Appleton is first British player to be WPA No.1

A fantastic year for Yorkshire's Darren Appleton has been officially recognised by the WPA with the publication of the updated Ranking List showing him 100 points clear of his nearest rival.

The new Ranking System for men was approved in January 2009 with players earning points from selected ranking events. Players retain the points they earn from events for twelve months, or until the event is held again. If an event has been played as a ranking tournament in any year and is not played the following year, those points will be deducted on 31st December each year. All players who participate in WPA sanctioned events that meet ranking status will earn points.

Congratulations to Darren from all of us at Pro9.

Appleton will officially be No.1 Ranked Pool Player in the World!

All of Great Britain should be celebrating this day, as Darren Appleton brings yet more glory to our nation, and another chapter is written in the history of pool as he becomes the first ever British player to hold the coveted WPA World No.1 spot.

To mark this absolutely momentous occasion we present these bonus photographs from Qatar courtesy of a Qatari based Pro9'er. Photographs from Qatar have been as rare as gold dust, so we would like to publicly thank Colin Brocklehurst for these fantastic images.

Craig crushes competition at St. Albans

32 entrants playing on eight recently refurbished tables at the St. Albans Hurricane Room paid £31 each to create a handsome £960 total prize fund for this event.

The format was group stages followed by a single elimination knockout from the Last 16 Stage onwards as the players battled for a share of the cash and glory!

Jordan's Halal Al Saresi is one of the best Arab snooker players at this event, and in a surprise upset, he has eliminated WPA No.1 ranked Ralf Souquet from Germany in the Last 32 stage of this Qatari event (photo was taken the day before his match with Ralf).

Qatar International Open 9-Ball Championship

Six of Britain's pool superstars are fighting for international glory and a share of the massive $150,000 prize fund in Qatar this week. The UK heroes are Darren Appleton, Daryl Peach, Jonni Fulcher, Karl Boyes, Chris Melling and Imran Majid.

The 2nd Stage of this event is a complicated double elimination format with 96 players in total. The 32 losers of the first will battle qualification as usual on the one-loss-side, but the 32 players who win their first round match will meet another 32 players who have been seeded into the second round of the winners side.

Confused? Don't be! Suffice to say, that when the 3rd Stage begins it will comprise of the Last 32 players and will proceed as the more usual single elimination format until a champion is determined.

Neils Feijen, Daryl Peach (wiinner), Francisco Bustamante, and Marcus Chamat
these 4 players scoop a total of €19,000 from the prize fund by getting on this podium!

Peach edges out The Terminator in hill-hill final!

The beautiful city of Lugo in northern Spain was, for the third consecutive year the venue for this popular event.

This year, largely due to the economic crisis and the proximity of the Qatar Open, the entries were lower than expected.

The event with 30,000 euros in the prize fund attracted only 90 participants but what it lacked in quantity was compensated for by the quality.

No less than 3 current world champions and one ex world champion were attracted to this corner of Spain. Current 8 ball champion and world ranked number one, Ralf Souquet, 9 ball champion Daryl Peach, Straight Pool champion Niels Feijen were joined by ex-champ Oliver Ortmann. These weren’t the only “names” at the event, Francisco Bustamante made the long trip from the Philipinnes to play in the tournament and to stage some exhibitions during the Spanish Championships which take place immediately after the “Open”.

The brackets were littered with household names such as Marcus Chamat from Sweden, David Alcaide from Spain together with last year’s winner Francisco Diaz also of Spain and runner up Manuel Gama of neighbouring Portugal.

The venue was a Congress Centre on the banks of Lugo’s River Minho. 25 Dynamic II tables were set up and there was live streaming from the main table.

Seven new tournaments will be staged in the coming season as part of World Snooker's innovative Pro Challenge Series.

The series, which starts in late July, will be open to all 96 players on the professional circuit, giving extra opportunities to play competitive matches and compete for prize money.

The series will supplement the Tour of world ranking and invitation tournaments run by World Snooker.

Four of the seven events in the Pro Challenge Series will use the standard 15-red format, while the other three will use the Super Sixes format, which was first trialled at the recent Betfred.com World Snooker Championship.

Action from The Barnsley Open - the BWPPA's second ranking event of the season

Roy rocks at Barnsley...

Barnsley produced a tournament full of joy for Roy Kimberley as he took on all comers and came out victorious in two of the three events staged at the British Wheelchair Pool Players Association's ranking event in Yorkshire this weekend.

It will be especially pleasing for him as the overall top ranked player at the end of the season will win a signed Wayne Holmes cue worth a cool £1,000!

There were a few new faces at this event and it was newcomer Shaun Madin who took the Challenge Event at his first BWPPA appearance with a strong 5-2 victory over Carl Gannon in the final.

100th Euro Tour bonus prize:

The IBPF announced at the recent Dynamic German Open Euro Tour event that it will be paying a bonus of €2000 to the player who is ranked 100th on the European rankings after the Dynamic Euro Tour in Austria.

The reason behind this is the fact that this will be the 100th Euro Tour event since the tournament series started in 1992. There is a condition that whoever that player might be, they must have competed at the event in Austria otherwise it will be carried over to the next event in the Netherlands. That condition will continue until a player is participating and is ranked 100 after the event.

IBPF President David Morris said “It is a great achievement to reach the 100th Eurotour and what a prize to give. Somebody will be smiling after that event with €2000 that they never thought they could win by being ranked 100th on the European rankings”
