I know what you mean, but actually, you're wrong on two completely separate levels with that statement.
Firstly - Taken literally, pool chalk ISN'T chalk at all... There's no chalk in pool chalk any more - it's a compound of fine abrasives!
Secondly, Kamui 0.98 is quite unlike other pool chalks - much softer, more like makeup than chalk.
Try playing with wet chalk, or really bad cheap chalk... You'll soon appreciate the difference between that and decent chalk. The try Kamui 0.98 - and you'll feel another leap in quality.

I'm not disputing the quality of the Kamui chalk but the point is this stuff is FIFTY TIMES more expensive than a block of blue masters that works perfectly well. Darren used a block of 0.98 on his table in Barnsley and I tried some - it was so soft it left blotches all over the CB and all over the cloth, so maybe thats part of the reason for the new version but it's still too expensive to be considered a serious option IMO. The coverage on a phenolic tip was poor so maybe i will buy some 0.98 just for breaking off.
Kamui received a lot of complaints about 0.98 because players (American, obviously) felt chalking every couple of racks or so was bad for their pre shot routine, so Kamui developed 1.21, which is to be used more frequently, like a regular chalk.
I haven't tried 1.21 yet, but have some 0.98. It's good, but I've tired of the novelty value and have gone back to Blue Diamond, which is MUCH better than Masters. My pre shot routine doesn't include the chalking up process, it starts with the alignment of the shot and what follows so this particular aspect did not affect me at all. My cube of 1.21 lasts a full rack easily with just chalking up at the beginning, maybe it's actually 0.98 with 1.21 paper on it i don't know, but no way do i need to chalk up more than once per rack, if i do then the cue ball does get covered. Like i said in my original post maybe it's because i used it with a brand new Kamui SS Tip????

Over the last 7 years or so i have used a wide range of tips and although my favourite was Moori Medium i now feel Kamui SS is the best for me although i have only used it for around 5 hours. Much more control over the cue ball and very little effort needed to get maximum spin etc This may partly be down to the fact i used 1.21 for the first time also i don't know but i'm well happy with the results i'm getting.

Also the chalk went on the tip so thickly that you could indeed play a full rack without rechalking. But here is the problem... Unless you are a millionaire or very rich or very dumb or any of those you need to embrace the idea of not chalking your cue every shot and perhaps even only chalking it once per rack or maybe once more on those big screw shots. The problem here is if you are a touch / feel player. I am - I use a soft tip and put a lot of reliance on positional play. I tend to play screw shots in preference to follow where I can because I can feel the shot better - that's just me. The big problem is if you only chalk up once per rack the feel of the tip is VERY different on the first shot to how it is on the last. This is testament to how good the chalk is - you get a very soft hit when just chalked but then the tip sounds more pingy when it's in need of another rub. The only way to get a consistent feel from shot to shot is to chalk up before each shot and I'm afraid that's just not feasible at these prices. So I've gone back to good old Blue Master. What you didn't freeze it? Without freezing it you cant pour as much gravy on the rock!!!!!! I used to have a nice cue case but i now carry a cool box and ice pack to keep my chalk at its optimum -----------------

I'm so glad i didn't place mine in the freezer for safe keeping otherwise my investment would be ruined!!!!!!! lol
Kind of a strange recall, not sure we'll ever come across anything like this again.
I won't be buying Kamui 1.21 a (alpha) i'll just stick to the 1.21 and keep it away from the cold places in my house ie. the freezer lol

I agree Riggers the more shots you play the pingier the tip sounds and feels more solid a hit compared to only just chalking. I am very much a touch / feel player but felt i coped ok without chalking every shot, but i must admit i prefer the feel of the shot as the rack went on rather than once i had just chalked up.

What's the full story here? I can't find anything about a recall on other sites... What happens when it's been frozen? I had a spare cube in the shed during the winter, so it may be affected.

You'll also find this exact same information on the official Kamui Brand website, just so you know it's straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. If you bought your chalk from The Pro Shop and it's still in it's wrapper, just return it to me and I'll reimburse your postage, as well as give you a replacement as soon as the new "Alpha" version is available.
