Ana Mazhirina (RUS)

Tough victory over favoured Ouschan in the final

With a strong performance, Ana Mazhirina (RUS) conquered the crown of the Ballazzo Women's Euro-Tour in St. Johann/Pg. in Austria over local star Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) with 7:4.

Mazhirina already played a very good semi-final match with Ina Kaplan (GER) where she clearly remained the upper hand with 7:3. Ouschan had more problems with Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) but after she was trailing 1:4, she was able to turn the match and win it in the end with 7:4. The final match started very much alike. Mazhirina had some better rolls including a 9-ballbreak which brought her a 3:0 lead over local hero Ouschan. But then the tide seemed to turn and Ouschan got into "winner-mode". She took the next four racks and lead 4:3 in the match. In the 8th rack, Mazhirina forced Ouschan to commit a foul and she leveled the match at 4:4. Ouschan broke the next rack and unfortunately scratched. Mazhirina showed no mercy and finished the rack, taking again a 5:4 lead over Ouschan. The story of the semi-final would not be repeated in the final, that was clear now. Rack number ten saw a break and run from Mazhirina which was a demonstration of her class. Being the underdog in the match with Ouschan, she managed to get back in the game and even went on the hill with 6:4, putting a huge amount of pressure on Ouschan. The Austrian had no got lay after the break and decided to play a safety shot which turned out to be not good enough. Mazhirina could see the ball on and finished the rack, winning the match with 7:4 and the title of the Ballazzo Women's Euro Tour in Austria 2013.

Courtney too good for the field at T9B

Courtney Symons again showed his class at Event 4 of the T9B Amateur Series. Symons, now a 5 times T9B tournament winner, battled through the field yesterday at the Hurricane Room in St Albans to move himself up to 5th in the five event Amateur Series. Symons playing off a handicap of -3 will now be cut and join Luke Rollison on -4 for the remainder for the season. Before this event Courtney was in need of ranking points after he missed event three but now looks to have confirmed his place in the Amateur Series Grand Finals held at St Albans on the 27th July 2013.

Symons event began with a match against Phil Wildman, Courtney was never behind winning 7v3, the match however wasn’t the best with both players making a few uncharacteristic mistakes. Symons followed this result with wins against Dean Reeve (7v1) Lionel Brown (7v4) and Geoff Windeatt (7v5). Courtney's chances of scooping the Jackpot were crushed in the next match by the smallest of margins as new player to T9B Liam Monk defeated Symons 7v6. So this meant Courtney at this event only took one place in the Quarter Finals. Courtney made the most of this one chance though beating Lionel Brown 7v3 to confirm his place in the Semi Finals.

Tom Staveley, fresh from his first T9B event win in High Wycombe last weekend would have been hoping for more of the same, but it wasn't to be, as Staveley lost his first two matches 7v6 against Terry Arnold and Liam Monk. Liam as mentioned earlier is a new player to T9B, he has just returned from a trip to America playing cuesports experiencing some good success and results against some big name players. Liam's day began with a good 7v3 win against Sunny Garib, he followed this with the two hill-hill wins over Staveley and Symons but then ran into two in form players... Last season's Amateur Series Grand Final winner Jonathan Vaughan and Aslam Abubaker who reached the Final of the BWPPA last weekend in Barnsley, Liam was defeated in both matches by scoreline 7v5 and 7v2 respectively.

It was great to have Robin Cripps with us all the way from Penzance, Cornwall but it wasn’t to be Robin's day as he didn't seem to get going, losing matches to Jonathan Vaughan (7v3) and Dean Reeve (7v5).

Roy regains the No. 1 spot in the rankings

Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley was the venue for the 2nd BWPPA event of the season on 18/19 May 2013.

Roy “The Sandman” Kimberley regained the top spot on the tour from Tony Southern, as he wins his third event out of four on the BWPPA tour. Kimberley went into the event knowing that only a higher finish than Southern could get him back to the no 1 spot.

This was the biggest field in a number of years as 17 players entered, with Alexander Prokopiev again making the 7,000 mile trip from Yakutsk, Sakha, Russia, (just north of Japan), and Poland’s Leszek Blumczynski also entering, although he now lives in the UK.

It could have been an even better turn out as several tour regulars such as Matt Duffy, Shaun Madin and Danny Luton were absent.

Niels Feijen (NED)

"The Terminator" leaves no chance to Kazakis

With a very powerful and impressive performance, Niels Feijen (NED) won the final match of the Austrian Open against Alexander Kazakis (GRE) with 9:4.

Just like in the semi-final, Feijen was in absolute top condition. He was focussed, on top of the match at all times. In the early phase of the match, Kazakis seemed to keep the pace with Feijen. But four missed shots, one foul and one scratched cue-ball on the break is simply too many mistakes when you play against Feijen at his A-level.

Bustamante Signed as WPBL Alternate

The World Professional Billiard League has announced the final spot on the league’s roster will go to hall of famer Francisco “Django” Bustamante.

