CSI Launches US Open 8-Ball Championship at the Rio in July 2013

CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (January 4, 2013) – CueSports International (CSI) is expanding the roster of professional tournaments at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas in July 2013. CSI will introduce the inaugural US Open 8-Ball Championship on July 23-27, sponsored by the American Cuemakers Association.

The new event will follow the well established pro events produced by CSI – the 14th US Open One Pocket Championship and the 5th US Open 10-Ball Championship. As with the 10-Ball event, the US Open 8-Ball Championship will be $25,000 added and a 2013 Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Points Event. The two BCA Point Events will be held back to back under one roof, greatly assisting US players in their quest for pro points while keeping travel expenses lower.

The combination of CSI US Open events in July is truly unique. In the course of 10 days top US and international players will have the opportunity to play in three professional level tournaments in three separate disciplines with a combined total of $60,000 added. The US Open 8-Ball and US Open 10-Ball fields will be limited to 96 players and the US Open One Pocket will sport a 64 player field.

In 2010 CSI, which is also the parent company of the BCA Pool League (BCAPL) and USA Pool League (USAPL), launched the US Open 10-Ball Championship in conjunction with the BCAPL National Championships, known as “The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World!” CSI added HD live video streaming by TheActionReport.com (TAR) and free stream feeds to each of the host hotel rooms. In 2011, CSI added the US Open One Pocket Championship and the 14.1 High Run Challenge. For 2013, “The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World!” will present three new events: the US Open 8-Ball Championship by CSI, the 2013 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship, and the 25th Annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships, which is produced by the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF).

New also in 2013 – spectator general admission to all three CSI pro events, the world artistic pool and junior national competitions, and the 14.1 challenge will be FREE to the players competing in the BCAPL & USAPL National Championships (July 17-27, 2013) also being held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

Selby Wins Again In Munich

Mark Selby continued his superb recent form by winning the Arcaden Munich Open in Germany, part of the Betfair European Tour series.

Selby captured the UK Championship title last month and regained the world number one ranking, and lived up to that billing by making it back-to-back titles in Munich with a 4-3 defeat of Graeme Dott in the final.

Leicester’s 29-year-old Selby also finished top of the Players Tour Championship Order of Merit, by winning the last of ten short PTC events staged around Europe and the UK this season.

Selby led the final 2-1, then Larkhall’s Dott, who was seeking his first professional title since 2007, made a break of 106 to win the fourth frame then took a scrappy 38-minute fifth to lead 3-2. But Selby rose to the occasion with breaks of 72 and 90 to win the last two frames and secure the 12,000 Euro top prize, plus 2,000 ranking points.

The line-up for the 32 players to go through to the Grand Finals at the National University of Ireland in Galway in March will be confirmed shortly, and tickets will be on sale this month.

World Snooker Deal Extended

The BBC will continue to broadcast snooker’s biggest domestic tournaments until at least 2017, extending the current agreement by three years.

The BBC will continue as host broadcaster of the World Championship, the UK Championship and the Masters until the end of the 2016/17 season, and there is also the option to continue with one further event after 2014.

The World Championship, UK Championship and the Masters will be given network coverage throughout the UK as well as broadcast via the BBC i-player.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: "This is wonderful news for the many millions of snooker fans throughout the UK who love watching the sport on the BBC. This season there are over 260 hours of coverage of snooker on the BBC which is a fantastic amount. And last year’s World Championship was watched by 28.5 million people which proves what a wide appeal there is for snooker.

“The World Championship, the UK Championship and the Masters are among the highlights of the sporting calendar so it’s terrific that they will remain on terrestrial television.

“Snooker has made huge progress in recent years and is growing rapidly as a worldwide sport. The BBC remains one of our most important partners and we look forward to many years working with them.”

World number one and UK Champion Mark Selby added: “Everyone’s first memories of snooker are watching the big events on the BBC so it’s great for the players and fans to know that those tournaments will remain on terrestrial TV for at least the next four years.”

BBC Big Screens To Show Betfair Masters

Snooker fans in London, Bristol and Portsmouth will be able to watch the Betfair Masters on BBC Big Screens next week.

The sport’s biggest invitation tournament will be shown on the Big Screens in Waltham Forest and Woolwich in London, and in city centres in Bristol and Portsmouth.

The Betfair Masters runs from January 13-20 at Alexandra Palace in London, with the likes of Judd Trump, John Higgins, Mark Selby and Neil Robertson battling for the £175,000 top prize.

A spokesman for World Snooker said: “We’re delighted with the continued coverage from the BBC’s Big Screens as it’s a fantastic way to raise awareness of our events. Hopefully people passing by the screens will stop to watch a couple of frames and get hooked on snooker!

"It's also a great chance for friends to get together to watch the snooker and create their own atmosphere in their home town."

Centuries Cash For Bluebell Wood

World Snooker and the WPBSA will together donate £250 for every century break made at the Betfair Masters to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The tournament features 16 of the world’s best players, including Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, John Higgins and Judd Trump, and they will be competing for the prestigious title from January 13-20 at Alexandra Palace in London.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We are aiming to raise over £100,000 for our official charity Bluebell Wood this year so we are delighted to be able to add to that total with cash for centuries at the Masters. I want to see all of the players going for big breaks to get that total as high as possible.”

WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson added: “Bluebell Wood is such a fantastic cause and we want to help in any way we can. The standard in snooker is so high these days and I’m sure we will see plenty of centuries flying in.”
