THE 2012 GB9 NORTHERN MASTERS

New ground in British pool will be broken on Friday 13th July 2012. At the Puma Hotel in Daventry, the best American pool players in Great Britain will lock horns to contest Britain’s first ever professional 10-ball pool event at the 2012 GB9 Northern Masters.

For some time now, the code of 10-ball pool has been gathering pace across the globe with many players and fans alike considering it to be the ‘toughened up’ cousin of 9-ball. Whereas 9-ball is generally seen as a quick fire and cut-throat game, 10-ball rewards those whose safety games and tactical brains excel. A lot of the rules for 10-ball are the same as those found in 9-ball. These include pushing out after a dry break, three fouls resulting in loss of rack and for those of you who might be unfamiliar with the code, however, here is a brief rundown of the differences between 10-ball and 9-ball.

As is surely obvious from the name, 10-ball is played with 10 balls instead of 9. The first player to legally pot the 10 ball, however, still wins the rack.

The biggest difference of them all – 10-ball is a call shot game. Any shot not deemed to be an obvious, straight-line, single ball shot – combinations, banks and caroms for instance – MUST be nominated accordingly before a shot is played. If either a ball instead of that which was nominated falls into a pocket or the nominated ball falls into a pocket not nominated, the incoming player has the option to either play on or pass back to their opponent. If a ball is legally and correctly pocketed as nominated, even if other balls were pockets in addition to that which was nominated, the striker continues his innings. On the break off shot, however, no call is required and any potted ball entitles the breaker to continue at the table.

Dear all,

I am pleased to announce the beginning of a new era in British American pool, for the first time we now have an affiliated federation.

As from 1st January 2012 the European Pocket Billiard Federation kindly accepted our application to become an EPBF member and have therefore recognised us as Britain’s only American pool federation.

Without the federation British players would be unable to compete in European and world events that are sanctioned by the WPA and the EPBF, any player that wishes to compete at these events will have to be a member of the BPF (British Pool Federation).

Membership is on a yearly basis and runs from the 1st January and expires 31st December, there are three types of membership, PLATINUM, GOLD and SILVER.

Dazzling Dyno claims top spot

2010 PARTYPOKER.COM Mosconi Cup MVP Darren Appleton gave his 2012 selection chances a massive boost in Qatar as he claimed the World 9 Ball Championship in dramatic style, beating China's Li Hewen 13-12 after leading 11-3 and 12-6.

The victory moves Appleton to the top of the 2012 PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup European Rankings with Holland's Nick van den Berg staking his claim in second spot. Only the top two qualify automatically and these two are 17 points clear of third.

That position is occupied by Greece's Nikos Ekonomopoulos, whose Cinderella season may yet see him take his place in London in December as the first Greek ever to compete in the Mosconi Cup.

Other movers included Ralf Souquet who finally kick-started his season into gear with a bronze medal in Doha and the Kaiser shoots up 23 places to claim a top ten spot.

FOURSOME FROM TAIPEI ROUTS JAPAN TO WIN THE 2012 WORLD POOL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN BEIJING

Joy riding a powerful wave that had been building steadily all week, the four member Chinese-Taipei pool team cruised to an emphatic 4-0 finals victory over Japan, to lay claim to the 2012 World Pool Team Championship in the Beijing suburb of Tongzhou.

Today’s performance was yet another statement from the Taipei fearsome foursome of Chang Jun Lin, Ko Pin Yi, Fu Che Wei and female player Chieh Yu Chou. They were barely touched all week, and they showed the pool world how great individual talents can come together and perform as a well oiled machine with all parts working in harmony.

For Japan, their always smiling faces never seemed to go away, but their good fortune did. The Japanese had lived on a high wire for the last two days, winning two straight sudden death shoot outs to advance in the event.

Chinese-Taipei, though, made sure the finals never even got close to an anything’s-possible shoot out. Backed by the over 400 fans inside the Tonghzhou High School gymnasium, who had obviously taken to their cross-strait cousins after both China squads had been eliminated, the Taiwanese came out guns ablazing today. In the opening match of 8-ball doubles, the duo of Chang and Ko walloped Naoyuki Oi and Yukio Akakagariyama 6-0, to give Chinese-Taipei a 1-0 lead.

