The Pressure RoomIt would actually be a good name for a pool hall - one with plenty of action like Riley's Victoria used to be, but actually it's the name of Rico Dik's band, and it's apparently a reference from a James Bond film, I think where Blofeld tells Oddjob to "take Mr. Bond to the pressure room" or something like that... Google would have the answer.
I drove to London to see them last week. They were playing at the legendary "Marquee Club"... Although this turned out to be a re-branded club right next door to Stringfellows... Obviously this NEW club (that has next to nothing to do with the original Marquee club) has bought the rights to the name and receives a fair bit of interest from it's namesake and is a worthwhile investment.
Actually, the club is really nice (a heck of a lot nicer and more sophisticated than the black pit that was the original club) and the staff are excellent, free entry for your intrepid reporter, and cut price drinks for the photographer too (hey, that's me and me!)
Here's the bit where YOU get a good laugh... I drove around for so long looking for an affordable parking space (Covent Garden at 8pm) that I actually missed the gig.
Gutted, although I did get to chat with the band as they took their now customary smoke break outside, after their set.
So... No photos this time! Sorry!
I went to Victoria afterwards, as I always do and watched Imran put his new cue through it paces, at first for a "score" against Steve Folan, then just practicing a few shots loaded with spin.
Imran says he can get more side from his new pride and joy, a lovely Mezz cue, "I can do a lot more with a deflecting shaft" is his latest mantra, "low defection shafts are great for accurate potting, but for working the cue-ball - give me a deflecting shaft", he said, and it seems to be a fact as he was spinning the white like a demon.
That's what they thought in the olden days, when one clever man had invented the idea of a leather tip they said that the cue-ball "acted as if possessed by the devil himself" because they had never seen the effects of spin before using the tails of their bare wood tipped mallets.
Anyway... That's enough for tonight!
