FRANCISCO SANCHEZ RUIZ WINS 2022 US OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz has won the 2022 US Open Pool Championship at Harrah's Resort, Atlantic City beating Austria's Max Lechner 13-10 in the final to shoot to World No.1 on the Live Nineball World Rankings taking home the $50,000 first place prize and becoming the first Spaniard to win one of pool's oldest majors.

Rack 1 - Sanchez Ruiz 0-1 Lechner - Lechner won the lag before taking the opening rack in a break and run to curb any early nerves in the biggest match of both players' careers.

Rack 2 - Sanchez Ruiz 0-2 Lechner - The Austrian doubled his advantage soon after with another break and run, laying down a real warning sign in the process of how he would attack the contest.

Rack 3 - Sanchez Ruiz 1-2 Lechner - After a brief safety exchange Lechner looked to be in to establish a 3-0 lead at the first commercial but a missed seven ball later and Sanchez Ruiz was on the board for the first time in the contest.

Congratulations to Kev Simpson - 9 Ball Pool Series Event Champion

Just a few short weeks after our heatwave, Autumn has arrived and 47 keen cueists made their way to a breezy RIley’s in Solihull. It was the final regular event of the season and after today, November’s grand finals would have its participants decided. There was all to play for!

The first few rounds were tight, with no less than five matches all going hill-hill in round 1.

Matt Hyden looked to be feeling good early on, racing to a 7-2 win over Szymon Rodewald.

Tashunka Witko Fishonahook also sent an early message of intent, sending Tom Emes over to the losers’ side with a convincing 7-1 win. Likewise Ashik Nathwani managed to sail through two rounds conceding only one rack, beating Navid Mohammed 7-0 and Andy Lacey 7-1.

Dave Hopkin battled hard, losing out closely to Kev Simpson 7-6 after a storming 7-0 victory against GJ in the first round. He continued making his way through the field, until coming up against a much-improved Matt Ross, who edged out Dave in a hill-hill game.

Luke Hart was cueing well too, freshly recovered after losing handily to Andy Carter in Leicester recently. Unfortunately, whilst he didn’t meet his Crash-Bang nemesis again he did come up against a dominating Kev Simpson, who cruised into the quarter-finals 7-0.

Ramesh Gokhul takes home the 3rd trophy of our 2022 Tour!

Reporter: Andrew Phan
Photographer: Ciprian Dandu

The 8-Ball Autumn Open welcomed 32 players to battle it out for a top prize of £500 and a place in the Masters Final later this year.

Tom Staveley, the winner of the 10-Ball Summer Open was a late entry, originally not interested in an 8-ball tournament but entered anyway as he “hates the game but hates not competing more” - a true competitor’s spirit that despite starting slow going 4-0 down against Mark Foster in his first match.

He went on to win his group with 3 wins then showed continuously improving form to reach the final. But it’s Ramesh Danny Gokhul, who has been dominating our weekly tournaments that brings his form to this event.

Philippines Are Predator World Teams Champions

Reporter: Predator Group
Photography: Predator Group

Philippines defeated Great Britain 3-0 in the final in Klagenfurt, Austria to be crowned 2022 Predator World Teams Champions, eight years after finishing runners-up the last time the event was staged.

The team of Rubilen Amit, Carlo Biado and Johann Chua won 4-3, 4-3, 4-1 against the British trio of Kelly Fisher, Jayson Shaw and Darren Appleton. Both Biado and Amit were part of the silver-medal winning team of 2014, when they lost to China in the final.

Philippines had reached this year’s final with a shootout victory over Germany, who fought back from 2-0 down to force the decider. Britain’s semi-final was against Chinese Taipei, who were defeated 3-1 with Shaw in practically good form for his nation.

The final was much closer than the scoreline might suggest; the first two sets - women’s singles and a men’s match contested by Shaw and Biado - both finished 4-3, before the victory was completed by Amit and Chua in a 4-1 mixed-doubles win over Fisher and Appleton.