Japan looked like they would make a match of it in the second of today’s six scheduled matches, this one the 8-ball singles. Japan’s Toru Kuribayashi was up 5-2 in a race to 6, but a tenacious Fu clawed his way back. Tied at 5, Kuribayashi had the break shot but he scratched on the bust out, and Fu stepped up to clear his colors for the win, and a 2-0 finals lead.

WHITE HOT CHINESE-TAIPEI CUTS DOWN THE BRITS, WHILE A LOOSE JAPAN SHOCKS CHINA TO MOVE INTO THE FINALS OF THE WORLD POOL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN BEIJING

Team Japan, who have laughed and smiled their way through this entire event, had the last laugh tonight as they stunned a shell shocked China 2 team via a sudden death shootout in front of hundreds of vocal Chinese partisans at Tongzhou Luhe High School, to move into the finals of the 2012 World Pool Team Championship here in Beijing.

Japan will now go on to play in Friday’s final against the white-hot Chinese-Taipei team, which earlier in the day breezed past Great Britain, 4-1. The final will begin at 2pm Beijing time(GMT +8 hours).

It was the second straight win by the Japanese squad via the dramatic shootout rule, which comes into play when the two teams end their six match set tied at 3 all. Last night the Japanese, with Yukio Akagariyama, Toru Kuribayashi, Naoyuki Oi, and female player Chihiro Kawahara, held off the Philippines in the shootout, potting seven of the difficult spot shots to the Philippines’ five.

The loss by the China 2 team represented a decisive death blow to the hopes and fortunes of the home side as China fielded two squads in the 24 team tournament. The sport of pool is massively popular throughout China and the game’s tens of millions of fans were surely certain that at least one of their sides would advance to the final of this $300,000 team event.

But after last night’s bitter defeat in a shootout by Great Briatin of a very strong China 1, led by Li He Wen, Fu Jianbo, Liu Haitao, Fu Xiaofang, the superstar females Pan Xiao Ting, and former Women’s World 9-ball Champion Fu Xiaofang, all the pressure was placed on China 2 today to bring home the gold.

WITH DRAMATIC SHOOTOUT WINS, JAPAN AND GREAT BRITAIN JOIN CHINESE-TAIPEI AND CHINA 2 IN THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE 2012 WORLD POOL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN BEIJING

With team supremacy and national pride riding on every shot, Great Britain and Japan stared down some heavy pressure and won dramatic sudden death shootouts to advance to the semi-finals of the 2012 World Pool Team Championship in Beijing.

After claiming a thrilling victory over a fancied and loaded China 1 squad, and silencing the hundreds of hometown fans inside the Tongzhou Luhe High School gymnasium, in the Tongzhou district of China’s capital, Great Britain now move onto the semi-finals where they will play red hot Chinese-Taipei in Thursday’s first semi-final.

With their well played shootout victory over the Philippines, Japan will take on China 2 in the other semi-final.

It was a fitting conclusion to Day 4 of the pool world’s biggest team event, as before this point, the best teams in pool were simply biding their time until the little fish were dispensed with and the big boys and girls could finally get at each other.

The day began with 16 teams out of the original 24 facing off for the first time all week in the single elimination format. This was also the first time fans would get to see the dramatic shootout decide who advanced and who went home.

The shootout is unique to team pool and is implemented when the two teams split their six matches against each other at three matches each. The 8 ball is then put in the middle of the table down near the short rail level with the first diamond and the cue ball is placed way down at the other end near the head string. The three men and one woman on each team take turns trying to pot the 8-ball in either far corner. All players play in sequence and the team to score six hits first with a margin of two or more(6-4, 7-5, etc.) wins the match and advances to the next round.

CHINESE-TAIPEI, PHILIPPINES, CHINA 1 AND 2, JAPAN AND GREAT BRITAIN HEAD INTO THE KNOCKOUT STAGES OF THE WORLD POOL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN BEIJING

The 2012 World Pool Team Championship has arrived at the business end of the proceedings as the field of 24 pool playing nations has been reduced down to 16 teams, who will now square off in single elimination matches in Beijing for the title.

