DAY 3 - THE BIG DANCE STARTS TO TAKE SHAPE
2013 WPA World 9-Ball Championships Qatar Billiards & Snooker Federation Al-Arabi Sports Club New Salata Doha Qatar www.alarabi.qa www.olympic.qa www.qbsf.net - stage 2 draw (pdf) - live scoring www.wpa-pool.com - live scoring www.alkass.net/live_plus.aspx

Relief and pure joy were two emotions on wide display on Day 3 of the 2013 World 9-ball Championship, as 32 players booked their spots into Wednesday’s Final 64, the single elimination knockout phase that signals the real start of pool’s most prestigious event.
Relief came from those top players who just wanted to notch their second win and put the madness that can be the group stages behind them. Pure joy came from the other players, those that know that winning this tournament is a massive long shot, and just getting through to the big dance is a career defining moment in itself.
The 128 player field that began here on Saturday was already considered by many to be the strongest ever gathered for this event. As the wannabes wither and the main stage starts to take shape, the remaining field promises to offer a brilliant collection of cue artists from all corners of the globe. It’s the kind of shot in the arm the sport of pool needs.
Today’s play inside the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha was given over to only winners’ side matches. Winners advanced to the Final 64, while losers were sent over to the losers side of their group brackets, where they will play for one more chance tomorrow on Judgement Day.

As the long, slow grind of this week-long World 9-ball championship wound its way through Day 2, perhaps the best way to try and understand where it’s all headed at this point is to listen to the words of defending champion Darren Appleton, after he won his opening match on Day 1.
Said the Brit: “There are probably only 20 players who you can actually say are favorites to win this tournament, 10 more who are knocking on the door of perhaps winning it, and 20 more who can, on any given night, beat any of those top 30 players.”
Add that simple equation together and you’ve got 50 top pros who can wreak massive havoc out on the blue pitch, with 30 who can realistically even consider entering the winner’s circle come September 13th. I don’t know about you. But those look like some extremely impressive numbers that, when added together, can only mean this event is primed for some big time fireworks in the coming days. That’s a guarantee.
This tantalizing fact has become even more evident after four sessions over nine hours today inside the frigid Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha, as Day 2’s storyline followed Day 1 with those massive upsets we all love again non-existent, and all of pool’s top guns notching impressive wins to position themselves for slots in the Final 64. You need two wins to advance out of the group stage into the single elimination knockout round of 64, and it’s looking like most of the 50 players that Appleton referred to will be there when the real action begins.

Fans of the World 9-ball Championship have become accustomed to the fun of shocking first day upsets that send great players scrambling over to the do-or-die losers side and, at the same time, introduce us to new names from far flung nations that we had no idea produced such talented pool players.
Saturday in blazing hot Doha, Qatar was, except for one match right at the end, not one of those days.
96 players out of the 128 in the field vying for 9-ball supremacy saw action today inside the icy cold Al Arabi Sports Club, and by and large the story line for the eight hours of play hardly veered from a predictable script. This is not to suggest that some of pool’s biggest names didn’t taste defeat. Or that we didn’t see some great new talent. But in those matches which featured a clear favourite versus a massive underdog, 99% of the favorites came through with hardly a scratch.
The phrase “the luck of the draw” couldn’t be more apt in this case. The random draw to determine the seedings done at the players meeting on Friday night left some of the top players with clear mismatches, say against a player from Qatar, while other big names were faced with a match that could make a solid quarter-final or even a semi-final.
The latter was the case for the legend Efren Reyes of the Philippines. While the 50 or so Filipino fans who showed up to watch their hero fully expected him to win the race to 9 alternate break match, Reyes’ opponent was, even on paper, very much his current equal. Hsu Kai Lun has been one of Taiwan’s top young guns for several years now. He even reached the finals of the 2011 China Open in Shanghai.

Shane: ‘We can win!’
REIGNING US OPEN champion Shane Van Boening becomes the second member of Team USA as they attempt to regain the coveted PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup when Europe and America meet for the 20th occasion at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from 2nd to 5th December.
It will be the South Dakota Kid’s seventh appearance in the highly anticipated Ryder Cup of pool and he will be looking to improve on his 48% win record and help boost his team to glory. Van Boening is currently sixth on the all-time American list, and given his high-level consistency, it’s a statistic he’s sure to improve upon.
“Of course, it's a tremendous honour to be representing the USA and the sport of pool for seven straight years on the Mosconi Cup team,” he said.
“My family is very proud of me and I can't wait for it all to get underway this December in Vegas...

