Was just reading thru all the details on the predator 10 ball site and came across a very strange section.
It mentions the prize structure and says Spanish players will have 18% deducted in tax and ALL other players will have 24% deducted....
Surely this cannot be right?
If you go to Vegas and play in a poker tournament and me and an American national both win $10,000. He will have to pay tax on this and I won't as I am not part of the American tax system so not liable to pay taxes.
So how is this different in Spain. And with them being part of the EU how can they charge a UK national a different tax rate from a Spanish national?
This just seems a huge swizz to me.

Unfortunately this is the law in Spain. The organisers have to pay the tax on the prize money, there is no escaping that. They can either pay it themselves or make the winner pay it but at the end of the day the taxman will not be the loser. I think you will find that you would have to pay tax somehow on the $10,000 in Las Vegas. In the recent World 10 Ball Championship, if they ever pay the prizes, there will be deductions of approx 20% for tax + 5% for the WPA + 2-5 % for the BSCP. I remember Niels Feijen telling me that when he won the World Straight Pool Championship last year in the USA, he took home less than half the advertised prize money [ This message was edited by: malaguista on 2009-12-31 07:04 ]

I worded my original post incorrectly, I meant the US national will pay more tax than me.
How can I go to another country and pay MORE tax than a national of that country?
If I have to pay tax on winnings, then obviously I must get tax relief on entry fee, hotel fees and airfare as if I am being taxed like I am self employed then I must be able to claim expenses against my tax?

And how come when the Eurotour is in Malaga there is no deduction for tax other than the affiliation fee of 5%?

I no it does seem a little strange ! I was told that I could claim mine back but is wasn't worth the hassle as I only won $600
I no that players like Daz and Karl had there own tax code in the states when the ipt was on, meaning they paid a standed tax fee rather than the high rate tax

It just seems ridiculous that you would pay 400 euros to enter. Pay between 100-200 Euros for the hotel, around £100 for your flight.
Get to the last 32 which is where you would usually break even on the eurotour and they would hit you with 675 euros minus 24% which is 513 euros.
At the very least your entry fee cost should be tax free, so you should only pay tax on 275 euros as this is ALL your winning to be taxed on.
Which means you would 609 Euros instead.
Would be very easy for the organisers to arrange, they merely need to refund the winners their entry fee and then pay out the balance as winnings then this would be all you would pay tax on.

Maxi, I understand that you think it would be easy for organisers to do as you say but in reality it is not at all easy. Tax authorities like to know what goes into and out of a business bank account and this is where the problem lies. The only way round it would be as follows; I am an organiser, you give me your entry fees in cash and I keep them under the bed for a couple of weeks, then when the time comes to pay out, I use the cash. Of course I would have to hope that I don´t get robbed in the meantime or I don´t get tempted to take a foreign holiday. I think we must have someone on this forum who knows about taxes, perhaps they could comment.

I accept what you are saying but purely from a tax point of view I can't pay 400 euros to enter something and be paid out 675 and taxed on that full amount. It means I am paying tax on my own money. If I walk into a casino in Spain and put 5,000 euros on red at roulette do I need to pay 24% tax on 10,000 euros?

Does anybody have any contact details for any of the organisers of this event. I have sent several emails enquiring about paying for an entry and had absolutely no reply.
On their website and on the flyer there are absolutely no contact numbers.

Haha, Bucky, I had already started typing that too, but then laughed like a drain when I had finished typing and read the bottom line of Peter's post! No Mark Gray? If I was his sponsor I'd want him in this one! [ This message was edited by: BigDave on 2010-01-03 10:22 ]
