| ROUND OF 32 BEGINS IN A WILD RIDE |
2014 WPA Women’s World 9-Ball Championship Guilin Stadium & Dream City The Olympic City of Guilin Guilin China www.my147.com www.top147.com - live score www.alison-chang.com www.wpa-pool.com - Twitter - Facebook

Click the image to view the full size photograph - use "back" to return here All photography courtesy of ©Jin / www.my147.com and used with permission With the knockout stages underway at the Women's World 9-ball Championship in Guilin, China, the pressure is already proving too much to bear for some players.
If you like your pool to resemble a roller coaster ride with plenty of hair raising twists and turns, then the next two days here at the Women’s World 9-ball Championship in Guilin in southern China will surely be everything you could have ever wanted.
This prediction is based on the drama that transpired today inside the Guilin gym, where Judgement Day jitters affected not only the wannabes, but even the sport’s biggest stars. Even straight in 9-balls normally made a thousand out of thousand times in practice were bobbling in the jaws under the intense pressure.
The first order of play today was to trim the field down to 32 where the players would switch to a single elimination knockout, race to 9. (If anyone had any doubts that Asia is the dominant region in pool, they were erased when eyeing who made it through to the Final 32: all but 5 players were from Asia.)
After the draw and a break for dinner, the first 8 matches in the last 32 commenced. As could be expected things didn’t get any easier as the surprises and missteps continued like a domino effect throughout the arena.
Korea’s Ga Young Kim, certainly one of the top five favorites to win here this week, escaped out of her group with narrow 7-6 win over former world champion Shin Mei Lu of Taiwan. In the single elimination round of 32, Kim came up against young and talented Chinese player Wang Xiao Tong. The multi-awarded Kim was a clear favorite, but this event is no ordinary tournament. When Kim found herself in her chair down 8-7 in the race to 9, and Wang shooting a very makeable 9-ball for the win, the Korean star must have known it was curtains. Incredibly Wang missed the easy 9-ball as the crowd gasped in horror. Kim won the rack and then won the decider to stumble into the last 16.

With the IPA (International Professional Pool Players Association) season successfully completed for 2014, the next big stage in the Blackball Pool World is the Sheffield Super 7’s, a team tournament held at the Magna Centre in Sheffield but backed up with something for everyone - Masters singles, Ladies singles, Ladies 3 person team, Speed pool, and plenty of flyers, so pool, pool, and more pool all weekend from Friday evening on the 17th October through to the finish on Sunday 19th (or last man standing as I like to call it, though not in the official sense).

12-18 October 2014
Click the image to view the full size photograph - use "back" to return here All photography courtesy of ©Jin and/or ©Alison Chang and used with permission Facing sudden elimination on Day 1, Great Britain's Kelly Fisher shows Austria's Jasmin Ouschan the door and survives to play another day at the Women's World 9-ball Championship.
Kelly Fisher has been around professional pool long enough to know that sometimes in this sport, as in life, you have to go through the devil's playground to get to heaven.
The devil's playground in this case for the 2012 World 9-ball Champion was losing her first round match on day 1 today at the Women’s World 9-ball Championship against hall of famer and pool’s most recognized personality, Jeanette Lee, 7-4. The Brit, who three months ago had open heart surgery to repair a congenital defect, had trouble with the lightning quick speed of the table. The match was even halfway, but Fisher gave away too many shots and the Black Widow waltzed. In the double elimination group stages, Fisher knew her back was suddenly against the wall.
“Now it’s cutthroat time,” she said while waiting for her next match which could see her go an embarrassing two-and-out. “There’s no second chances.”
If having to tangle with the likes of Lee wasn't enough, Fisher then had to step into the ring in a do or die match with none other than Austria’s Jasmin Ouschan, who had just lost a cliff hanger to Japan’s Chichiro Kawahara, 7-6. If you’re getting the idea that this is the proverbial “Group of Death,” you’re absolutely correct. All four of these players are capable of taking the world title.

Saturday/Sunday 27/28 September 2014
Dinsmore does the double and takes the race for the no.1 spot to the last event
Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley was the venue for the 4th BWPPA event of the season on 27/28 September 2014.
Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore won his 2nd tour event in a row beating Aslam Abubaker in the final.
Dinsmore went into the event as one of 4 players still in realistic contention for the no.1 spot at the end of the season which not only brings with it its own prestige, but also a lovely Ikon cue from our generous friends at Predator.
We had a good turnout as 20 players entered, making it a fantastic season as 28 players have played at least 1 event so far this season. We welcomed new player Rob Hall to his first event on the tour.
Dinsmore got his campaign off to a good start with a 7-3 win over Craig Welsh, and then had a battle royal with old foe Roy Kimberley and just beat him 7-5.

