Dutch and Finns through to last four

Quarter Finals
Finland
9-3 England B
Holland 9-8 Japan

HOLLAND AND FINLAND both made their way through to Sunday’s semi-finals of the 2013 888.com World Cup of Pool with wins over England B and Japan respectively and they will now face each other in the first semi-final on Sunday afternoon.

The Dutch had to grind it out against Japan in a hill-hill thriller with both teams struggling at times, while the Finnish pair of Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen looked in good shape against England B as their title defence continues.

In the second match of the session, Japan and Holland both teams shared the opening racks as they tried not to give anything away with so much at stake. The Dutch pair of Nick Van den Berg and Niels Feijen could not get away from their high-spirited opponents - Lo Li-wen and Naoyuki Oi – and after six racks it was all square at 3-3.

Down to the last eight in London

Round 2
Japan
7-6 USA
Holland 7-5 India
England A 7-5 Italy

WITH TWO days play left at the 888.com World Cup of Pool, the tournament is down to the last eight teams as Japan, Holland and England A all recorded second round wins at the York Hall in London.

With England B already through to the weekend’s quarter finals, the A team followed them in as they came from behind to beat the plucky Italian pairing of Bruno Muratore and Fabio Petroni.

The Italians enjoyed some good fortune and before long they were 4-1 to the good as the

English team of Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton sank deeper into their chairs. England took the next, but the Italians though were in stroke and they took the next to move to 5-2 and put the English under extreme pressure.

A blistering break from Muratore left them with no reward as the 1 ball was covered by the 2 and they elected to push out. England put them back in and Petroni missed with a snatched attempt at the pot on the 1 ball.

Appleton and Boyes dished up and when Boyes split the pack and left a shot on the 1 ball in the next it was enough for them to run the table and get within one of the Italians at 4-5. After some exchanges in the next, Petroni jumped the cue ball off the table gifting ball in hand to the English who accepted gratefully.

It was the turning point in the game as England broke and ran the next to reach the hill at 6-5. Boyes played a super-tight safety in what was the final rack and although the Italians escaped well, Appleton was able to pocket the 1 ball and they were on their way to victory.

“Sometimes in pool it just doesn’t go your way at the start of the match. They had a couple of nice rolls but that is pool and you have to be patient and try and fight back,” said Boyes.

“It was unbelievable to win five racks the way the match went. In the first round it went our way but this was reversed and you have to sit and be patient. We have won World Championships, US Open, Mosconi Cups, so we know how to win from behind.”

Appleton added, “I don’t think anyone else in this tournament could have won that from 5-2 down. They were getting all the luck in the world but I said to Karl we haven’t had an opportunity.

“The way we played from 5-2 was unbelievable. We made some great finishes and played some great shots. It has been a great night’s pool for everybody. They didn’t do anything wrong from 5-2 but the roll of the ball turned and we had some opportunities.

“There was a the devils playground of a lot of pressure and this is why I want to play with Karl because when pressure is on I know he will make the shot.”

Big guns make their move

Round 2
Hungary
7-4 Russia
Philippines 7-3 Singapore
Chinese Taipei 7-1 Greece

UNFANCIED QUALIFIERS Hungary continued where they left off against China on Wednesday as they once again made light work of more exalted opposition as they put paid to Russian hopes at the 888.com World Cup of Pool by a 7-4 score line.

There were also wins at the York Hall for Chinese Taipei and Philippines as the big guns made their move into the quarter-finals.

Balazs Mikos and Gabor Solymosi looked to be enjoying every minute of it and played in the sort of relaxed manner that can count for a lot in a high pressure event like the World Cup.

Double white-wash for Teams England!

Round 1
England
A 7-0 Indonesia

Round 2
Finland
7-6 Korea
England B 7-0 Germany

THERE WAS double joy for the two English teams at the 888.com World Cup of Pool as first England A routed Indonesia 7-0 to reach the second round, and then the B team smashed Germany by a similar score line to reach the quarter-finals.

Both teams looked in outstanding shape and with them both being in different halves of the draw the possibilities of an all-England final on Sunday night are not out of the question.

England A, comprised of former World Champions Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes, looked very much the part as they completed the first round matches with a thumping 7-0 win over Indonesia at the York Hall to set up a second round game against Italy.

Looking focused throughout, England never let the Indonesian pairing of Ricky Yang and Irsal Nasution off the hook as they put on the best performance of the tournament to date.

Appleton was certainly pleased with how it went; “We are best friends and we have been for a long time, so we feel really comfortable together. We always play really well together. “We had the advantage of watching all the other matches so we got to see how the table played and we really enjoyed it.

Chinese Taipei, Greece and Italy win as first round nears end

Chinese Taipei 7-5 Belgium
Greece 7-0 Australia
Italy 7-3 Spain

THERE WAS more first round action in the 888.com World Cup of Pool at the York Hall in London and there were wins for Chinese Taipei, Greece and Italy who all make their way through to the second round.

