The Baltic Pool League 2014 drew to a conclusion this weekend in Riga, Latvia. Once again the kind host was Bams Pool House with 12 brand new Dino Sport Pro tables with very tight pockets and Strachan cloth. It was only 32 best ranked men and 16 best ranked women and oldboys athletes allowed to participate in the final. In the game of 10-ball the hot favourite Estonian Denis Grabe did not let his fans down in men's division and in women's and oldboy's division the final was all about local hero Ojars Blezurs.
Denis Grabe back at the top
This years men's division final was suprisingly dominated by Estonians as three of the four top spots were taken by them. After last years third place finish Denis Grabe surely wanted to regain the title of the best pool player in the Baltics and he did that with style.

Daryl Peach - Winner of the 2014 British Grand Prix Click the image to view the larger photograph - use "back" to return here. DAZZLER DETHRONES MAHARAJA FOR MAIN EVENT TITLE
The 2014 British Grand Prix came down to two of the country’s leading professionals battling it out for the spoils – 2007 World Champion Daryl Peach coming up against defending Southern Masters champion Imran Majid, looking for back to back GB9 main event titles.
Peach began his journey to the final in resounding fashion, sweeping aside Hungary’s Zoltan Kojzsa 9 rack to 1 to take him into the second round of the winners bracket. A much sterner test awaited him here, with leading Spaniard Juan Carlos Exposito taking Peach all the way before succumbing to defeat on the hill. 9-8 saw Peach through to the winners qualifying round where he was to face. In the battle of master and apprentice, it was the apprentice who won through – Burford defeating Peach 9-7 secured his safe passage to the last 16 and put Peach one defeat from elimination. Peach was determined to get to the last 16, but the challenge of Nick Hayes proved a stern one. Peach saw himself home, however, and a 7-5 win was enough to put him back in the hat for the single elimination stage. This saw him draw none other than Phil Burford once again, and revenge was a sweet dish for Peach for it was he who reigned supreme when it mattered. He turned Burford over 9 racks to 5 and lined up a quarter final against fellow Blackpudlian Karl Boyes. A fine match was guaranteed and it was Peach who came out the better, winning 9-7 and putting him into a semi-final against defending Midlands Classic champion Chris Hall. With both looking for their second main event win of the season, they were sure to put on a good show. it was Peach who reigned supreme, however, and he sealed a 9-7 win to put him into the final.

Saturday 22 November 2014
Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. Tommy 'The Disher' Donlon is T9B Undisputed Champion 2014
So after weeks of build up the date finally arrived for Total9ball Undisputed 'Judgement Day' T9B promised an event with the best amateur players in the country all involved, we promised there would be excellent prize money and a buzz in the venue and I strongly believe we delivered on all our promises.
Saturday 22 November was the date and The Hurricane Room in High Wycombe was the venue. Eight beautiful newly re-clothed tables were used and enjoyed by the players competing. This event was unique to Total9ball as we took it back to a simple old school format of straight knock-out. We increased the races to 15 racks to offer value to the participants, each match was winner breaks and the full ten ball call shot rules were applied. Call shot and call safe made this event very interesting as it meant a lucky shot was extremely rare. If a player called a pot and missed it, the opponent had the option to shoot the next shot or pass it back, this meant as many players found out, missing a pot and hooking your opponent actually meant you had hooked yourself.
25 players started the event hoping to take down the magnificent first prize of £850... Pretty good for a one day event with little expenses other than your transport to the venue. The total pot for the event was £2600. What is also exciting for the future is, this format could cope with 64 players and perhaps more if the races were slightly shortened and with those numbers we could be looking at between £2000 and £2500 to the winner, while still paying out profitable prize money to other players on the day.
So the eagerly awaited draw took place just after 10am and was completed by a member of staff from the beautiful Hurricane Room club. As there were 25 players in the draw 7 byes were added meaning a handful of lucky players were just one match win away from £150 in prize money.
Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

The Final Shane Van Boening (USA) 8-2 Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GREECE)
The Semi Finals Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GREECE) 8-3 Karol Skowerski (POLAND) Shane Van Boening (USA) 8-5 Chris Melling (ENGLAND)
‘WANT PAIN? PLAY SHANE’ say the tee shirts and so it proved as Shane Van Boening torched his way through the field to become only the second American player to win the PartyPoker World Pool Masters as he looked in total control to beat Nick Ekonomopoulos 8-2 at the Portland Centre, Nottingham.
Van Boening’s victory silenced any doubters who felt he couldn’t do the business outside of the USA and sent out a warning shot ahead of the Mosconi Cup which gets underway in two weeks time.
Wins over Australia’s James Georgiadis and then England’s Mark Gray took him through to the semis where he disposed of Chris Melling to set up the championship showdown.
“It is an honour to win the World Pool Masters, this is one of the greatest days in my career,” said an emotional Van Boening after he took a standing ovation from the crowd.
“It means a lot to me to win this tournament. I have been playing well over the last six months. Whenever I had a shot I took it down, I only made a couple of mistakes in the last couple of matches.
“I know Nikos, I think I might be in his head a little bit because I have been playing him all year and he hasn’t beaten me yet.
“I have been trying to win overseas and I have got to the finals of a couple of tournaments, and won the World Cup of Pool in 2008. It has been a battle for the last few years so I am really happy to win today.

Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. Lunn and Hall Show Their Class at T9B Annual Scotch Doubles 2014 Saturday 15th November was the date chosen for the annual T9B Scotch Doubles Championships 2014. The venue for this year’s event was the fantastic St Albans Hurricane Room and they sure looked after us by re-clothing all of the tables in the venue just two days before this brilliant event.
Many teams stuck with their partners from last year, Phil Wildman - Mark Parker (Team T9B), Courtney Symons - Tom Staveley (Don The Smeucci) and the reigning champions Craig Osborne and Phil Morgan (Team Shotgun).
Scotch doubles is normally a very hard event to organise as the date selected has to be perfect for lots of players to get enough teams involved to make it worthwhile, T9B put in the hours to make sure there was enough awareness of the event and an impressive 14 teams arrived to do battle.
To maximise value for the players T9B used their 2x double chance system for this event. This meant each team was guaranteed two tense knockout matches and also opened up the jackpot for a team that remained undefeated throughout the event.
T9B handicapped the event to give each team a chance of winning the event and although there was no scotch form to go on… I think we pretty much hit the nail on the head as lots of matches were close in their score lines or players from the losing teams afterwards said… We had chances we felt it was a level game.
Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

Quarter Finals Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GREECE) 8-3 Alex Pagulayan (CANADA) Chris Melling (ENGLAND) 8-6 Karl Boyes (ENGLAND) Shane Van Boening (USA) 8-4 Mark Gray (ENGLAND)
WE’RE DOWN to the last four at the 2014 PartyPoker World Pool Masters as Nick Ekonomopoulos, Chris Melling and Shane Van Boening all enjoyed victories in their quarter-final matches at the Portland Centre, Nottingham. That leaves one Greek, one Pole, one American and one Englishmen to contest pool’s most prestigious invitational tournament as it concludes on Sunday evening.
Nikos Ekonomopoulos put paid Alex Pagulayan’s hopes with a solid performance in the first match of the afternoon. It was a bit of a scratch-fest as both players lost control of the white but the Greek player was solid throughout as he cruised to victory.
“At the start of the match I was a little bit unlucky, I scratched twice on the brake but after that I played near perfect and didn’t miss any balls.
“I am playing well at the moment. I came third in the US Open, I had a second on the Euro Tour and in two weeks it is the Mosconi Cup, which I am very excited for.”

Quarter Finals Karol Skowerski (POLAND) 8-3 Daniele Corrieri (ITALY) 8
THERE WAS double delight in Nottingham for England’s Mosconi Cup contingent as Karl Boyes and then Mark Gray won through their first round matches at the 2014 PartyPoker World Pool Masters at the Portland Centre. They now complete the quarter-final line up, the first match of which was won by Karol Skowerski who is through to the last four on Sunday evening.
Boyes made light work of Qatari hopeful Waleed Majid, winning 8-1 in just 45 minutes as he put on a break and run clinic to leave his opponent rooted in his chair. He can now look forward to a last eight match up against compatriot Chris Melling.
Boyes said, “It is nice to win a match like that, especially in the first round. I broke off in the first rack and tried a cut break but nothing went in.
“I changed to go head on and immediately made a ball so I kept breaking head on. In the middle of the match I think I ran two or three racks just breaking head on.

Karol Skowerski (POL) 8-5 Wang Can (CHN) Chris Melling (ENG) 8-6 Dennis Orcollo (PHI) Shane Van Boening 8-6 James Georgiadis (AUS)
US NO.1 SHANE VAN BOENING survived a nerve-jangling half an hour at the hands of young Aussie James Georgiadis as he edged his way through to the last eight of the 2014 PartyPoker World Pool Masters at the Portland Centre, Nottingham, England.
Van Boening, who returns to the UK in two weeks for his eighth Mosconi Cup appearance, looked to be in the driving seat as he free-wheeled through the racks in the winner breaks format to reach the hill at 7-1.
However, facing a seemingly impossible situation, Georgiadis loosened up and began to claw the racks back with some excellent shot-making and tight safety play. Van Boening, by contrast, looked uncomfortable as he started to miss balls. In the end though, Georgiadis was up against it in the 14th game and a speculative bank on the 3ball left the table open for Van Boening to clinch the victory.
Van Boening said, “I got the momentum going at the beginning but he came back to 7-6 and at that point I had to think about when I have been playing well, like when I won the US Open. I tried to envision that place, because you want to think about something positive and not anything else. You have to try not to worry about your opponent.
“The first match is always tough but you cannot worry who you play. I have a feel of the conditions now and I am feeling good, so I can take confidence to the next round.”

Daniele Corrieri (ITA) 8-4 Niels Feijen (HOL) Nick Ekonomopoulos (GRE) 8-4 Thorsten Hohmann (GER) Alex Pagulayan (CAN) 8-6 Darren Appleton (ENG)
THERE WERE first round defeats for 2014 European Mosconi Cup team mates Niels Feijen and Darren Appleton at the 2014 PartyPoker World Pool Masters while fellow team member Nikos Ekonomopoulos recorded a fine win over Thorsten Hohmann at the Portland Centre, Nottingham, England.
Niels Feijen crashed out as the 21st annual invitational event got underway as the Dutchman was beaten 8-4 by Italian danger man Daniele Corrieri.
The break conditions employed at the Masters saw the three point rule scrapped and no balls tapped into place. That meant the players needed to hit the pack hard in order to give themselves every chance. The European No.8 from Rome looked focused throughout while World Champion Feijen made too many errors when it looked like momentum was shifting in his favour.
Corrieri said, “It was a tense match and it was one of the toughest draws I could have had to play the defending champion and it gives me a lot of confidence going forward.
“Perhaps Niels didn’t quite get the hang of the break and I was able to make balls on the break, and when it is a short race with winner breaks you can take advantage of your chances.”