Total9Ball Rookie - Search For A Star The St Albans Hurricane Room Unit 8 Verulam Industrial Estate 224 London Road St Albans Hertfordshire AL1 1JF www.hurricaneroom.co.uk www.total9ball.com - entrants and chat
Saturday 11 October 2014
Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. Aslam's on fire as he takes down T9B Search For A Star Event
Saturday 11th October was the date for the 4th annual T9B Rookie event ‘Search For A Star’. As always this is a very popular event, all players above -1 on the T9B handicap system are given the weekend off while the -1’s, 0 and all the plus players battle it out for the beautiful glass trophy, prize money and the award of a Total9ball sponsorship deal. So this event I wasn’t allowed to enter, however it's always such an exciting event with so many shock results, it’s a pleasure to have a day talking with the players, getting feedback and watching some of the high class action on show.
33 players arrived at the Rookie event on Saturday morning all genuinely believing this was the perfect opportunity for them to strike gold. There were many discussions about who the winner could be, obviously there were as always a few favourites but how would those players perform knowing the opportunity in front of them. Brian Cassidy had a hunch that it would be a 0 or a plus player that would eventually win the event would he be correct?
This event was put together solely on value for money for the players therefore the event began with league stages. Total9ball has never liked using group stages as when it comes to the final matches it’s easy for the players to work out what result is needed from their last match to get through. The league stages tests all players with three random matches and places all results across the whole field into one league table with the top 16 advancing to the knockout stages.
Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

Neil Raybone - 2014 IPA British Open Champion Click the image to view the full size photograph. All photography courtesy of ©Sean Trivass IPA Press Release
As the tables were taken apart after the British Open, Amateur, and Professional Tournaments last weekend the realisation dawned that with the exception of the Super 7’s from Sheffield next weekend (17-19th October), that was it for the IPA season, with the next few months allocated to organising the World Championships for February 2015 - it never really stops you know.
Just like any other sport, we like to see our tournaments unfold in spectacular fashion but even I would never have dared to write a script that matched reality, for fear of it being rejected as just too unrealistic, it really did have absolutely everything. Eighteen pool tables, 150 or so original entrants, HD quality livestreaming, and a double elimination format saw the Open get underway on Friday afternoon immediately taking the numbers down to the last 64 when the real fun began in pursuit of the trophy, cash prize, and pride of place in the blackball pool community. With both amateurs and professionals in action shocks were almost a certainty as the likes of Mark Chung, Christophe Lambert, Simon Ward, and Harry Irwin all went out at the last 32 stage leaving Gareth Hibbott as a pretty hot favourite in my book, having won almost everything so far all season, including the entertaining “Last Man Standing” on the Friday night (see IPA YouTube channel, and well worth a watch). Naturally, that view was the dreaded kiss of death as he crashed out 7-1 in the next round to Neil Raybone and all of a sudden we all realised this was far more open than many had thought. Looking at the big names left in, Neil Raybone and Dan Davy caught the eye but Dan lost out to Andrew Hughes leaving Neil as the only remaining pro left in the semi finals as he played Andrew Hughes while Luke Sanges took on Shane Lewes to set up a final where frankly anything was possible. Despite three of the four lining up at this stage merely proving my point that there is less gap than some imagine between the top amateurs and the professionals, the final between Neil and Shane turned in to a rather one sided affair with Neil Raybone staying perhaps the calmest to run out an 8-0 winner though that is not a totally true reflection of their abilities, with run of the ball and a touch of nerves also playing their part.

Last year's tournament was one of the most thrilling US Open's in recent history, with plenty of action to keep European pool fans glued to their screens into the small hours, with no less than 7 European players making it to the top sixteen on the prize money list, but this was to be the USA's day, as pool supremo Shane Van Boening took the title without loss.
Van Boening's victory in the final over Lee Van Corteza rarely looked in doubt, despite a last minute valiant run of four racks by the Filipino making the scoreline a bit more respectable (13-10), whilst Shane's previous matches had all seen a larger disparity in scores. The hot seat match with Scotland's Jayson Shaw ended 11-5, and the previous match with England's Chris Melling 11-6.
This is the third time Shane has won the US Open, and with his two most recent wins, (2012-2013) he has completed a triplet of champions who have now won the title consecutively in recent years, joining Mika Immonen (2008-2009), and Darren Appleton (2010-2011).
Have no doubt that Shane Van Boening wants the title again this year, and have no fear that Europe's finest will be doing everything they can to wrest the coveted trophy off him.

Monday-Thursday 1-4 December 2014
Gray: ‘It’s one of my biggest achievements.’
ENGLAND’S MARK GRAY gets a chance to win his second PartyPoker Mosconi Cup as he took the first of the automatic qualifying spots at the weekend. Gray, 41, completed a superb run at the Dutch Open in Leende, beating Nick Ekonomopoulos in the final to top the five event Euro Tour series.
Gray, who was on the winning side in Malta in 2008, lost early in the event to Karl Boyes and had to battle his way through the losers side of the bracket to reach the straight knock-out last 32.
“It’s amazing really that it goes all the way to the final to decide who gets the spot!” he said.
“I'm over the moon to be playing in the Mosconi again as it's only my second time on the team. Playing in 2008 in Malta was a great experience but I'm sure playing in Blackpool will be an even greater experience.
