Maria Catalano ends Reanne Evans' 90-match unbeaten run on snooker circuit

The 29-year-old’s historic 3-1 victory came in the semi-finals of the inaugural Northern Championship at the North East Derbyshire Snooker Centre, Clay Cross.

Catalano, who went on to beat Hong Kong ’s Yu Ching Ching 3-1 in the final, said: “I’m over the moon to get a win over Reanne, really, because it’s been such a long time. We’ve had quite a few close matches, to be fair. She started off really well as she normally does. Then the frames went a little bit scrappy. We both missed a couple and I just managed to pot a few more than she did.”

“It wasn’t a fantastic match but any win over Reanne is a good win. So, I’ll take it.”

Catalano, Ronnie O’Sullivan’s cousin, and seven-time women’s world champion Evans both live in Dudley, West Midlands.

Pool chalk purchase pays dividends for customer at The Pro Shop

A simple order for a couple of twin packs of Longoni's Blue Diamond Chalk earned a lucky customer at Pro9's Pro Shop an incredible bonus... At odds of 550 to 1, the first balls drawn for Friday's EuroMillions draw produced the Main Ball No.6 and Lucky Star No.6 to earn a fantastic 3 day Pay-Per-View prize for the lucky winner.

The epic race-to-100 match between two of the world's top Ten-Ball players for a cool winner-take-all cash prize of $20,000 finished the first day of play with South Dakota's Shane Van Boening leading by a slim 35-31 margin over Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan.

Alex won the lag and the first rack, but then trailed all the way to 7-4 down as Shane dominated the table. Pagulayan needed to make the match a bit more technical with more safety play to prevent Shane from just running racks, and that's exactly what he did, tying Van Boening up in knots with some supreme safety and position play, taking the Filipino a 15-11 lead, and then an 18-14 lead. Alex continued to lead, 25-22, 26-24, but this margin was not to last, and as the night ended, "The South Dakota Kid" ran-out a massive seven-pack (rumoured to be spurred on by an impromptu side bet offered to Shane for running out the remainder of the match, by "Dippy" Dave Peat). Running seven straight racks certainly made an impact on the first session's scoreline, as Van Boening finished ahead by a 4 racks - a useful margin on this tight pocketed Diamond table.

Taking place in the new TAR Studio located in Las Vegas, play continues through Saturday and Sunday featuring 3 high quality cameras with operators following all the action, with superb commentary by veterans Billy Incardona and Jay Helfert, and you can still buy PPV access to what is rapidly becoming the most talked about match in recent times.

Fast sale expected for Transatlantic tussle

TICKETS FOR the 2011 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup are now on sale. Taking place from 8th to 11th December at the MGM Grand Conference Center, the event runs from 11am to 4pm each day and features two five man teams representing Europe and the USA doing battle in a series of singles and doubles matches.

Tickets are priced at $35 per day or $120 for the four day season passes and booking charges will apply.

Currently the Mosconi Cup is sold through Ticketmaster (1-800-745-3000) or MGM Resorts Contact Center (1-866-740-7711) and also available at Ticketmaster and MGM Resorts Ticketing Outlets.

For On line purchases please refer to Ticketmaster.com and search Mosconi Cup.

“Following last year’s event in London, when five of the seven sessions were sold out well before the start of the tournament, I am expecting tickets to fly out the door this year,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn.

“The demand for Mosconi Cup tickets has grown each year and in 2009 in Vegas, we were approaching full houses at the four sessions. There are just a couple more events to go to determine European selection and just the US Open for the Americans and once the teams are announced the build-up will really begin!”

The penultimate event of the 2011 GB9 season has come to a conclusion with Kevin Uzzell, Daryl Peach and Eric Dockerty taking the gold home with them at the Southern Masters. Only 26 days after the players had left Daventry off of the back of the Northern Masters, they returned to the same venue to have another stab at those crucial ranking points that are fast running out as the season draws to a conclusion. BI-G THING IN A SMALL PACKAGE

BI ZHU QING IS THE SURPRISE WINNER OF THE 2011 WOMEN'S WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A 9-7 WIN OVER CHEN SIMING.

Bi Zhu Qing stands no more than 4’11”. But Sunday night in Shenyang, this tiny woman became a giant of women’s pool and a sporting hero in the most populace nation on earth. This after the relatively unknown from Beijing defeated world number 2 and heavy favorite Chen Siming 9-7 to capture the 2011 Women’s World 9-ball Championship.

Bi’s title win capped an incredible day for the 23 year old. Up until Sunday, she was mostly unknown beyond her professional peers in China, where the women’s game is wildly popular and its top players are legitimate stars. She is ranked number 7 in China and 81st worldwide and had never won any pool tournaments of note.