“It feels amazing to be champions,” said Amit. “We're, we're very, very happy, and very and relieved. Finally, no more matches, we can rest and just enjoy it and enjoy Austria and Klagenfurt!

“Last time we placed 2nd and now we are finally the champions. I am very happy that I have Johann and Carlo as my teammates because they are awesome, they are very good players.”

Ko Pin Yi Rises Into World Top Ten After APF Asian 9-ball Open Win

Ko Pin Yi Rises Into World's Top Ten After APF Asian 9-ball Open Win

Ko Pin Yi has moved inside the world's top ten on the Live Nineball World Rankings after claiming The APF Asian 9-Ball Open title beating James Aranas in the final 13-11 in Singapore live on the Matchroom Pool social channels as well as on the APF feeds, Matchroom.Live and broadcasters across Asia.

UPDATED NINEBALL WORLD RANKINGS

The 2015 World Champion knocked out US Open runner-up Aloysius Yapp, Masato Yoshioka, and Johann Chua on the way to a memorable victory that sees Ko rise inside the top ten on the Live Nineball World Rankings thanks to the 10,000 Singapore Dollars first place prize.

Aranas showed guile and guts throughout as he reminded the world what he is capable of but in the end, it proved not to be enough to pip an imperious Ko who came from behind meaning the Filipino settled for 5,000 Singapore Dollars and second spot.

Ko has been back playing in Europe this year and acknowledged it made a difference playing closer to home: "The difference between Asian and European style in play is very different but despite that, I still had to be performing at my very best to win the tournament. I felt less pressure with less travel and being able to communicate with people in Mandarin so I felt a lot more relaxed and confident."

Aranas Shows Up Bongay, Enters Semis of Asian 9-Ball Open

Reporter: Marlon Bernardino

James "Dodong Diamond" Aranas toppled Lauro Bongay, 11-2, in a duel of the fancied Filipino bets to barge into the semifinal round of the 2022 APF (Asian Pool Federation Ltd) Asian 9-Ball Open tour at the Aspire Recreation Centre in Singapore, Saturday night.

Aranas taking a 6-0 lead in the rout of Bongay thus moved to the semis where he will meet Naoyuki Oi of Japan.

Oi subdued Anthony Raga, 11-5, preventing an all-Filipino semifinal.

Aranas’ win opened the possibility of an all-Filipino final in the inaugural edition of the tournament after Johann Chua also made it to the semifinals in the other side of the bracket.

Chua dismantled Robbie Capito of Hong Kong, 11-10, in the quarterfinals early in the day.

Chua will meet Ko Pin Yi of ChineseTaipei in the other semi-final showdown. Ko waylaid Masato Yoshioka of Japan, 11-4, in other quarters-final match-ups.

Chua is fresh from winning the gold medal in the 9-ball pool competition during the Southeast Asian Games held in Hanoi, Vietnam last May.

Sunday 14 August 2022

Congratulations to Gary Bullocke - Penultimate 9 Ball Pool Series Event Champion

It was the penultimate main event of the season and despite the glorious hot weather from our continued heatwave, 38 dedicated pool players made their way to Solihull for a day of competitive action, high-standard pool and the glorious, welcoming hospitality of Steve, the Riley’s Solihull manager.

The draw threw up some interesting early-round clashes. Anthony Bevan battled through Joe Wall 7-5, and Bash Maqsood got through an early tester in Ryan Helm by the same score. Only one match went hill-hill early on and it was Bash again, this time being on the receiving end of the scoreline against Adam Lewis.

It’s always interesting how there’s usually a high number of local clashes - players used to skirmishing together on a weekly basis meeting for higher stakes in tournament play. Samer ‘The Tony Fry Slayer’ Al Iraqe was too hot for Ryan Coton on the day, Anthony Bevan fell 7-5 to Coton senior, and Jon McAllister edged out Luke Garland in an early battle of the giants. Meanwhile, tour founders Daryl Garland and Andy Carter met over on table 13, with Andy bringing his usual crash-bang style of play to proceedings and Daryl struggling for form. Loser to the tournament desk please!
