| WPBL Bonus Ball - Week #5 Match-up Preview |
World Professional Billiard League WPBL Arena Las Vegas Nevada USA www.wpbltv.com - official rules - facebook - twitter - youtube - Pro9 chat

The World Professional Billiard League’s fifth week of action will feature four teams from the North Division and three teams from the South Division. All matches are played at the WPBL Arena in Las Vegas, NV. The week’s first match, Thursday June 27th, can be seen live for free at www.wpbltv.com.
Thursday features a re-match of the Chicago Rockets facing off against division rivals the Pittsburgh Poison. The Rockets only winning match this season came last Sunday against the Poison 11-7 based largely off of their individual games. Chicago needs to play strong in order to move up past Pittsburgh in their division. The Poison are 1.4 average match points ahead of the Rockets in the North. Neither team has a player amongst the top ten; while the highest ranked player on either team is Adam Smith, who is in 15th.
Daryl Peach, the 2007 WPA World Nine Ball Champion will see his first action in the WPBL as he substitutes for Poison member Sylver Ochoa. Pittsburgh will play two matches this weekend, then not have another for nearly a month. The Poison have played more matches than any other team this season (7), and will follow Thursday’s match with another against the Miami Cruise on Saturday. The team does not compete again until July 28th.
Friday’s match will showcase the Minnesota Outlaws taking on the Las Vegas Dice. The Outlaws who are tied with the New York Pride for fourth, sit slightly in front of the Dice who are in sixth in the overall standings. Minnesota has won all three matches this season, although are tied for second place with New York in the North Division. The Las Vegas members have recorded a perfect game this season in team play; however, the Outlaws Hohmann is the highest ranked individual player on either team in 10th place with a player rating of 54.0.

Lee Van's the man! Lee Van Corteza that is. Even he was surprised. "I have to beat Orcollo twice," he had questioned earlier? Dennis Orcollo is known for his no nonsense approach at the table. You don't often see him smile, or show any emotion…until he wins.
All the way through the brackets of the Diamond Southern Classic 9-Ball division Dennis had won. So, going into the finals he still had 2 lives, Corteza, only one. He had a loss and, therefore, to win the title, he had to beat Dennis twice.
Orcollo is regarded by some to be the toughest out there right now. Whether it's tournament tough or, for cold hard cash, he is a hard man to beat - especially, twice.
Lee Van had played extremely well all event long and was getting stronger. He'd just put a 7 pack on young Phil Burford in the semis. In a race to 9, that's hard for Phil to fade. He had sat in the "electric chair" as Accu-Stats' commentator Danny DiLiberto likes to call it. Nothing you can do from there but watch. And wait. And, if the opportunity comes, you'd better be ready.
Phil was. In the 8th rack, Corteza rattled a 2-Ball. It sat in the jaws of the pocket. Phil pried himself out of his seat, potted it, and calmly ran the rest of the rack. He made the 1 on the break but got no shot on the 2. He attempted a jump shot and, that was all she wrote. Van ran out, 9-1.
The rub was, Burford had just beaten another Filipino who'll match up with anyone; Carlo Biado. Carlo, earlier in the event, had harnessed a spectacular 7 pack…and out. His opponent, Nikos Economopoulos, got only one game.
Phil showed that heart as he reversed a 1-5 deficit to steal the set from Biado 9-8. Biado got fourth.
Phil settled for third. Add that to his 3rd in the 10-Ball and, all-in-all, he had fared pretty well in the deep South. His sponsor, OB Cues would be happy.

All of the World Professional Billiard League’s North Division teams competed this weekend at the WPBL Arena in Las Vegas. In the end, the Toronto Blue Sharks emerged atop the division, while the Philadelphia Aces fell from first to fourth place.
Much of the focus on week 4 of the WPBL was on the first appearance for Thorsten Hohmann since his incredible 60 point shoot-out run June 1st, and he did not disappoint. His Outlaws opened the weekend with a 9-4 win over Toronto Friday night, with Hohmann's singles defeat of John Morra helping put the Blue Sharks away.

2012 Reigning Champions - Team Finland - Mika Immonen & Petri Makkonen. All photography courtesy of ©Carina Altomonte / Matchroom Sport Event set for London debut
AFTER FOUR years in Manila and two in Rotterdam, the eighth annual World Cup of Pool will be making a welcome return to UK shores when it takes place at the historic York Hall, Bethnal Green in London from 17th to 22nd September.
Following on from last year’s victory in the Philippines, the Finnish pair of Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen will back to defend their title at a venue that has gained a place in pool folklore following a 16 year association with the Mosconi Cup.
With 32 two-player teams representing 31 countries chasing the lion’s share of the $250,000 prize fund, there will be plenty of teams in with a shout. That will include two from the home country who will sure to be well supported in the East London pocket billiards mecca.
The event will be played to a single elimination format over six days with two sessions a day. In addition to the home nation and defending champions, all of the strongest countries in world pool will be sending teams and that includes the Philippines, Holland, Germany, China, the USA and Taiwan.
Promoters Matchroom Sport will be building the exact same arena as that used at the Mosconi Cup and will be looking to generate a similar atmosphere as the tournament progresses.
Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn said, “After six years on the road, we thought the time was right to bring the World Cup back to the UK and with its Mosconi Cup connotations, the York Hall seemed the perfect choice for a venue.

