Re-Reigning Champion - Darren Appleton, Great Britain All photography ©Takao Takayama at www.onthehill.jp used by Pro9 with permission. Darren Appleton - 2011 US Open 9 Ball Champion - again!
"Dynamite" Daz Does it Again! Unbelievable, unthinkable, Darren Appleton has beaten Shawn Putnam 13:6 in his second consecutive Grand Final in as many years... It's only been done twice before in the 36 years of US Open tournaments - history is being written this night, and writ large is the Yorkshireman's name tonight - Darren Appleton - 2011 US Open 9 Ball Champion.
Founded in 1976 by Barry Behrmann, this year marks the 36th Annual U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships - widely considered to be the most significant annual pool tournament held on US soil, and this year they are celebrating a near full 250 player field, including a good contingent of European players, allegedly vying for vital Mosconi Cup ranking points.
The tournament is open to all-comers, although the $500 entry fee keeps the standard high, and in a unique twist all previous champions are given free entry to this tournament for life. There is still $50,000 added to the prize fund - guaranteed, no matter how many entrants had enlisted, and there's seating for up to 300 fans to watch in the playing arena.
Women play alongside the men, and Europe is well represented in this event, not least because it figures highly in the rankings for the Mosconi Cup team selection process - in recent years it has been won by Finland's Mika Immonen - twice, and the reigning champion is no less than Yorkshire's Darren Appleton, so we've all got our fingers crossed for another scintillating performance from our European players this year.

Olympic-Online Baltic Pool League 2011 BK Club9 Boulingo ir Biliardo Klubas "Undinė" Jonavos g. 40 Kaunas Lithuania www.pokernews.ee www.undine.lt www.olympic-online.com Full Rankings List - small pdf file
Saturday/Sunday 15-16 October 2011
Winners Agnė Jarušauskaite and Denis Grabe Grabe made a perfect run in Lithuania
Last weekend was held the final qualification stage of Olympic-Online Baltic Pool League 2011. This time the game was 8-ball.
Once again a great number of participants turned out as 68 players in the Men's Division and 11 players in Women's Division participated in the event. The Men’s event featured such names as Erki Erm and Denis Grabe (Team Olympic-Online) that had just returned from their Asian and European competition tourney. They both needed a spot in the final to qualify for the final event. However the first of them failed in his quest for glory as he lost 7-5 in the quarter final to Lithuanian Paulius Tamkevićiusele who later lost in the semi final to his fellow countryman Nerius Paśkevicius by a score 7-4.
It was the well fancied Lithuanian Leonas Monciuskas who faced Grabe in the other semi final. The race to 7 match was quite a thriller till the score on the board was 5-5. It was then that Grabe took the control of the match and finished it off 7-5 to claim a well deserved spot in the final. The very promising final had all the ingredients of a high quality match – Lithuanian experience against Estonian youth... And a high quality match it turned out to be. Unfortunately for Paśkevicius it was Grabe that showed his quality by crushing the Lithuanian with a final score of 7-0. Once again Grabe proved that regardless of his young age he is at the moment undoubtedly the best there is in the Baltics. After the match Grabe commented that this year he has made a great leap in his playing quality and although the semi final was quite even the rest of the tournament provided quite comfortable wins for him all the way. He added that he can’t wait to participate in the final event that is to be held in his home club.

 | Accu-Stats Video Productions - The Only Way To Watch Pool |
www.accu-stats.com Accu-Stats.com provide superb multi-camera PPV from US Open
First impressions of the coverage from the US Open are very impressive, as the well practiced team from Accu-Stats.com sashayed into action, the high resolution image was crisp and uninterrupted as they obviously have copious bandwidth to play with, and the multi-camera switching between the operator controlled cameras (including a slightly over-used "jimmy-jib" crane camera) was right on the button - complimenting and anticipating the commentator's needs precisely.
Accu-Stats Video Productions have been recording pool matches since the mid-1980's, and Accu-Stats founder, Pat Fleming, invented the score-keeping method, still referred to today, as the only definitive way of grading the quality of play in pool matches. As you can imagine, there's not much they don't know about broadcasting - Fleming was rewarded for his seemingly tireless efforts benefiting the billiards industry by being inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame in 2008.
If you want to see what it's all about, www.accu-stats.com is where you can sign up for the US Open PPV coverage - the morning session times are absolutely perfect for our European audience, with matches starting at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm London time, (or 5, 7 and 9pm if you are in central Europe) and the evening matches for the die-hard fans are at midnight, 2am and 4am.

MATCHROOM SPORT can announce that Holland’s Johan Ruijsink will return this December as captain of defending PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup defending champions, Europe. Ruijsink, 45, will be taking the helm for his fourth Mosconi Cup, and he has the enviable record of being undefeated thus far in the competition.
He captained the side for the first time in December 2006 in Rotterdam and stopped the rot after three successive American wins when the match was tied at 12-12. The following year was perhaps his greatest triumph when he took a team of underdogs to the MGM Grand and thumped America 11-7.
Ruijsink stepped down for a couple of years but returned to the fray at the York Hall in December 2010, when he galvanised a strong team and they emerged 11-8 champions after an epic four days.
“As you can imagine I am very proud and honoured to be asked to lead the European team to yet another victory,” said a delighted Ruijsink.
“Although the team has not been announced in full yet, I have full confidence in the European team and its players.”
“I’m very excited about the form that Chris Melling has shown this season and I know that every player that makes it on our team will have fully deserved it and will give, just as I will do, his maximum effort to make sure that we will dominate the Mosconi Cup.”
