THE 8 BALL division at the 2023 Dynamic Billard European Championships played out this evening and there were gold medals for Germany (two), Finland and Norway. The Tampere Exhibition and Sports Centre was filled with a sizeable crowd and the atmosphere added to some of the drama on the tables.

Wheelchair star Jouni Tahti delivered the goods for his sizeable number of supporters with a win over old adversary Henrik Larsson, while 18 year-old Dennis Laszkowski demonstrated the sheer strength of European junior pool by coming through a tough men’s field. Tina Vogelmann secured her second gold of the Championships while Emil-Andre Gangflot produced an astonishing comeback to claim the Under 23 crown.

The men’s final was a classic battle of youth versus experience as 18 year-old Dennis Laszkowski went up against the 38 year-old Pole Mateusz Sniegocki (Poland). The young German won the lag, elected solids and comfortably worked his way through the table to take the opener.

Sniegocki, with a gold and a silver to his name from previous European Championships, levelled things up in the second game. A dry break from Laszkowski got the Polish veteran back to the table but a missed slow roll on the 9 ball, ended his visit. There were some positional shots involved, but Laszkowski cleared the solids to regain the lead at 2-1.

Laszkowski quickly got back to the table and looked set but he snatched at the 1 ball which saw it miss to give his Sniegocki the opportunity. The problem ball was the orange stripe which was only available to the left centre pocket. He managed to nudge a couple of stripes free and despite never really having full control of the white, he finished the rack off very nicely for 2-2.

DYNAMIC BILLIARD EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023
Golds For Regli, Ivanovskaia And Brajkovic

Reporter: Luke Riches on behalf of the EPBF

THE 10 BALL division at the annual Dynamic Billard European Championships concluded today in Tampere, Finland and there were hard-won golds for Switzerland, Germany and a first-ever for Slovenia. It was discipline No.2 in the none-day festival of pool and in the men’s division, Ronald Regli (Switzerland) defeated Germany’s Stefan Kasper 8-4 in a good quality match where little separated the two antagonists in open play but where a couple of dry break shots conspired to undo Kasper’s hopes.

A former German national snooker champion without much of a form-line on nine foot tables, Kasper won the lag and dropped three balls from the break. He ran into trouble as the 5 and 9 locked themselves together and couldn’t do anything with it to leave Regli to mop up and take the opening rack.

Regli made four balls from his opening break shot and made plain sailing with the rest of the table to open up a two-rack lead. He got back to the table in the next but a positional error forced an easy safety which Kasper was able to successfully extricate himself from. They went back and forth before the German gave Regli the opportunity to clear a fairly difficult table for a 3-0 cushion.

Regli found himself hooked on the 1 ball in the next and played a tidy containing safety. Kasper had the first pocketing chance of the rack and gave his confidence a real boost as he ran out to get on the scoreboard.

EKLENT KACI IS 2023 UK OPEN POOL CHAMPION

Eklent Kaçi has won the 2023 UK Open Pool Championship beating defending champion Joshua Filler 13-4 in the final at the Copper Box Arena, London live on Sky Sports in the UK, DAZN in the USA, Spain, and Brazil as well as on Sport1 in Germany, and Matchroom.Live in Albania.

RESULT
Joshua Filler 4 - 13 Eklent Kaçi

Filler won the lag but scratched from the break to leave Kaçi at the table to clear up before a break and run in the second put the Albanian up by two early doors. Into the third and Kaçi missed the one to allow Filler to hook his opponent. From there, the table opened up for Filler to come in and run out for 2-1 and soon with a break and run that was 2-2.

Early on, there was uncharacteristic errors from both sides with both finding their feet in the contest. Kaçi took the next two racks to lead 4-2 with a break and run in the sixth to leave Filler two behind once again. Little could split the pair and a dry break in the following rack brought Filler in to be one behind and then level with his own dish up. Filler's dry break at 4-4 led to Kaçi back at the table to take the resulting two racks and nearing the halfway stage.

The contest was well and truly simmering nicely.

Kaçi knew he had to do something special to tame the killer in Filler and he did that with an excellent effort to run out in the ninth after a dry break from Filler before a four-pack put the Albanian in firm control of the contest at 10-4, three more for victory and a maiden Nineball title in a run that included two combos on the nine to be in the ascendancy with the foot down on the throttle.

