2013 Total 9 Ball Rookie Rampage Champion - Sunesh Garib

Garib on a Rampage in The Hurricane Room St Albans

Saturday 2nd March 2013 was the date for this year's edition of the T9B Rookie Rampage. The Rookie Rampage was first held in 2012 and was won by Mark Singleton, 34 players were looking to follow in his footsteps this year but there could only be one winner. The T9B created Double Chance format was used for this event and again it showed why this is the most exciting format in the UK right now. All players were entered in the draw twice and at 10am when the matches kicked off there was one thought on each player's mind... Could I be the first Double Champion and scoop the Jackpot prize of £480. Players had a nice surprise on arrival as all tables were equipped with an Ultimate Breakmaster, a set of Aramith match balls and new scoreboards, all of this equipment is now supplied by Total9ball.

The Draw was completed by T9B tournament director Nicole Hansen and the first round offered some quality matches. The pick of the matches in my opinion was Tom Staveley v Sunny Garib. Tom a committed player to T9B events who has attended 30 out of the 35 events run and Sunny who is a relatively new player. Tom used his tournament experience and ran out a 7-3 winner, it was clear though from comments made by Tom after the match that Sunny was a good cueist who will be a top player.

Anthony Illingworth caught the eye during the early rounds Winning matches 7-3 (David Hood), 7-6 (Scott Foley) in the first half of the draw and 7v2, 7v3 and 7v2 against Paul Tee, Lee Happs and Rattapol Sassmann respectively in the second half. Ant was however defeated in the Last 16 by new player Billy Brown 7v5 and Aslam Abubaker 7v6 in a match that had a tense finish. Good performance though by Ant who achieved his best T9B finish to date of a Quarter Finalist. Jonathan Vaughan was involved in the most matches on the day and made the prize money on both sides of the draw. Jonny nicknamed JV plays at the Terry Griffiths Match Room in Llanelli, Wales and he spoke of the support the club gives him, recently adding a 9ball table to the club for him, so I guess this was great news for Jonny and bad news for all challengers as his game will now be fully practiced! Vaughan competed in 10 matches during yesterday's event almost back to back as he remained in the tournament for the longest on both sides but was stopped on his march towards the Jackpot by Richard Main. JV and Main had to play each other twice in succession with Vaughan winning the first match 7v2 and Main winning the second 7v5. Jonathan after this defeat kept his composure to make sure he reached the overall Final after wins against a talented new player to T9B from Leicester Ashik Nathwani 7-3 and he then ended the Leicester interest in this event by beating Aslam Abubaker 7v4 in the Semi Final but who would Vaughan come up against in the Final? The answer to that question was Sunny Garib, as reported earlier Sunny started his event off with a defeat but he soon put that defeat well and truly behind him beating experienced Mark Hughes 7v3. This result was followed by a good 7v3 victory over local league player Liam Wilson, Sunny was advancing through the draw in double quick time as is eliminated Ashik Nathwani 7v4. Billy Brown was up next for a now in form Sunny Garib, this match went all the way to the hill before the hotshot Garib secured his place in the Semi Final and a potential tricky match against Rich Main. Sunny was making the most of the few short breaks he had between games by keeping his arm going on one of the available practice tables and it showed as he defeated Main by a scoreline of 7v4. There we have it the Final was to be contested by Jonathan Vaughan of Neath and Sunny Garib from Kingston. Before the match began T9B founder Phil Wildman interviewed both players (video is available of the Final) both seemed confident but looked tired as there had been so much action throughout the day. Sunny played a near perfect Final making no real errors and potting balls off the lampshades, he ended up a convincing 7v4 Winner. Sunny after the match seemed very pleased with his victory and I expect Sunny Garib is a name that will be heard a lot in the future. The beautiful unique T9B Glass trophy was awarded to Sunny as he was announced Total9ball Rookie Rampage Winner 2013.

St Albans Hurricane Room as always were excellent hosts providing us with some of the best club facilities available in the country. Nicole Hansen ran yet another smooth competition for the players using a new operating system which did seem to speed the event up a little. Thanks to our sponsors Kamui and Ulitmate Breakmasters. Kamui are forever sponsoring events for this sport we all love so it's important that we all promote them in what ever ways we can as a thanks for their generous sponsorship. Players buying Kamui tips are given £5 off their next entry fee and it was great to see players taking advantage of this great offer. A big thanks to Dave Knight for attending again and taking some brilliant photos.

The next Total9ball event will be held in Wealdstone, London on the 16th March this is event 2 of the National Series and is an event not to be missed so be sure to get your name on the entry list asap.

Video is still being improved/processed by YouTube, it will look better later.