Securing the 60th and final spot in the league as an alternate, Bustamante becomes a member of one of the most star studded teams, the New York Pride. The team includes HOF member Earl “the Pearl” Strickland, Larry “the Truth” Nevel, and fellow Filipinos Warren “the Warrior” Kiamco and Santos “Little Giant” Sambajon.

League president Larry Chiborak was elated saying “We are excited to have him be a part of the league, he knows the game, he is a phenomenal player, and he is a Bonus Ball champion.” Bustamante defeated eight of the world’s best players during the league’s experimental “Super Series” tournament that was played back in May of 2010 at the McPhilips Station Casino in Winnipeg MB. Bustamante had the honor of taking home the championship ring (pictured).

Coming into Sunday's finals of the 2013 China Open, Liu Shasha knew she was on the cusp of a golden opportunity to vault her way back to the upper echelons of not only the fiercely competitive world of Chinese women's pool, but also the entire world of women's professional pool. Since coming out of nowhere and winning the 2009 Women's World 9-ball Championship held in Shenyang, China, the diminutive and glamorous youngster has maintained her place on the Chinese national team, but she had not won any tournaments. In the lead up to this week's tournament, with 48 top women players from all parts of the globe, Liu had not been playing well in practice and was only hoping to at least reach the quarterfinals. But suddenly she found herself in the finals of one of the biggest tournaments of the year. Indeed on Sunday, in front of packed house at the Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium arena, Liu seized the moment , coming from behind in crunch time to overtake fellow teammate and young star Chen Siming to win the China Open by a nose, 9 & 8. With the win, Liu can now claim two of the biggest prizes in women's pool. She also joins her close friend and sister Fu Xiaofang who also has won these same two prestigious events. FILIPINO LEE VANN CORTEZA IS ALL BUSINESS
AS HE CAPTURES THE CHINA OPEN 9-BALL CROWN

Playing with his trademarked calm and cool demeanor, all the while exhibiting a deadly stroke and a fierce, quiet fortitude, the Philippines Lee Vann Corteza staked his claim to stardom today as he defeated Taiwanese veteran Fu Che Wei to win the 2013 China Open 9-ball in Shanghai.

The win means that the China Open title, one of pool’s biggest tournaments, remains in the Philippines at least one more year, as Corteza’s win follows countryman Dennis Orcollo’s victory in 2012.

The victory, besting a quality field of 64 top players from around the globe, is easily Corteza’s biggest to date in a professional career that has spanned nearly two decades.

For the last five of those years, Corteza’s pedigree had already been established far and wide. Everywhere he has played fellow players and fans could see that under Corteza's humble veneer and boyish smile lay a deadly serious and focused professional with a noticeable swagger that oozed confidence. This is a man who has something inside him that doesn't allow him to flinch under pressure. This is a man who knows how to close out a match.

All of these traits were on full display today in front of over 500 people at the Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium arena. The match was played at an extremely high quality with 12 of the 17 played racks being break and run outs. The outcome turned on just a few mistakes, and it was Corteza who took advantage and nailed the door shut every time he was given the opportunity.

UPSTART OMAR AL SHAHEEN BARGES INTO SEMI FINALS AT CHINA OPEN,
JOINS CORTEZA, WU AND FU FOR SUNDAY'S FINAL FOUR

Omar Al Shaheen just booked his place in pool history.

After defeating Taiwan’s Hsu Kai Lun,11-8, in the quarterfinals of the China Open 9-ball in Shanghai on Saturday night, the 20 year old Kuwaiti became the first pool player in his country, and indeed in the entire Middle East region, to ever advance to the semi-finals of a major world ranking pool event.

It is an accomplishment that will surely have profound repercussions for not only Al Shaheen’s budding career, but also for the progress of the sport in the Middle East, which is one of the few growth areas worldwide—along with China-- for the American game of pool. Whether Al Shaheen can take the prestigious crown and the $40,000 winner’s purse on Sunday is something that is entirely up to the pool gods. But the way things have fallen in place for Al Shaheen this week in Shanghai, anything must surely be in the realm of possibility.

Al Shaheen will have all he can handle and more as he takes on the Philippine veteran Lee Van Corteza in the first semi-final. In the second semi-final, Taiwan veteran Fu Che Wei will go up against his former countryman and surprise entry, the two time former world champion Wu Jiajing(formerly Wu Chia Ching), who now plays out of China.

PRO9 has established an outstanding reputation as Europes No.1 source for information on American Pool in the UK and Europe. Upcoming tournament details, prompt match reporting, exclusive images by talented photographers, superb articles by expert pundits, active pool related forums, player profiles and a very sophisticated membership - basically, an incredible information resource for the American style game in Europe.
Since it launched, PRO9 has become compulsory reading, not just for the UKs pool players, but to hundreds and thousands of pool obsessives from around the world every single day.
PRO9s members range from professional pool players, cue-sports enthusiasts, club managers, tournament organisers, pool fans and aficionados, as well as various "movers and shakers" in the cue-sports field, including entrepreneurs in the wholesale and retail sector, as well as magazine editors and television sports promoters.
Growing more and more popular every single year, PRO9 is the best placed vehicle for the promotion of your pool club, billiards brand, associated products, services and opportunities in the truly massive pan-European billiard market.