At 10-4, Filler was afforded a rare opportunity at the table but he saw his jump effort on the three wide of the mark and Kaçi swooped in once again to be two away from victory.

FILLER AND KACI TO CONTEST 2023 UK OPEN POOL FINAL

Joshua Filler and Eklent Kaçi will contest the 2023 UK Open Pool Championship final at the Copper Box Arena, London live on Sky Sports from 6pm UK time and DAZN in the USA, Spain, and Brazil as well as on Sport1 in Germany and Matchroom.Live in Albania.

Semi Final Results
Joshua Filler 11-1 Ko Pin Yi
Eklent Kaçi 11-5 Skyler Woodward

It was an afternoon that few could have predicted with World Pool Masters winner Ko Pin Yi torn apart by an imperious Filler who was looking to stamp his authority on the tournament he won 12 months ago. Filler put on a clinic throughout with Ko struggling for any sort of table time as the German gathered ahead of steam with an air of calmness that wouldn't suggest it was a semi-final of a Matchroom major.

UK OPEN 2023 | WOODWARD, KACI, KO PIN YI AND FILLER REACH SEMIS

Skyler Woodward has knocked World Nineball Tour No.1 Francisco Sanchez Ruiz out of the 2023 UK Open Pool Championship at the Copper Box Arena in London to reach the semi-finals live on Sky Sports in the UK, DAZN in the USA and Italy, Viaplay in Scandinavia, Baltics, Netherlands, and Poland, Sport1 in Germany and broadcasters worldwide including Matchroom.Live.

BRACKET / LIVE SCORES

Woodward looked imperious against the World Champion and much like the player fans across the world have come to love. The two-time Mosconi Cup MVP grabbed the game by the horns despite losing the opening rack, Woodward proceeded to take the following five and be halfway towards victory putting the onus truly on Sanchez Ruiz to respond. It seemed due time that a comeback would be made by Sanchez Ruiz but Woodward kept on imposing himself in the contest. At 5-2 down, Sanchez Ruiz left the one ball hanging from a jump and Woodward came in only for the former to steal the rack and send a sign this was not done yet.

Errors are few and far between in Sanchez Ruiz's game but Woodward was forcing him in corners that were tough to get out of and as the sole American left in the field, he wanted to ensure that would remain the case going into the final day. Sanchez Ruiz's game wasn't lacking, Woodward was just too good. Woodward went on from there to win the next five racks and lodge a huge win on his CV and reach the UK Open semi-finals where he will face Eklent Kaçi next.

UK OPEN 2023 | FILLER'S TITLE DEFENCE GATHERS PACE

Joshua Filler's mission to defend his UK Open Pool Championship title gathered pace at the Copper Box Arena in London with a 10-6 win over Riku Romppanen in the Last 16 live on Sky Sports in the UK, DAZN in the USA and Italy, Viaplay in Scandinavia, Baltics, Netherlands and Poland, Sport1 in Germany and broadcasters worldwide including Matchroom.Live.

BRACKET / LIVE SCORES

Filler knew he would have to bring his A-game if he was to see past Romppanen with the Fin becoming the youngest-ever player to reach the Last 16 of a Matchroom event. Romppanen looked unfazed early on and right at home under the TV lights to take the opening rack before Filler started to show his prowess. The stock of Romppanen has been ever-growing over the last 12 months but against Filler it did prove to be much tougher going. Filler's experience in the end showing to keep his opponent at arms length as he came through 10-6 to reach the evening quarter-finals against Mieszko Fortunski.

Laaksonen And Vogelmann Take Opening Golds

FINLAND’S KIM LAAKSONEN AND GERMANY’S TINA VOGELMANN are the straight pool champions at the Dynamic Billiards European Championships, as they both came through close run matches to claim gold in Tampere. Despite the varying races, both matches finished almost simultaneously as cheers rang through the arena and Laaksonen needed to compose himself for match ball.

After the match, a clearly ecstatic Laaksonen said, “I mean it’s incredible. I’ve never had this feeling before. I’d won a couple of bronze medals and one silver so yeah, it feels amazing. I was thinking, I can’t do anything here as Yannick ran 91 balls in about 15 minutes but then he gave me one chance and I ran a 79. I’m so shocked!

“I’ve never been so nervous in my life for those last few balls. My hands were shaking, my legs were shaking but it was fun though. What else can you hope, winning in your home country – it’s perfect!”

