Day Five of the World Team Championships

On day five of the World Team Championships only the one-loss side was in action. It was certainly a little surprise that Team Netherlands with Niels Feijen and Nick van den Berg have been eliminated from the event by the Japanese team. The Asian squad was up 3:0 as Alex Lely and Huidji See made it 3:2. Feijen played a hill-hill match against Masaaki Tanaka as his opponent run-out the table.

Great Britain 1 had a very easy match against Israel. After four matches everything was already over. At the same time the second British quartet was in the Shoot-Out against Greece and lost it 3:6. Serbia also needed the Shoot-Out to finally beat the Czech Republic.

In comparison, Germany (4:1 vs. Croatia), Norway (4:1 vs. Morocco) and Finland (4:0 vs. Slovakia) all had relatively easy jobs as they secured their last 16 places.

Denmark killed the dreams of Team Canadian in a very exciting match. 4:2 was the result after the six matches. Jason Klatt was ahead 6:5 in his 10-Ball match as he missed an easy seven ball. Kasper Thygesen took the chance and ran out both this rack and the next game.

Today also saw the first livestream. Please check out www.cueball-vision.de for all the needed information. For the first time in pool-history there was a field-reporter in action who interviewed the coaches during the matches. Johan Ruijsink from the dutch team was the first “victim” of this very special and interesting world premiere.

Five nations continue to battle for pool supremacy in Indiana

The field has slimmed down to the single elimination stages at the Horseshoe Casino in Indiana, and the remaining field of players is still literally stacked full of Europeans including Tony Southern and Matt Duffy from Great Britain.

Sweden, Belgium and Finland are also represented in the Quarter Finals as well with Henrik Larrson, Kurt Deklerck and Jouni Tahti all making it through the double elimination stages.

The USA is still the single nation with the most competitors still in with a shot as Nick West, John Reynolds and Charlie Hans are all nicely spread throughout the field and will all be hoping to keep the trophy on US soil.

Four Men Qualify for Championship Rounds

AGIPI BILLIARD MASTERS 2010 QUALIFICATION STAGES - DAY THREE

Our last day at the AGIPI Billiard Masters dawned snowy and chilly but the action in the arena was just beginning to find its heat. On table one Kyung-Roul Kim had to have a win against Roland Forthomme to keep his chances alive. On table two Jean-Christophe Roux knew that his chances were already gone but still he wished a good show against Nikos Polychronopoulos.

As is usually always the case, the early innings were spent adjusting to the rails. Runs of 1, 2 and 3 get the arms accustomed to the conditions of the day and prepare for grander things to come. Kim was the first to show comfort. In inning 3 he presented a run of 10 points to set the early mark and claim the first bonus of the day. At this point he led Forthomme 12-4 with an average of 4.0.

Roux had not shown his true form this week and today things also were not going his way. By the fifth inning he trailed 18-5. He was not off much. His caroms were just barely missing the mark time and again. His frustration showed more with each return to the chair. Sometimes the gods ignore your pleas. It is a terrible feeling, as being lonely in a crowd. The audience so wanted his points to make, but the balls refused all offers.

 British Pool Legend helping kids!

Donating pool tables to youth clubs

Imran “The Maharaja” Majid, the UK's number 1 ranked pool player in 5 out of the last 6 years, spent time in Manchester again working on a personal vision to help children enjoy the benefits of playing pool. Imran is on a mission to donate pool tables to youth clubs throughout the UK, concentrating on areas that suffer from social deprivation and low income. He believes he has built a bridge to enable any child living in these underprivileged communities to be part of something better and be presented with an opportunity to learn the game and have fun.

Together with the Manchester City Football’s registered charity, City In the Community (CITC), Imran donated a pool table to the Sporting Edge Community Centre in Openshaw, East Manchester.

Sporting Edge Community Centre provides a safe area in East Manchester for kids in the local area to come and play sports and other fun activities; it also gets youngsters visiting from North Manchester as they are very few facilities available to the youth in these areas. East Manchester is considered one of the most socially deprived and poor areas in Manchester.

Karl Boyes - The Changing Face of Pool

Working late nights in pool halls, both on and off the table, 6am is an hour more likely to be seen pre-sleep than post. Today is an exception to that fact. Today, five alarm calls (four mechanical and one useless-before-now early rising housemate) drag me up and away from my duvet to make the 114 mile trip from Leicester to Blackpool. Today, I am interviewing Karl Boyes.

Being 'environmentally aware', or as certain people like to call it, 'someone who can't drive', car sharing is of utmost importance. So after the short train ride to the sleepy village of Oakham, seeing David Carter smiling in his driveway ready to ferry me the rest of the journey was of some relief on this record breakingly cold January morning. Conversation on the road dipped into weighty issues such as the new and improved GB9 season, which sees hotels hosting British 9 Ball events for the first time; and the finer points of Jason Manford's stand-up routine, until talk naturally drifts on to the topic of the day, Mr Boyes. David Carter has been Karl's agent since May 2009 and by the 27 year old cueist's own admission, a major factor in his resurgence back to the business end of big time pocket billiards. A young man seemingly poised to ride the big waves of success following his 'on-debut' Bronze medal at the 2007 World 9 Ball Championships, Karl mysteriously dropped off the radar. Two years on and following a handful of superb results in recent months including, 7th place in the US Open, finishing as the highest placed British entrant; a Eurotour Runner-Up in Spain; and a member of the successful Great British team at the EPBF Nations Cup; I decided there was no better time to talk to Karl.

After travelling along the famous Blackpool Prom and arriving at Karl's house he shares with partner and fellow Pool star, 2008 Ladies World English 8 Ball Champion, Lynette Horsburgh, we exchanged greetings and got straight down to business; lunch. A lesser reporter, or maybe one with a schedule planned might have been put out by the news that they were accompanying messrs Boyes and Carter into town for food and shopping. I, unsurprisingly, had no such schedule planned and was more than happy to allow Karl to play tour guide and play it well. Full-bellied and with Karl and myself in agreement that David's new cap didn't suit him, we returned to base and I was introduced to Karl's immaculate Dynamic II table, sat proudly in a professional double-garage conversion off of the main hall. The break marks weigh heavily in the favour of Ten Ball, possibly 80 / 20 over 9 Ball. The lighting rig is ideal. The cushions play perfect. It was with a heavy heart that I declared time on the play just an hour in however, the clock was was ticking and there was lots to get through. Over the next two hours, Karl talked fluently, positively and with refreshing honesty on topics ranging from his life changing fitness regime to the frustrations of being a professional pool player in modern times.

British Wheelchair Tour kicks off with new two day format

There's a very exciting year in prospect for Britain 's wheelchair pool players as tour organisers have restructured the tour and the best news is, it's not too late to join.

The tour can now welcome players of widely ranging ability with a new two division structure that means that non-professional players can battle amongst themselves in a new "Challenge" division as well as having the opportunity of matching themselves against the elite players on the tour.
