Each year at the World 9-ball Championship seems to bring pool fans a revelation, a new talent who makes his mark on the scene with such aplomb and style that you just know that big time success is surely in this young man’s future. This year in Doha it only took until the beginning of day 2 for one such player to arrive.
If the results of Day 3 at the 2015 World 9-ball Championship are any indication, change in the sport of pool is most definitely in the air.
Today’s three sessions were given over to all winners’ side matches in the 16 groups with 32 spots available in the coveted single elimination round of 64, which begins on Wednesday. Losers in Monday’s matches knew they’d be given another chance to advance on Tuesday so the brutal pressure of judgement day, where every match is do-or-die, wasn’t quite as bad. Still, five former World 9-ball champions and the current defending champion all had chances to advance today. All lost and will have to come back again for one final go on Tuesday.
It was an excellent day for the Philippines, which sent five players through, as well as China and Taiwan, which each saw four of their players advance to the knockout rounds.
With the absence this year of legends Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante, Filipino overseas workers in Qatar haven’t turned out in quite the numbers that they have in the past to watch their fellow countrymen do battle. Still, Filipino fans are starting to warm up to the superb talents that are clearly ready to take their own place on the big stage.

Each year at the World 9-ball Championship seems to bring pool fans a revelation, a new talent who makes his mark on the scene with such aplomb and style that you just know that big time success is surely in this young man’s future. This year in Doha it only took until the beginning of day 2 for one such player to arrive.
Singapore’s 19 year old Aloisius Yapp has been on the international scene for about a handful of years, but was never really noted for much more than an interesting sounding name. Then late in 2014 the teenager pulled off his biggest success to date; capturing the WPA World Junior 9-ball Championship in Shanghai.
Still, while winning the junior world title is quite the accomplishment, it’s a whole different ball game playing and winning against the big boys. But today at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha, Yapp showed he truly has the goods to be a serious star on the world pool scene. Paired against World number 2 Darren Appleton in a race to 9, first round match in group play, Yapp put on a memorable performance, taking everything the multi-titled world champion could give and dishing out a beating of his own, winning the match going away, 9 - 5.
Rest assured this result was not a fluke, or the result of Appleton having an off day. The English great actually played a near flawless match. But he was up against an opponent who had an answer for everything thrown at him. On top of terrific shot making, Yapp also showed an ice cold demeanor and confidence that belied his years. The Singaporean led from the start and turned the screws on Appleton seemingly at will. When it was over, Appleton suddenly found himself one loss away from a shock exit, while Yapp was basking in the tournament’s biggest upset.

Like all the top players, Canada’s John Morra just wanted to get out of the starting gates on Day 1 of the 2015 World 9-ball Championship with a win. A loss on the first day of group play can be a total downer as you’re now suddenly faced with a pressure packed, do-or-die match in the double elimination format. If you don’t get your head in the game and your game in gear, you can quickly be headed for the exits in a New York second, you’re dreams of pool glory gone for another 12 months.
That’s the prospect the 26 year old from Toronto surely faced as he found himself down 6-1 and then 7-3 and playing miserably in his opening race to 9 match against Austria’s tough Mario He. Morra, however, has built up a steady stream of high finishes in the last 18 months and understood that winning in championship pool often requires patience, a positive attitude, and the ability to pounce when you’re opponent shows even the slightest bit of weakness.
And so when the big Austrian made a few mistakes, and showed his disgust with himself, Morra took it as his cue that he had life remaining. Slowly Morra fought back, gained confidence, while He became more frustrated with the mounting mistakes. Tied at 8-8 Morra had the Austrian by the throat, played a lockdown safety, and won the match 9-8.
“I was down 7-3, I just couldn’t find my stroke,” a clearly pumped Morra said after match. “I was getting some bad rolls and that’s expected when you’re not playing well. I just clawed my way back game by game. I was saying to myself ‘you’re going to get your opportunities so just stay calm.’ I started breaking well and I trusted my instincts under the pressure and just committed to each shot. Every little mistake he made gave me energy because he was getting upset with himself. I just fed off of that.”
Having turned near failure into opportunity and success, the talented Canadian suddenly feels the experience bodes well for his chances this year.
“I feel like I have a new life now. I was facing defeat and then maybe elimination if I lose my next one so that would’ve been a lot of pressure. But I managed to come back and win. So now I can just come out and play without pressure because I had my back against the ropes and I didn’t expect to win that one but I did.”
Morra’s gritty victory was easily the comeback of the day as the 2015 World 9-ball Championship got under way with 36 matches played out over four sessions at the sparkling Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha. Fans used to stunning upsets in the early going in this event got nothing of the sort. What they did get was a quick reminder of the sheer amount of incredible talent from all corners of the globe and that over the next week, we are surely going to be treated to some of the highest level of pool ever seen.

