after delivering a formidable performance against the young star Karl Gnadeberg. Capito breezed through the racks, finishing with a 6-9 carom shot to win the final rack and finish 9-3.

The second day also saw the two-time champion Albin Ouschan and 2019 champion Fedor Gorst struggle in the opening rounds. Ouschan lost the opening round against Fu Che Wei after failing a 3-9 combo at hill-hill, but bounced back in the following round with a 9-2 victory against Khalid Al Otabibi.

DEFENDING CHAMPION RUIZ OFF TO WINNING START

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz got off to the perfect start as he began the defence of his World Pool Championship title at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal City Sports Hall, Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 3-8 June.

In partnership with the Saudi Arabian Billiard & Snooker Federation (SABSF) and the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Sport, the crown jewel of the World Nineball Tour will be available through leading global broadcasters, including Sky Sports, SSC, Shahid VIP Sports, MENA, and DAZN.

The defending champion, Ruiz, began with a swift 2-0 lead against the Saudi Arabian Waleed Albalkhi on the TV table. However, his lead was cut short when Albalkhi stole the third rack with an excellent 5-9 combo. Undeterred, "El Ferrari" Ruiz accelerated through the subsequent racks to secure his place in the Last 64 stage.

On Table 1, Ko Pin Yi made a remarkable comeback after trailing behind 6-2 against the Filipino cueist Jeffrey Ignacio, who dominated the early rounds. Rack 9 proved to be the turning point, as Ko Pin Yi regained his momentum with a spectacular jump shot on the 2-ball after overcoming a hook. Although Ignacio managed to level the score in rack 14, Ko Pin Yi regained control, clearing the final racks to also reach the Last 64.

Jayson Shaw, the 2024 Team Europe Mosconi Cup captain, delivered a classic 'Eagle Eye' performance, triumphing over Jeffrey Roda in the opening round. Roda missed a crucial chance in rack 10, allowing Shaw to fluke the rack. Shaw then executed two break-and-runs to reach the hill, claiming his third and final consecutive rack.

Gareth Potts Renews Sponsorship Contract With Strachan Cloth

Advertisements
Considered as one of the best pool players of his generation, The 4-time World English Eightball Champion and 3-time World Chinese Eightball Champion just renewed his collaboration with Strachan, the World’s leading brand of Snooker, English and Chinese pool cloths.

Gareth Potts Renews Sponsorship Contract With Strachan Cloth

Born in England in 1983, the one called “The Golden Boy” by his fans and fellow opponents started playing pool at a very early age at his parents’ pub. Standing on a crate at 7 years-old, he was already hitting his first balls and learning how to play English Eightball. It didn’t take long for his talent to be noticed and he quickly managed to get his first sponsorships. He decided to quit school to fully practice and at the age of 17, Gareth won his 1st Junior World Pool Championships.

After winning these Junior World Championships a 2nd time in a row, his professional career was definitely launched. Gareth Potts claimed 3 World Eightball Championships between 2005 and 2008 and became a Legend in English pool. This is when he decided in 2009 to change discipline and to consider playing Chinese pool, also called Heyball.

In 2013, Gareth Potts won his first World Chinese Eightball Masters after beating Chris Melling during the finals. Success continued the following year with a 2nd World Chinese Eightball Masters title, which he won a 3rd time in 2017. In March, Gareth Potts finished 5th at these Masters organized by Joy Billiards who also renewed their sponsorship contract with Gareth Potts.

The Art Of The Pool Shark

Advertisements

The Art Of The Pool Shark

Throughout human history, there have been many hustles, some more respectable than others, but the art of the pool shark has transcended generations and language barriers. In the US and UK, billiards and pool tables became widespread in saloons and bars throughout cities and the Wild West in the mid-19th century. Within the space of a few years, pool sharks started to ply their trade against unwitting patrons.

Hustles were more common before the internet, when people weren’t as privy to the tricks people would play. Saloons and bars are places where skilled players are often found in pool games. Similar ploys occurred in card-based casino games, like poker hustles or card-counting in blackjack.

Although card-counting practices in blackjack later moved to traditional, land-based casinos before the rise of blackjack online, there was still a skill to it. If a player was found employing card counting at a blackjack table, they would be asked to leave pretty quickly. Although there are also some dark arts involved in pool sharking, there’s also a big chunk of skill involved, too.

Dynamic Billard St Johann Open - Soufi is Champ in Austria

MOHAMMAD SOUFI, THE Germany-based Syrian, claimed his second DYNAMIC BILLARD Euro Tour title as he got the better of Tobias Bongers by 9-6 to take the Dynamic Billard St Pongau Open. Bongers had seemed to have done the hard part earlier in the day as he ended Joshua Filler's long and successful Euro Tour streak and then ousted Mieszko Fortunski from the tournament.

However, Soufi's speedy all-out aggression and devil-may-care play won the day for him as he entertained a sizeable crowd in the arena. Having recently acquired new playing equipment, Soufi seemed to have adapted to it in no time and what he occasionally lacked in positional play, he more than made up for with unerring pocketing.

Commented Soufi, “I'm feeling very good about this event. This is the second time for me but on the Thursday before the tournament started, I had a call from my family that my father was taken to hospital. Today he got out and I promised him I will give my best for him and I'm happy to have won this tournament for my father.

“Before the match he was at home and said he would watch the game. THE haven't seen my family for 11 years so it was good to win for them.”