That all changed on the last day of the Women's World 9-Ball Championship in this northeastern city of 7 million people. After she quietly worked her way through the field at the Liaoning Hunnan Sports Training Arena beginning Thursday, Bi shocked defending champion and world number one Fu Xiaofang in Sunday’s semi-final, 9-6. Playing the role of underdog perfectly, Bi played seemingly without a care in the world, while the pressure of stardom and expectation appeared at times to get to Fu.

Bi’s finals match against Chen later in the evening, played in front of over 1200 people, didn’t go quite as smoothly as the semi-final against Fu, and she could have very nearly lost. But Bi freewheeled long enough to build up a decent cushion and held on down the nervy stretch to cross the finish line first.

For Chen the loss was a major disappointment, but like Fu earlier, the mantle of expectation seemed to weigh heavily on her shoulders. The 17 year old pool prodigy has won three big tournaments in the last year and a half, including a gold medal in snooker in the Asian games. As a result she has built up a major following and entered the finals a heavy favorite to capture the crown. Chen, though, spent most of the middle part of the match looking uncomfortable and slightly out of sorts, as her deadly accuracy failed her on several occasions. Chen made a great fight back at the end, but it was too little too late.

Shane secures spot as race nears its end

WITH JUST one tournament remaining in the ten event PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup USA Rankings, Shane Van Boening is now guaranteed a spot in December's American line-up at the MGM Grand, following victory at the Steve Mizerak Championship in Florida.

With just the US Open remaining, the "South Dakota Kid" is now over the line and confirmed for his fifth consecutive Mosconi Cup berth. Mike Dechaine in second place looks a lock to be making his Mosconi debut alongside Van Boening.

In third spot, Johnny Archer has made a monumental effort in the last six months to drag himself from way down the rankings up to third spot with a series of consistent performances that puts him in the driving seat to make his record breaking 15th appearance.

After that it gets interesting. Shawn Putnam and Rodney Morris fill the next two spots but Corey Deuel and Dennis Hatch are lurking in sixth and seventh places, with Hunter Lombardo, possibly the most improved player of the year, coming up on the blind-side.

EAG International

This is the nearest thing the UK Pool and Billiards Industry has to an official exhibition, and although the vast majority of the event is tightly focused on the coin-op trade, there are occasionally opportunities to network with some of the bigger names with specific relevance to the cuesports industry. It can be a bit of a hit-and-miss affair, and despite it being a trade-only event, and much, much smaller than you might imagine, I still think it's worth a visit.

Steve Mizerak Championship: Day 4

And then there was 1. Final day of the Steve Mizerak Championship and after all the chalk dust settled, it was who was crowned the new champion.

The day stared with a thrilling match between Alex Pagulayan and Donny Mills. Both players played cautious, as to not make a costly mistake that would put their opponent any advantageous position on the table. The score reached hill hill and it was Mills would send Pagulayan to a fourth place finish and a $6,000 prize.

Up next was the hot seat match between Shane Van Boening and Hunter Lombardo. Both players had been playing superbly all weekend. SVB got up 2-0 early. Lombardo tied it up at 2 games a piece. After that it was all SVB, as he didn’t let his foot off of the accelerator and took the rest of the racks to win the hot seat by a score of 8-2.

Lombardo would go on to face Mills in the third place match. This would be yet another match for the ages. Mills would go up by 2 then Lombardo tied the score and went up by 1 himself. Mills would then tied it back up and go up again. Mills would reach the hill first to Lombardo’s 6. Of course, Lombardo would tie it up hill hill and set up one final rack to advance to the finals. Mills got a bad roll after sinking the 8ball and left himself a very difficult shot on the none ball. Mills’ only option was a tough 9-10 combination in the corner pocket. The crowd held their breath as Mills lined up the shot and cheered loudly when he nailed the shot and sank the 10 ball to win and advance to the finals. Lombardo would finish in third place and claim the $9,000 prize.

PRO9 has established an outstanding reputation as Europes No.1 source for information on American Pool in the UK and Europe. Upcoming tournament details, prompt match reporting, exclusive images by talented photographers, superb articles by expert pundits, active pool related forums, player profiles and a very sophisticated membership - basically, an incredible information resource for the American style game in Europe.
Since it launched, PRO9 has become compulsory reading, not just for the UKs pool players, but to hundreds and thousands of pool obsessives from around the world every single day.
PRO9s members range from professional pool players, cue-sports enthusiasts, club managers, tournament organisers, pool fans and aficionados, as well as various "movers and shakers" in the cue-sports field, including entrepreneurs in the wholesale and retail sector, as well as magazine editors and television sports promoters.
Growing more and more popular every single year, PRO9 is the best placed vehicle for the promotion of your pool club, billiards brand, associated products, services and opportunities in the truly massive pan-European billiard market.
