Glasgow wonderkid Jayson Shaw won his second Carlsberg Scottish Open 9 Ball title with a brilliant 11-6 victory over Stirling's Ian McIntosh to take the title and the £750 first prize.

"Read More..." for the details.

A small but extremely talented group of 36 players arrived from various parts of Britain and Ireland at Styx, Kirkcaldy for this year's Scottish Open and the battle for part of the £2,000 prize fund. The format for the event saw all the players entered into the Double Elimination draw and play until 16 players remained - 8 players in the Winners' Bracket and 8 in the Losers' Bracket.

These 16 players would then play in a Single Elimination format to find the winner. The tournament also saw live coverage streamed over the internet by www.maxleepool.com. Links to footage of some of the matches can be found further on in this report.

The early matches saw the surprises coming in quickly with Ireland's Gareth Deegan sending Michael Valentine to the losers' bracket in their opening round match by 8 racks to 6. Snooker professional Mark Boyle, a player not known for his ability at the American Pool disciplines, tore his way through the draw to qualify for the last 16 with wins over reigning champion Stevie Capaldi (8-2) and SAPPA stalwart Tam Walkinshaw (8-4).

By the time Saturday evening arrived, only 16 players remained. They were:-

The stand out match of the round was the encounter between Scotland's Michael Valentine and Ireland's Paddy Mc Loughlin. This match, played on the live streaming table, was a tight affair that turned into a bit of a marathon. You can watch this match, in its entirety, by clicking here.

The stand out result from this round was Ryan Davie's win over Scott Ross. Davie, one of Scotland's top young 8 Ball players, was always on top in this match and was always quick to capitalise on the mistakes of his more experienced opponent.

Stevie Capaldi's run as reigning champion came to an end at the Quarter Final stage at the hands of Michael Valentine. The highlight match was that between former champion Pat Holtz and Mark Boyle. This was played on the live streaming table and can be watched by clicking here. Coverage of this match starts with Boyle leading Holtz 1-0.

The semi finals were a bit of a contrast with the Holtz-Shaw match being a very hard fought battle between the 2 former Scottish Open champions but it was the youngster who managed to get through to his second Scottish Open final. The other semi final produced, arguably, the shock of the tournament with Ian McIntosh getting the best of Michael Valentine for the first time in any tournament. McIntosh managed to play almost perfect pool during the first part of the match and was unable to miss an open shot, allowing himself to build up a substantial lead. Later on in the match, however, he started struggling and allowed Valentine to attempt a come back but, in the end, it was too little too late and the Stirling man won the match to qualify for his first Scottish Open final.

This year's Carlsberg Scottish Open Championship final was a clash of styles with McIntosh's steady, calculated style against Shaw's aggressive shot-making style. For McIntosh, it was his first Scottish Open final whereas Shaw was playing for his second Scottish Open title. McIntosh was not able to get fully into the match with Shaw always that step or 2 ahead in the race to 11 racks. It made for intriguing viewing and, as you would expect, this match was played on the live streaming table and is available to view by clicking here.

As ever, it was a great Championships and there are a number of people who need to be thanked:-
To all the players who travelled from far and wide
To Cameron Bowes, Andy Morris and Alan Maxwell for organising and running an excellent Scottish Championships
To Carlsberg for their continued support of the Scottish Open 9-Ball Championships
To Maxlee Pool for the live streaming of the latter stages of the tournament.
And finally, to Mario and all his staff at Styx, Kirkcaldy, for being such great hosts and putting up with us all during the weekend. As ever, they went above and beyond the call of duty and their hard work is always much appreciated by all the players.
We look forward to seeing you all in 2011.
