TOP TEAMS WIN AGAIN ON DAY 2 OF THE 2012 WORLD POOL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN BEIJING
While the atmosphere here in sultry Beijing amongst pool’s elite has certainly been cordial and relaxed, on the table the heavyweights of the pool world were in no mood for gift giving as all the favorites cruised to emphatic victories on Day 2 of the 2012 World Pool Team Championships.
Surprises in the group stages were as hard to come by as a schoolyard full of blondes in China’s sprawling and teeming capital. Great Britain, China 1 and 2, the Philippines, Taiwan and Japan all won their matches for the second straight day and ensured their places in the single elimination round of 16 which begins tomorrow. Germany finally got a win and is looking strong for a place in the final 16. South Korea won again and is probably the leading dark horse in the 24 team competition.
Things will surely explode with tension and drama once the second and third tier teams will be eliminated after today and the big guns get pointed at one another. And with $80,000 going to the winning team, plus plenty of national pride, clearly this $300,000 event is just winding up.
The nation vs. nation format on offer at the Tongzhou Luhe High School, in the Tongzhou district of Beijing is certainly built for fan-friendly showdowns. Obviously the Philippines vs. Estonia doesn’t exactly get the heart racing. But when the Philippines is staring across the table from Great Britain, you have the makings of all-time classics. And that’s because of the format which assures plenty of drama.
In each match between two countries, the teams play each other in a set of six matches, all alternate break; two races in 8 ball, two in 9-ball and two in 10-ball. One 8-ball match is men’s scotch doubles, race to 6. The other 8-ball match is a men’s singles, race to 6. In 9-ball, the teams compete in a women’s singles, race to 8, and a men’s singles race to 8. In 10-ball, the teams play one mixed doubles match(scotch doubles), race to 7, and one men’s singles match race to 7. The female player must play in the 10-ball mixed doubles match, and a 9-ball match. No player is permitted to play more than two matches per session.
Based on makeup and results so far, Great Britain is the odds on favorite to win the event. The Brits, loaded with the likes of current World 9-ball Champions, Darren Appleton, Kelly Fisher and 2007 champion Daryl Peach, have yet to be touched. On Day 2 they delivered their second straight goose egg to their opponent, blanking a game but outgunned Indian squad, 6-0.

GREAT BRITAIN, CHINA 1, THE PHILIPPINES, CHINESE-TAIPEI ALL LOOK STRONG ON THE OPENING DAY OF THE 2012 WORLD POOL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN BEIJING
It’s not often that the best pool players in the world perform their normally solitary craft as members of a team. But this week in hot and muggy Beijing, we’re about to find out if the game’s top players can coalesce with each other and around flag and country.
The 2012 World Pool Team Championship got underway on Sunday inside the gymnasium of the Tongzhou Luhe High School, in the Tongzhou district of China’s capital, bringing together 24 pool teams from 23 nations(two from China.) And if the results of day 1 are any indication, the early favorites are going to perform to expectation.
Great Britain, Taiwan, China 1, China 2, the Philippines and Japan all notched victories in their opening matches in the group stage, earning a valuable three points. Only Germany fell short as they tied their match with Norway and settling for one point.
Germany’s dilemma highlights the most obvious theme here this week and that is; you’re only as good as your weakest link. The teams consist of a minimum four person teams—“persons” being the operative word, because one player on each team must be a female. That is not to imply that women are weaker, hardly. But teams that you might think would be powerhouses, like Germany with Ralf Souquet, Oliver Ortmann, and Thorsten Hohmann are left slightly shorthanded because their female player, 19 year old Jasmin Michel, while a solid player in her own right, isn’t really close to the speed of say, Great Britain’s Kelly Fisher, China 1’s Pan Xiaoting, or China 2’s Chen Siming. Although with short races and alternate break, anything is surely possible.

IN A LEGENDARY EPIC THRILLER, DARREN “DYNAMITE” APPLETON WINS THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A 13-12 VICTORY OVER LEE HE WEN
In one of the most thrilling and surreal finals ever witnessed in pool history, England’s Darren Appleton won the 2012 World 9-ball Championship, barely beating China’s Lee He Wen, 13-12 in front of hundreds of stunned fans inside Doha’s Al Sadd Sports Club.
It was a match that had everything that the sport of pool could possibly offer; fantastic, clutch shot making, an unbelievably impossible comeback, edge of your seat drama that was downright unbearable, and a finish that blew the roof off the house.
For Appleton, the win is his first World 9-ball Championship and is the culmination of a dream he has held since turning to pool from English 8-ball in the mid-2000’s. With his World 10-ball crown in 2009, his double US Opens in 2010 and 2011, and now the World 9-ball Championship, Appleton can certainly lay claim to be one of the greats of all time.
For Lee, he came within a whisker of nearly pulling off a comeback for the ages, and at the same time, earned for himself the admiration of legions of pool fans around the world who were in awe at the 31 year old’s tenacity and never-say-die spirit.
What’s more striking for Lee is that midway through the match he was nothing more than an afterthought to a sure coronation for Appleton. Lee, who had beaten Ralf Souquet in the semis, was absolutely and thoroughly written off by every single person who was watching in person or following the match online streamed over the Al Kass Sports channel.
That’s because after handily taking down Japan’s Naoyuki Ohi in the semi-final, Appleton raced out of the starting gates in the race to 13, alternate break final and was streaking towards a total rout on the way to the title.
After splitting the first four racks, Appleton caught the type of gear every single pro player dreams about when they wonder how they would hope to play in a championship final. He had several break and run outs, he punished every mistake Lee made, and as he piled up the racks and his lead grew ever wider, he literally oozed confidence.
Clearly in that rarefied zone that’s only reserved for the great champions, Appleton soon found himself out in front 9-2. Lee got one rack back to make it 9-3, but that didn’t deter the Englishman as a break and run and a clear off a scratch by the Chinese pushed the score to 11-3.

