Shane Back in Business After Riviera Glory

SHANE VAN BOENING, an ever-present in the US team at the past four Mosconi Cups, played his way back into contention for this year’s side with victory at the US Open 10-Ball Championship at the Riviera, Las Vegas.

‘The South Dakota Kid’ took down Spain’s David Alcaide 11-6 in the championship match to cap a great week. Van Boening’s win sees him climb to No.2 in the rankings from a lowly 10th spot.

Van Boening had recently returned from a lengthy sojourn in Asia which included a number of highly successful match ups in Manila. He played seven sets against the likes of Ronnie Alcano, Francisco Bustamante and Jeff De Luna and was undefeated.

All that high quality practice stood him in good stead for Las Vegas, and with four events to go in the qualifying series, Van Boening will be favourite to take one of the top three automatic positions.

56.5 points clear at the top, though, is Mike ‘The Fireball’ Dechaine whose 7th place finish at the Riv ensured that he maintained his No.1 position. Corey Deuel, with seven Mosconi Cup appearances to his name, is zeroing in on Mo.8 as he finished third to jump two places into the coveted third spot, 55 points ahead of 2009 MVP Dennis Hatch.

Association of Billiard Professionals Announces Members & Goals

Association of Billiard Professionals (ABP) Announces Members & Goals

The ABP represents the world’s best billiard players that are uniting together for a common goal. Over the years, players have endured many hardships and has found it necessary to try to reach common ground between the promoters of events, international associations, and the professional players.

Without a voice, players have not been able to adequately communicate and work with promoters and other industry entities. Promoters and associations likewise have been lacking in instruction and guidance from the pro players.

Some events and associations have not been able to sometimes protect the players from issues ranging from prize money payments, equipment issues and conditions, and rules/format. As the saying goes, “there is strength in numbers”, and this has led to the formation of the ABP.

The ABP led by some notable names such as Johnny Archer, Mika Immonen, Rodney Morris and many others in a committee of top players unified under a common purpose: To elevate the sport of pocket billiards and protect and assist in the well being of every player.

MATCHROOM SPORT can announce that the 2011 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters will be taking place at the SM City North EDSA Mall in Metro Manila, Philippines from Saturday 3rd to Monday 5th September. Following three years in Las Vegas, the last as a 64 player event, the Masters heads to Manila for the first time, reverting back to a 16 player invitational field. The prize-fund is $68,000 with $20,000 going to the winner.

The event will be live from start to finish on Solar Sports, the Philippines’ leading sports channel and the line-up for the Masters, now in its 19th year, will be announced in early July.

The defending champion is current World 8 Ball king Dennis Orcollo, who will be one of four Pinoy cuemen in the tournament, as well as a host of international stars.

The list of Masters winners over the years contains some of pool’s most illustrious names including five-time winner Ralf Souquet, Earl Strickland, Alex Pagulayan, Tony Drago, Daryl Peach, Darren Appleton, Alex Lely, Raj Hundal and Thomas Engert.

See catapults into contention

HUIDJI SEE of Holland, the recent shock winner of the WPA World Ten Ball Championship, can now give himself another goal for this season – a coveted spot in the European side at this December’s PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup in Las Vegas.

See’s epic 11-8 win over Fu Jianbo secured him his first major title and with it a mammoth 30 Mosconi Cup points which saw him rocket from No.17 all the way to fourth. What’s more with just a point separating him from third placed Darren Appleton, See is well placed to capitalise on his good form and hitch a ride to Vegas.

“I did not expect to do this well at the World Ten Ball, so I did not think about being in the Mosconi cup team this year, but now since I actually have a chance to get in the team!

“Being in the Mosconi Cup team would be an honour. It is an amazing event with the five best players of the year playing the five best players from America of that year.

“Like I said, I did not think I had a decent chance to get in the team, but now I am back in the game again. It’s still not a sure thing that I will get in, but at least I am a contender again!

“Hopefully I can keep up the good work and get in the Top 3, so I can make the team,” he added.

Van Boening Victorious at 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship

The finals of the 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship was between two highly decorated professionals from both sides of the Atlantic. After 6 days the field of 96 player, representing 10 countries, whittled down to U.S. favorite Shane Van Boening and Spain’s David Alcaide. Held at the Riviera Hotel & Casino and produced by CueSports International (CSI), in front of an enthusiastic crowd, Van Boening was crowned the 2011 champion winning 11-6.

Starting the day four players returned for day six of the event. The first match featured Spain’s David Alcaide versus relatively unknown player, Dennis Haar from Terre Haute, Indiana. This was Haar’s first professional 10-ball tournament and his best finish in any big event. Haar cleared a path to the final four by way of defeating top players James Baraks, Mitch Ellerman, Mike Dechaine, and Jonathan Pinegar. Unfortunately, his efforts fell short against Alcaide who jumped ahead at 6-5. Haar jumped and hung a 1-ball for Alcaide to get on the hill. At 7-5, Haar missed a 4-7 combination that would cost him the match.

In the winner side finals match between Van Boening and Corey Deuel, both players appeared to be “trading errors,” said TAR commentators. They exchanged racks until the score was 4-4 when Deuel hooked himself on the 7-ball. Deuel would win one more game to make it 5-4 before Van Boening took the next four, breaking and running on hill to win 8-5. Deuel and Alcaide would meet next for the semi-finals match, race to 9, win by two games.

Reyes Crowned U.S. Open One Pocket Champion

“The Magician” Efren Reyes went undefeated through the full 64-player field to become the 2011 (12th) U.S. Open One Pocket Champion at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Produced by CueSports International, the $10,000 added event drew the finest one pocket players from around the world as well a sophisticated room full of spectators. Reyes defeated poker star Chris Gentile in the single set finals 5-2. This was Gentile’s first U.S. Open One Pocket and his most successful finish in a major one pocket event.

Gentile had an impressive showing, besting Mike Davis 4-1 and Rafael Martinez 4-3. To enter the semi-finals, Gentile narrowly avoided a loss to “The Pearl” Earl Strickland when he came back from being down 3-0 to win 4-3. In the a-side finals, Gentile’s run was halted by Reyes. Reyes took a quick lead 3-1 after an unfortunate scratch by Gentile. After an aggressive cut shot on the 3 ball, Reyes gave up game five but had the break up 3-2. Gentile chipped away at the stack and responded to Reyes’s moves but in the end, the magician worked his magic and closed out the set.

17-19 June 2011 from Barceló Daventry Hotel

Fond memories will doubtless be rekindled as the GB 9 Ball Tour returns to the Barceló Hotel in Daventry next month for the third annual Paul Medati Trophy.

As many people throughout various codes of billiard sport will already know, Paul lost his fight against lung cancer in 2008 at the age of 65, very shortly after the inaugural GB9 season had come to a close. During his career as a snooker player throughout the 80s and early 90s, as well as his briefer stint within American pool, his was an infectious and warm character which has been missed by countless players and fans alike, and naturally the decision to rename a GB9 tournament in his honour was well received back in 2009.