All photography courtesy of ©Mike Brown/WPBL. THE WPBL ADDS NEW FEATURES TO BROADCAST
The World Professional Billiard League located in Las Vegas, NV is now in the fourth week of its inaugural season. Each week, the WPBL looks to add new features enhancing the overall experience for both fans and players alike.
In recent matches fans may have noticed the inclusion of three more cameras and the use of a new lighting sequence.
Incorporated in these additions, was the “pocket cam” which not only gives a unique view of the process of pocketing or missing a ball, but ultimately making enthusiasts feel like they are part of the action.
The WPBL’s live broadcast is now running with one of the world’s most universally supported streams available on the internet. The stream has been tested and is fully capable of supporting the increasing amount of traffic to the www.wpbltv.com website. A preview of this weekend’s match-ups will see all six teams in the North Division competing against each other. There will be no matches on Thursday June 20th as a result, the first match of the week will be Friday June 21st at 6:00pm PT. Friday’s match will feature the Toronto Blue Sharks who are currently in 4th place overall versus the Minnesota Outlaws who are close behind in 5th. Players to watch include: Thorsten Hohmann, captain of the Outlaws who is coming off of his 60 point run, while the Blue Sharks Morra currently sits in 3rd place in the individual player standings.

Mika Immonen (Finland) - 2013 Ultimate 10-Ball Champion All photography courtesy of ©JP Parmentier. Kim and Immonen Take the Titles at the Ultimate 10-Ball Championships
Our two finalists came from opposite ends of the winners bracket to meet in the hot seat match and the loser came back for a rematch in the finals. Our cast for this drama included Mika Immonen who went through the winners round unscathed and Wang Can who was doing the same until he ran into Immonen in that penultimate winners side challenge. But Wang did not leave that match with a heavy heart. He kept it close throughout and only lost 10-8. He then vanquished Darren Appleton 10-7 to win his rematch. Wang Can had never held a major title before but everyone knew it would not be long before the young man from China stood on this type of doorstep.
Can had done some serious damage on his way to the finals. He steamrolled Raj Hundal 10-4 and then gave similar treatment to Jayson Shaw of the UK 10-6. He took out young sharpshooter Justin Bergman 10-4 and then treated none other than Shane Van Boening like an unwanted stepchild by embarrassing him 10-2. His next victim was Alex Pagulayan and Pagulayan wilted 10-4 under the heat. It was then he met his first loss from Immonen.
Immonen had been in form all week long. He bested Ernesto Dominguez (10-2) and then put away Nikos Ekonomopoulos (10-6) and Mike Dechaine (10-4). Next to face the chill of the ice was Darren Appleton. Appleton had been having a fine run of his own but Mika just proved too strong and beat him 10-7. It was in the next round that he sent Wang Can left and took his chair to wait for the finals.
Mika drew first blood there. But this final was a race to 12 and Can was determined not to let Immonen get too much momentum. Can took the second rack to tie us early. A true contrast of style, Can plays with a quick pace while the Iceman is much more deliberate and thoughtful. Youth against experience. Experience took the next rack but youth fought back to tie us once again.

| EVENT REPORT: 2013 GB9 NORTHERN MASTERS |
THE 2013 GB9 NORTHERN MASTERS Cedar Court Leeds / Bradford Mayo Avenue, Rooley Lane Bradford BD5 8HW United Kingdom www.gb9balltour.com www.cedarcourthotels.co.uk
Friday/Saturday/Sunday 7-9 June 2013
Karl Boyes - 2013 GB9 Northern Masters Champion GUAPO SORTS THE BOYES FROM THE MEN
This year’s Northern Masters has reached its conclusion on the GB 9 Ball Tour, with Karl Boyes and Michael Rhodes taking home the major silverware from the tour’s annual 10-ball event.
This was the first event in four years to take place in Yorkshire – somewhat of a heartland for American Pool in the UK. Many of the county’s players were there to try their shot at the title. However, many of the country and indeed continent’s finest players were also there battling it out to take the title home with them and an electric tournament resulted in a quite thrilling final in Bradford.
The Northern Masters final for 2013 was contested between two of the most seasoned players in the UK right now. Karl Boyes, finally hitting somewhat of a purple patch in the domestic season, and Mark Gray who was looking to cement his place at the top of the provisional British rankings in readiness for the end of season World Pool Masters qualifiers.
Boyes started his campaign started his campaign in the tournament with a comfortable 9 racks to 2 victory against Brett Armer, following this up with a 9-5 victory over Jez Graham to put him safely into the last 32 stage. An international flavour came up in the next match as Bruno Muratore tried to stop Boyes in his tracks. It was Boyes who made it though, however, as he overcame the efforts of the pony-tailed Italian in a tense 9-8 win. This saw him through to a match against Sunderland’s Adam Benn Smith in the last 16, a match which he came through 9 racks to 4 and safely putting him into the last 8. There he faced an almighty fright from Benji Buckley before again coming through another hill-hill encounter, eliminating the Sheffield shooter 9-8 and putting him into the final four. Waiting for him there was Chris Hall of Wakefield, and he made sure of back to back victories over Yorkshiremen with a gritty 9-5 win, seeing him into his first main event final since July 2010.