APPLETON BEATS OHI, LEE TAKES DOWN SOUQUET TO SET UP FINALS CLASH IN DOHA
After clocking in workmanlike performances, England’s Darren Appleton and China’s Lee He Wen have advanced to the final of the 2012 WPA World Pool Championship in Doha, Qatar.
The two will face each other in a race to 13, alternate break final which will begin at 6pm Doha time,(GMT +3). The winner will receive $40,000 while the runner up will take home $20,000.
As he has all week, Appleton put in an all around solid showing in his match against Japans Naoyuki Ohi. Ohi had come into the final playing perhaps the slickest pool out of all 128 player in the field. The 29 year old from Osaka had been dealt a very tough draw and performed brilliantly in each match.
While Appleton had been playing his usual solid pool, he also got very fortunate in the round of 32, when he barely escaped against New Zealand upstart, Matthew Edwards, 11-10, when Edwards inexplicably left an open table in the final rack.
But anyone who knows pool at the championship level knows that often times the eventual champion has had miracle escapes somewhere along the way to the crown.
Appleton didn’t leave anything to chance in his match with Ohi. The two played the first four racks perfectly, each breaking and running the balls twice. Ohi took the lead in the next frame but that was the last he saw of the lead.
Appleton caught Ohi at 4 then pulled a two prong strategy to take the match home; he stepped on the gas and he also kept his mistakes to the bare minimum. As usual the Englishman didn’t do anything flashy. He just took advantage of a handful of mistakes from Ohi, and didn’t take any chances when faced with shots that weren’t a sure thing. He won the match 11-7.
“I played solid,” Appleton said right after the match. “I didn’t do anything stupid. I only made one or two mistakes in the whole match and he made a bunch of mistakes. I had no luck after the break either. But I think my experience was the key. He was sitting right next to me and I could hear that he was breathing heavy. That’s my cue to just keep the pressure on. That’s when I keep my foot on his throat. I make sure not to give away any easy racks. If I have a 50/50 shot I’ll just play safe.”
Appleton is now in a position to put his stamp upon the pool world and create a bit of history. He already owns the 2009 World 10-ball title, and he is the current US Open Champion, a title he has now won two years in a row. Winning the World 9-ball crown would surely put him into the pantheon of all time greats. That’s why he has no plans on letting off on the pressure.
“Somebody has got to play very tough to beat me.”
That somebody who will surely give Appleton all he can deal with will be China’s Lee He Wen, who beat Germany’s great Ralf Souquet in the other semi-final, 11-6 . The 31 year old from Shenyang in Northeastern China often plays like a machine, just quietly and nonchalantly going about his business on the table, and seemingly unflappable.

APPLETON, OHI, LEE AND SOUQUET REACH THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE 2012 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN DOHA
After a brutally taxing day of championship pool at the highest levels, England’s Darren Appleton, Japan’s Nayoki Ohi, Germany’s Ralf Souquet and China’s Lee He Wen all made it into the semi-finals of the 2012 World 9-ball Championship in Doha, Qatar.
Both semi-finals carry the classic story line of east vs. west. In one semi-final, Appleton will face off with Ohi. In the other semi-final, Souquet will be take on Li.
The semi-finals will be a race to 11, alternate break and will be played concurrently at the Al Sadd Sports Club in Doha, beginning at 2pm local time(GMT +3). The final will be a race to 13, alternate break and will begin at 6pm.
The Al Sadd heaved with drama and emotion throughout the long day of play today as the field was cut from 32 players down to four. It was a marathon of hard core pool that when combined with the gravity of the circumstances, seemed to tax each and every player to the core. At times the winners of matches came down to a matter of who had the stamina and will power to withstand the constant pressure. Nobody who was there would argue that the last four men standing earned their spots the hard way and are battle hardened and ready for trench warfare.

AFTER CUTTING THE FIELD IN HALF, IMMONEN AND 31 OTHERS GEAR UP FOR A FRANTIC RIDE TO THE WIRE AT THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
In a long day of hard core pool and tense drama, the grind that is the toughest pool competition in the world kicked into high gear on Wednesday as the unforgiving single elimination knockout rounds commenced at the 2012 World 9-ball Championship .
The day started with 64 players eyeing the ultimate prize of world supremacy in 9-ball, and ended with 32 of them happy and relieved to play another day, and the other 32 seriously considering a long lonely walk into the Qatari desert.
Some of the scripts played out as expected, while others offered fans twists and turns right up to the last ball.
With 13 players in the final 64, the Philippines had the most to lose and indeed that’s exactly what happened as 8 Pinoys, including 2010 World 9-ball Champion Francisco Bustamante and 2006 champion Ronnie Alcano, went down to defeat. But Pinoy pool fanatics can take heart; the legend Efren Reyes is still kicking, as is the country’s current top player, Dennis Orcullo.
Continuing with a macro view of the championship landscape, Germany put in an all around solid performance today, as did the Chinese. But out of all the countries, the Taiwanese are looking like the team to beat this year.
Based upon some of the upstart performances in the group stages, the morning session with 8 tables in action offered good possibilities for a few upsets, but instead it became a confirmation of that age old phrase, ‘the cream rises to the top.’
Germany’s Ralf Souquet, Taiwan’s Fu Che We and the Netherland’s Nick van den Berg all beat back pretenders to the crown. As did the Philippines’ Orcullo, who took a measure of revenge against Hong Kong’s Andrew Kong, who had beaten the Filipino in the group stages.
“The pressure is very big here,” Orcullo admitted after his match. “You just have to deal with it because it’s only going to get bigger.”