Italy won the session closer as they got the better of Spain in the Mediterranean clash. The Spanish – David Alcaide and Juan Carlos Exposito - didn’t enjoy the best of luck as they scratched a few times and were confronted by some tricky layouts.

The Italian pair of Bruno Muratore and Fabio Petroni, who has been representing their country since the early days of the competition, looked in very good shape though and will be quietly confident about the weekend. They will play England A or Indonesia in round two.

US, Singapore through as India win thriller

USA 7-5 Kuwait
Singapore 7-5 Poland
India 7-6 Canada

THERE WAS some superb drama at the 888.com World Cup of Pool this evening as India came through a hill-hill thriller against Canada to move through to the next round where they will meet Holland on Friday evening. The York Hall was packed to the rafters with fired-up Indian fans and their team gave them plenty to cheer about in the end.

Smooth Hungary leave China reeling

The 2013 888.com World Cup of Pool received its first major shock today at the York Hall in East London as European qualifiers Hungary dumped two-time World Cup champions China out of the competition with a clinical 7-2 win.

The Hungarian duo of Gabor Solymosi and Mikos Balazs had scrapped their way through a European qualifying event in Croatia last month, but their respective careers to date have been fairly low key.

On the other hand, the Chinese pair of Li Hewen and Liu Haitao, have excellent track records with Li in particular, a twice winner of this event and also a bronze and silver medallist at the World Pool Championship in 2006 and 2012 respectively.

However, pedigree counted for nothing as the Hungarians played flawlessly to move into a 5-0 lead. Despite the Chinese grabbing a couple of racks, to give themselves a slim chance in the winner breaks format, they could do nothing with the break and the Hungarians cruised to the win.

“We were really confident we could beat China,” said a delighted Balazs.

“They are very strong but we practiced a lot and we knew if it came together and we played well that we would win the match.

“We have practiced a lot together to get the feel of playing together; it was practice, practice, practice. We are very happy to get through to the second round and we can win this tournament.

“The tables are great, we have been practicing a lot since we arrived here to get the feel of the table and they are superb to play on.” He added.

In the next round they face Russia, who completed an error-strewn 7-5 win over a Hong Kong team who went to pieces in the closing stages.

England B, Holland and Philippines through

THERE were wins for three of the fancied teams at the 888.com World Cup of Pool as England B, Holland and the Philippines all made their way into the second round as play continued at the York Hall in London.

The Philippines pair of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza closed out the evening beating Croatia – Karlo Dalmatin and Ivica Putnik – 7-4. The Croatians were in with a chance as they stayed with their opponents in the early stages, but a succession of errors saw the team spirit drain away.

With a strong Filipino contingent in the crowd, including the Ambassador, the duo from Manila completed the win.

In the second match, England B – Chris Melling and Daryl Peach – were big favourites against a Portuguese team making their 888.com World Cup of Pool debut and they justified the bookmaker’s faith with a scrappy 7-4 win to book a second round game against Germany.

It wasn’t their greatest showing but if getting into the second round was their goal, they achieved it. They took the early 3-0 lead, but then Melling failed to get out of a snooker and with ball in hand, Portugal reduced the deficit. The Portuguese pair of Manual Gama and Guilherme Sousa started to shed their early nerves and after a poor miss on the brown 7 by Melling they got the score back to 3-4.

They shared the next two racks and at 5-4 down, Portugal had every chance of springing an upset. However, they couldn’t capitalise on it and the English pair held their nerve to get over the line

“Most players only play a table as quick as this in Matchroom events. It is a quality table and I don’t think you can find a table as quick as that,” said Melling.

“Most people at home don’t understand the pressure you are under. At the end of the day as long as you win that is main thing. We will both go back and assess our game because we both made some mistakes but we both made some great shots as well and that is the beauty of pool.”

Peach added, “It is a little bit nerve wracking but it’s nice to get the first match and the first win under your belt.”

First session completes with wins for three favourites

Defending champions Finland – Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen - are through to the second round of the 888.com World Cup of Pool following a comfortable 7-2 win over Austria as the six-day tournament got underway at the York Hall in East London.

They won five racks in a row from 2-1 down to seal victory, after Austria, represented by Jasmine and Albin Ouschan, looked set to go 3-1 ahead. Jasmine, though, miscued pocketing the brown 7 and lost position. Trying to catch up left her with a tough cut on the 9 ball which she left in the jaws of the corner pocket.

After that the tide turned as the confident Finnish duo sprinted for the line.

“It’s always tough in the first match. We were a bit jittery and they had a chance for 3-1 but it was a tough one for Jasmine on the 9 and she jarred it. We got in control, didn’t look back and closed door,” said Mika Immonen.

“We’re happy to get over the first hurdle. It was nerve-wracking but we’re just trying to stay positive for next match.” He added.