Monday - Friday 7 - 18 September 2015
Photography courtesy of ©Richard Walker - used by Pro9 with express permission Click the image to view the full size photograph (use "back" to return here) Past World 9-ball Champions have all proven they can handle the crushing pressure. As this year's championship begins in Doha on Saturday, it will once again be the key to victory.
On the eve of the 24th running of the WPA World 9-ball Championship, the hot discussion of pool fans around the globe is about who among the 128 best players in the world gathered here in Doha will emerge with the sport’s most coveted crown come Friday night September 18.
It is, of course, a near impossible task to settle on one or two or even three players, what with so much amazing talent from over 40 countries doing battle, along with the other key factors inherent in 9-ball like luck, fate and that old intangible, the roll of the balls. But that doesn’t stop the bar room repartee, hotel lobby banter and internet chatter from running rampant.
Will the Netherlands’ Niels Feijen become only the second player to win back to back world titles? Can England’s Darren Appleton win his second World 9-ball? Or will Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann become the first player to win three World 9-ball crowns?
Finland’s Mika Immonen is showing incredible form again. Can the Finn win his second 9-ball championship? Will a player from China finally bring gold back to the world’s most populous country? Perhaps Taiwan’s Ko Pin Yi can snap off the 9-ball after winning the 10-ball title earlier this year. Can the USA’s Shane Van Boening finally lift the one crown that has eluded him? And with so many amazingly talented Filipinos in the field, perhaps it’s time a Pinoy became king after a decade drought.
So while you can’t realistically pick a winner, you can get an idea. In order to get a clearer picture of just who might take the whole enchilada, you have to start with the cold hard facts. While we are sure to see plenty of shocking upsets, unknowns staking their claim, greats of the game crashing out under crushing pressure, we can pretty much assume that, realistically, only 20 to 25 players have a chance of making it to the winners’ circle on Friday.
That may seem like a harsh assessment, but pool can be cruel. For sure probably over 50 players have a chance to make a serious run at the late rounds. But at that point, no matter the conditions of the table, the parity of the talent, there is one key factor in 9-ball that always, always separates the men from the boys in this sport; pressure. While there are many superb players, and a fair amount of great players, not everyone can handle the crushing pressure that is unique to championship pool.

Seville Is Crowned Champion After A Dramatic Shootout AT T9B Money Mania
Total9ball appeared once again at the St Albans Hurricane Room this time for an open Sunday event. Money Mania was the name of the event held on Sunday 6th September and it was the first event of its kind as T9B trialed a new format ready for the 2016 season.
The plan was for 42 players but we had to adjust the format as we didn’t get the full field. Players were divided into 2 groups of 11 players. Each player was guaranteed a minimum of three random 10 rack matches within their groups. The group winners and runners up received a seeded space into the Quarter Finals with the next 4 players from each group playing off against each other in a knockout match to reach the Quarter Finals.

Someone from over here, doing remarkably well, over there!
Some great news from the recent World Artistic Pool Championships - British Pro9'er, Adam (Carnage) Nickels came in at 20th position overall. They were performing on 9 foot diamond tables (not 7 foot as was the case last year) with a harder shot program which omitted some of the easier shots from last year with new harder ones.
Last year, Adam was awarded the Best Sportsmanship Medal - the only medal decided by popular vote among the players themselves. This year, Adam won another medal which this time was a skill medal called "The Rising Star" award. It is awarded to the highest score for any competitor that has competed in 3 or less competitions in the past. Being his second competition he was eligible for this award. He was awarded with the medal, a custom jump cue from Jacoby which looks beautiful and a year's membership to Iplaypool.com a pool website worth $129.

Pool fans you’ve waited long enough. Now, the big event you’ve been longing for, is just about here.
15 months after Holland’s Niels Feijen sank the final 9-ball and stood on top of the pool world, the finest pool players from each and every corner of the globe will once again descend upon the desert capital of Doha, Qatar to contest the sport’s most important and most prestigious prize, the 2015 WPA World 9-ball Championship.
The star-laden event runs from September 7-18th at Doha’s Al Arabi Sports Club.
This will be the sixth straight year that that the tiny Gulf country of Qatar hosts the World 9-ball Championship, and the 24th time, dating back to 1990, that the World Pool Billiards Association(WPA) has held a World 9-ball Championship. Once again 128 players from over 40 countries will clash to see who will be crowned the king of 9-ball pool.
As usual the tournament will be run in two brutally difficult stages. Stage 1,which runs from September 7-10, is the qualifying stage where 128 players will try to fill nearly one dozen open slots. The qualifiers, which are perhaps the toughest qualifiers in the world of pool, are already filled up with players from around the world, but with heavy emphasis on Middle Eastern players, Filipinos, Taiwanese, Japanese, and several Europeans.

Growing more and more popular every single year, PRO9 is the best placed vehicle for the promotion of your pool club, billiards brand, associated products, services and opportunities in the truly massive pan-European billiard market.