DARREN APPLETON REFLECTS ON LAST YEARS INCREDIBLE WIN
2013 WPA World 9-Ball Championships Qatar Billiards & Snooker Federation Al-Arabi Sports Club New Salata Doha Qatar www.alarabi.qa www.olympic.qa www.qbsf.net - stage 2 draw (pdf) - live scoring www.wpa-pool.com - live scoring www.alkass.net/live_plus.aspx www.darrenappleton.com
11 - 13 September 2013
'I KEEP PINCHING MYSELF'
READY TO DEFEND HIS WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN DOHA, DARREN APPLETON REFLECTS ON LAST YEAR'S INCREDIBLE WIN, HOW HE DEALS WITH PRESSURE AND HIS METEORIC RISE TO THE TOP OF THE SPORT
I first met Darren Appleton back in 2007 before anyone in the pool world had ever heard of the Brit. I was covering the qualifiers for the 2007 World 9-ball Championship at the Star Billiards Center in Manila, Philippines, writing a daily blog for Matchroom Sport, the promoters of the event. The five day qualifiers for pool’s most prestigious tournament was one of those hard core affairs that simply makes you shake your head in awe. The talent level on hand trying for the slimmest of chances to make it to pool’s biggest stage was amazing. Players had to win seven straight race-to-9 matches to qualify. It was a grind filled with constant pressure.
Amidst the cacophony of billiard balls flying about and drama from tight matches, I started to notice a western player who seemed to have the goods. Day after day Darren Appleton tried his hand at one of the qualifiers, but he kept coming up just short, losing in the finals, or the semi’s by the slimmest of margins. After seven tries he failed to make it to the big show. But it wasn’t just Appleton’s near misses that got my attention—there were lots of players who fit into that category—it was his style of play.
Besides prodigious cueing talent, you could tell that this guy had something extra. He was a battler and fighter of the first order, the kind of guy who looked like he could out-work you with his mind on any given day. Appleton oozed hard core and you just knew that defeat wouldn’t keep him down.
I was so impressed with his style of play that I featured him in my blog despite the fact that he didn’t even win a qualifier. Maybe I’m a good judge of talent. Or maybe Appleton’s ability was simply so obvious.
It turns out “Dynamite,” as he was known, was just then learning the game of American pool. He had dominated the world of English 8-ball for years. Although he never won a world championship in the discipline, he sat atop the rankings for 7 years.

World Seniors Championship - Will Bond Defect To The East?
World Seniors Snooker Championship Mountbatten Centre Alexandra Park Portsmouth Hampshire UK www.worldsnooker.com - tickets
Saturday/Sunday 19-20 October 2012
Will Bond Defect To The East?
Nigel Bond is looking forward to defending the 888casino.com World Seniors Championship title in Portsmouth next month, but has revealed that his snooker career could lead to a permanent move to Russia.
Bond beat Tony Chappel 2-0 in the final last year and will be aiming for back-to-back titles at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth on October 19 and 20. Green baize legends like Stephen Hendry, Steve Davis, Jimmy White, Dennis Taylor and Cliff Thorburn will also competing for the £18,000 top prize at the Sky-televised event.
Bond, age 47 from Derbyshire, is still going strong on the sport’s main tour and is ranked 44th in the world. But the player nicknamed 00-147 admits that he will consider moving base to eastern Europe in years to come.
“I have spent a lot of time in Russia, coaching players,” said Bond. “There is an academy in Moscow now and there is so much enthusiasm for snooker there. At the moment I am still enjoying professional snooker and I’m still competitive, but there could come a time when it makes financial sense for me to go over there and coach full time.
“I have also recently been to Macedonia to play an exhibition. It’s amazing to see these places where you would never think they have even heard of snooker, but so many people there watch the coverage on Eurosport and they love it.

Souquet named as first European player
RALF SOUQUET will break yet another record this December when he dons the blue European shirt to do battle in the 20th annual PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
It will be the German’s 16th time as a member of Team Europe and cements his existing record for the leading number of appearances by a European player in pool’s No.1 event.
And when the tournament gets underway on Monday 2nd December, Souquet will be looking to improve upon two other Mosconi records he currently holds – all-time number of wins (45), and more matches played by any European player (75).
“The Mosconi Cup is by far the best event out there in the world of billiards and there are hardly any words to explain how big and important this tournament is,” said a delighted Souquet.
“I don't know my team mates yet but no matter who will join our team, captain Johan Ruijsink will make us work hard and fight for our lives to keep the Cup in Europe, and win this prestigious event for the 4th time in a row.”

WITH THE 2013 World Cup of Pool set to take place in London from 17-22 September, it’s no surprise that leading UK bookmaking firm William Hill have installed the super-talented Filipino pairing of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza as joint favourites at 8/1 along with the USA.
The deadly duo from Manila, currently world ranked #2 and #3 respectively, are certainly one of the in-form pairs competing for the $60,000 top prize when 32 two-player teams from all over the world convene at the York Hall for the six day event.
Although the Philippines have won this event on two occasions in its seven year history, both times it was the pairing of Pinoy pool legends Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante who claimed the glory.
The nearest Orcollo has come was a runners-up spot in 2010 when he and Roberto Gomez were well beaten by China, while Corteza will be making his second appearance in the competition after partnering Orcollo in Manila in 2012.
Last September, with the weight of expectation on their shoulders, they flopped, going down 8-7 to a giant-killers Switzerland in the first round.
“I am very honoured to be given another chance to represent the Philippines in the World Cup of Pool,” said Corteza.
“To be honest, last year was like a blur and it was over before we knew it. The pressure from our home crowd was a little too much to handle but hopefully this time we can perform better.”

PRO9 has established an outstanding reputation as Europes No.1 source for information on American Pool in the UK and Europe.
Upcoming tournament details, prompt match reporting, exclusive images by talented photographers, superb articles by expert pundits, active pool related forums, player profiles and a very sophisticated membership - basically, an incredible information resource for the American style game in Europe.
Since it launched, PRO9 has become compulsory reading, not just for the UKs pool players, but to hundreds and thousands of pool obsessives from around the world every single day.
PRO9s members range from professional pool players, cue-sports enthusiasts, club managers, tournament organisers, pool fans and aficionados, as well as various "movers and shakers" in the cue-sports field, including entrepreneurs in the wholesale and retail sector, as well as magazine editors and television sports promoters.