It’s been a busy three days in China’s bustling capital but it didn’t take long to figure out that the top pool playing nations in the world would easily advance. The format has ensured almost no surprises at the top of the pool food chain, as the sheer amount of matches each team has played in each contest means the chances of surprise or lucky outcomes was just about zero.

Indeed the list of top seeds is a who’s who of the world’s best pool playing countries; Chinese-Taipei, China 2, the Philippines, China 1, Japan and Great Britain.

Chinese Taipei, led by a confident squad which includes World 8-ball champion Chang Jung Lin, Fu Che Wei, Ko Pin Yi, and two-time Amway Cup champion Chieh Yu Chou, outlasted a game German team today 4-2. Germany made it through to the final 16, but they are clearly being hampered by the lack of experience of their female player, Jasmin Michel.

TOP TEAMS WIN AGAIN ON DAY 2 OF THE 2012 WORLD POOL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN BEIJING

While the atmosphere here in sultry Beijing amongst pool’s elite has certainly been cordial and relaxed, on the table the heavyweights of the pool world were in no mood for gift giving as all the favorites cruised to emphatic victories on Day 2 of the 2012 World Pool Team Championships.

Surprises in the group stages were as hard to come by as a schoolyard full of blondes in China’s sprawling and teeming capital. Great Britain, China 1 and 2, the Philippines, Taiwan and Japan all won their matches for the second straight day and ensured their places in the single elimination round of 16 which begins tomorrow. Germany finally got a win and is looking strong for a place in the final 16. South Korea won again and is probably the leading dark horse in the 24 team competition.

Things will surely explode with tension and drama once the second and third tier teams will be eliminated after today and the big guns get pointed at one another. And with $80,000 going to the winning team, plus plenty of national pride, clearly this $300,000 event is just winding up.

The nation vs. nation format on offer at the Tongzhou Luhe High School, in the Tongzhou district of Beijing is certainly built for fan-friendly showdowns. Obviously the Philippines vs. Estonia doesn’t exactly get the heart racing. But when the Philippines is staring across the table from Great Britain, you have the makings of all-time classics. And that’s because of the format which assures plenty of drama.

In each match between two countries, the teams play each other in a set of six matches, all alternate break; two races in 8 ball, two in 9-ball and two in 10-ball. One 8-ball match is men’s scotch doubles, race to 6. The other 8-ball match is a men’s singles, race to 6. In 9-ball, the teams compete in a women’s singles, race to 8, and a men’s singles race to 8. In 10-ball, the teams play one mixed doubles match(scotch doubles), race to 7, and one men’s singles match race to 7. The female player must play in the 10-ball mixed doubles match, and a 9-ball match. No player is permitted to play more than two matches per session.

Based on makeup and results so far, Great Britain is the odds on favorite to win the event. The Brits, loaded with the likes of current World 9-ball Champions, Darren Appleton, Kelly Fisher and 2007 champion Daryl Peach, have yet to be touched. On Day 2 they delivered their second straight goose egg to their opponent, blanking a game but outgunned Indian squad, 6-0.

PRO9 has established an outstanding reputation as Europes No.1 source for information on American Pool in the UK and Europe. Upcoming tournament details, prompt match reporting, exclusive images by talented photographers, superb articles by expert pundits, active pool related forums, player profiles and a very sophisticated membership - basically, an incredible information resource for the American style game in Europe.
Since it launched, PRO9 has become compulsory reading, not just for the UKs pool players, but to hundreds and thousands of pool obsessives from around the world every single day.
PRO9s members range from professional pool players, cue-sports enthusiasts, club managers, tournament organisers, pool fans and aficionados, as well as various "movers and shakers" in the cue-sports field, including entrepreneurs in the wholesale and retail sector, as well as magazine editors and television sports promoters.
Growing more and more popular every single year, PRO9 is the best placed vehicle for the promotion of your pool club, billiards brand, associated products, services and opportunities in the truly massive pan-European billiard market.