UK OPEN 2023 | HOME FAVOURITE SHAW OUT AS WILSON AND MELLING SHINE

Home favourite Jayson Shaw crashed out of the 2023 UK Open Pool Championship at the Copper Box Arena, London as World Snooker Tour star Gary Wilson and other Brit Chris Melling shone to reach the Last 16 live on Sky Sports in the UK, DAZN in the USA, Viaplay in Scandinavia, Baltics, Netherlands and Poland as well as Sport 1 in Germany and Matchroom.Live in countries without a broadcaster.

Shaw came up against a fierce competitor in Ko Ping Chung who was all to strong for the Brit as he powered through to the final stages 10-2 to end the dream of a big win on home soil. There is plenty of hope for Britain's Wilson and Melling though who came through testing days to book maiden weekend berths a the UK Open. Wilson playing in only his third-ever World Nineball Tour event got the win of his journey so far with a 10-6 triumph over Naoyuki Oi before dismantling Anthony Brabin 10-4 to set up a tantalising tie with Francisco Sanchez Ruiz tomorrow afternoon.

2023 UK OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP | ONLY 64 REMAIN IN LONDON

Only 64 players remain after day three of the 2023 UK Open Pool Championship at the Copper Box Arena, London with the likes of Albin Ouschan, Alexander Kazakis, and Sanjin Pehlivanovic all knocked out ahead of the single elimination stage live on Sky Sports, DAZN, Viaplay, and networks worldwide.

Ouschan always had work to do if he was to make the single elimination stage but his losers side run was swiftly halted by Vietnam's Nguyễn Anh Tuấn 9-5 who himself had fallen into the losers bracket after a tight defeat earlier in the day to defending champion Joshua Filler 9-7. Pehlivanovic fell to Finland's former national champion Jani Uski in the losers qualification stage whilst Kazakis' run was ended by Fedor Gorst.

WNT No. 1 Francisco Sanchez Ruiz was handed a shock defeat by Germany's Fitim Haradinaj 9-8 but bounced back to knock out Sullivan Clark 9-4 in one of the notable defeats in the winners qualification stage. Gorst also ended up there after coming across an imperious World Pool Masters semi-finalist in James Aranas but recovered with a win over Kazakis as mentioned earlier. Former World Pool Masters runner-up Lo Ho Sum meanwhile got a markable win over Chang Jung-Lin to send the Chinese Taipei star to the other side of the draw and lose his seed number.

Niels Feijen, Skyler Woodward, Alex Pagulayan, David Alcaide, and Mario He were among some of the big names to pull through in the losers qualification round to avoid an early flight home before crunch time. Feijen saw off 2012 World Pool Masters winner Karol Skowerski comfortably whilst it was the same fate for Alcaide beating Ashik Nathwani 9-4. Tyler Styer made it through the same stage despite being knocked to the losers side by 14-year-old prodigy Walter Laikre of Sweden. It was Woodward who then got revenge for his compatriot by beating Laikre in a high-quality contest 9-7 to book his own place in the Last 64.

2023 UK OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP | SANCHEZ RUIZ AND FILLER AMONGST WINNERS

World Nineball Tour No. 1 Francisco Sanchez Ruiz and defending champion Joshua Filler both sailed through to Winners Qualification at the second-ever UK Open Pool Championship taking place at the Copper Box Arena, London live on Sky Sports, DAZN, Viaplay, and broadcasters worldwide.

Bracket / Scores

Sanchez Ruiz came into the tournament looking to go one better than defeat to Filler in last year's final and the World Champion got off to the ideal start beating Bash Maqsood and Matthew Rigley by the same scoreline of 9-1 to progress through at a canter. The same can also be said for Filler who saw off Jaspal Bamotra 9-2 and then Kostas Koukiadakis in a whitewash win.

Albin Ouschan fell into the losers side yesterday and continued his ascent to find Losers Qualification with two wins and only one rack lost in the process. The likes of two-time Mosconi Cup MVP Skyler Woodward and Canadian great Alex Pagulayan were amongst those to join Ouschan on the wrong side of the draw after opening round defeats with the former missing out hill-hill to Vagelis Stefanopoulos whilst Pagulayan was well beaten by Liu Ri Teng of Chinese Taipei.

Home hopes in Jayson Shaw and Imran Majid joined the likes of Chris Melling and Gary Wilson in Winners Qualification with straightforward days.
