O’Sullivan – English Open Is Hot Ticket

Snooker ace Ronnie O’Sullivan is urging fans to come to next week’s new Coral English Open in Manchester for the chance to see the biggest names in the sport.

The world ranking tournament, the first of the new Home Nations series, runs from October 10 to 16 at Event City and will feature 128 players including O’Sullivan himself as well as Mark Selby, Judd Trump, Neil Robertson, John Higgins, Shaun Murphy, Jimmy White and many more.

And with eight tables in the arena for the first four days, fans can see several matches in each session, with tickets starting at just £10.

“It’s a hot ticket and I’d recommend anyone to go and watch it,” said five-time World Champion O’Sullivan in an interview arranged by Home Nations broadcaster Eurosport. “I remember the first time I went to see snooker live – it was James Wattana against Steve Davis. It was so different to watching it on TV. It was unbelievable to watch and it made me want to become part of it.

“There’s nothing like live sport and you won’t get any better than this event in Manchester because all of the top players will be there from round one.”

The Home Nations series will also comprise tournaments in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and any player who wins all four will bank a massive £1 million bonus.

“It’s a fantastic carrot to be dangled in front of us,” said O’Sullivan. “If anyone can win 28 consecutive matches in this format they deserve more than £1 million, that’s how hard it would be. But it’s great for snooker that there’s talk of that kind of money.”

Essex cueman O’Sullivan skipped the first four tournaments this season but is now building form having played in the Shanghai Masters and this week’s European Masters in Romania. The 40-year-old is currently ranked tenth in the world and does not believe he can get back to the top of the sport.

“I’m probably never going to be world number one again or be a major contender for the big tournaments, but I’ll just play snooker for the fun I get out of it,” he added. “My game is nowhere near where I’d like to be, but I’ll probably be playing in 12 or 13 events this season, there’s no need to panic.

“I’m happy with my career now. I’ve achieved more than I ever dreamt I would. I just want to have a nice life now. Working with Eurosport and other people has allowed me to branch out into different areas. If you’re young and snooker is all you have got, then you need to embrace it. I’ve been quite fortunate to come to the end of my career and people want to do stuff with me, I’ve tested the waters and quite enjoyed it.”

O’Sullivan will play his first round match against Jimmy Robertson on Tuesday October 11 and seats are still available for that day. There are 32 matches in all on Tuesday including Judd Trump v Ken Doherty and Mark Selby v Gary Wilson.

There are also 32 matches on Monday including Jimmy White v Zhou Yuelong and Stuart Bingham v Robert Milkins.

Selby Determined To Stay On Top

Mark Selby believes he has produced the most consistent form of his career in 2016 and has no intention of letting slip snooker’s world number one spot.

Over the past eight months Selby has won 39 out of 46 matches on the pro tour, winning the Gdynia Open and Paul Hunter Classic in that period as well as his second World Championship crown.

And he goes into next week's Coral English Open in Manchester full of confidence as he looks to extend a 20-month spell at the top of the rankings.

"I have been more consistent than at any other time in my career this year," said the 33-year-old, who is through to the semi-finals of the European Masters in Romania after a 4-0 win over Alfie Burden today. "I went through a phase of getting to finals and not converting them into wins. The difference this year is that I have been winning finals, other than the one against Ding Junhui in Shanghai last month.

"When I kept losing finals it really hurt and made me more hungry to work harder to get that extra edge. I have not changed anything technically, I have just become more determined. And I know that when I'm not on my A game I can still scrap out wins and that's a great thing to have in my locker.

"There are always young guns coming through trying to knock me off the perch, like Kyren Wilson and Anthony McGill who have won tournaments. I have will to win and keep going, rather than getting complacent."

The Coral English Open runs from October 10-16 at Event City in Manchester and it is the first of the new Home Nations series of tournaments. Leicester's Selby is up against Gary Wilson in his opening match on Tuesday.

The tournament will be televised live by Eurosport and Quest. Home Nations events will follow in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, with any player winning all four to receive a massive £1 million bonus.

Tickets for next week are still available and start at just £10.

Snooker: Euro Star Trump Up To Third

Judd Trump has climbed to third place in snooker’s world rankings after his victory at the European Masters.

The Juddernaut beat Ronnie O’Sullivan 9-8 in a sensational final in Bucharest on Sunday night to land the 75,000 Euro top prize, which gives him a rise of one place in the official rankings.

O’Sullivan was denied a 29th ranking title but still moves up one spot on the official list to ninth.

Mark Selby reached the semi-finals in Romania and retains his stronghold on the world number one position, which he has held for 20 consecutive months.

The players in the top 16 remain the same. There are four ranking events to go until the vital cut off point for The Dafabet Masters, with only the top 16 seeds to earn a place at Alexandra Palace.

Trump leaps 14 places to fourth on the separate one-year list, which determines who will qualify for the World Grand Prix and Players Championship. The top 32 will make it to the World Grand Prix in Preston in February, then the top 16 will earn spots at the Players Championship in Llandudno in March. So every pound earned in ranking events over the coming months is vital.

O’Sullivan was previously 55th on the one-year list but now jumps to tenth.

As its stands there are eight players inside the top 32 of the one-year list who are outside the top 32 of the two-year list. And five players inside the top 16 of the one-year list who are outside the top 16 of the two-year list.

Big names like Mark Allen, Ricky Walden and Marco Fu have plenty of catching up to do to make sure of places at the World Grand Prix and Players Championship.

English Open title sponsor Coral will donate £50 to Jessie May Children’s Hospice At Home for every century break made during the seven days of the tournament.

The Coral English Open runs until Sunday at Event City in Manchester, with 128 of the world’s best players competing for the title.

Jessie May Children’s Hospice at Home, based in Bristol, has become World Snooker’s official charity partner for the 2016/17 season. Jessie May provides a hospice at home service for terminally ill children, offering care to families in the Bristol area.

OB Cues & DigiCue join the Eurotour

The EPBF announced today that OB Cues & DigiCue will be part of the EPBF/IBPF 2017 pool season, featuring at all of their events. Texas based OB Cues, renowned for their excellent performance and craftsmanship in the cue industry since 2005 have come up with a new electronic training device for all cue sports, the “DigiCue”

To North American Professional Pool Players

In regards to WPA Player Licenses, the intent of the WPA, and its General Assembly, including the Billiard Congress of America, is to protect organizers and players alike, who support professional hosted events and a player and promoter code of ethics. All members (worldwide) of the WPA General Assembly worked together to develop a WPA Player License for this purpose.

To our knowledge, since its inception the WPA Player License has been implemented void of negative player consequences. Many top American players have already completed the WPA Player License. Additionally, if at any time, a player finds the license too restrictive or if he/she feels they are being unfairly treated they may cancel their WPA Player License effective immediately.

With that said, it has become clear this week that there are many North American players unaware of the WPA Player License.

Given this situation, the Billiard Congress of America will pay the 2016 annual $15 WPA Player License fee for all North American players competing in the 2016 US Open. The Association will also remit $15 to any North American player who has previously completed the WPA Player License process.

For those competing in the 2016 US Open, please complete the Player License Form and provide the requested passport size headshot photo to the WPA at events@wpapool.com prior to the US Open. The BCA will then remit the $15 to the WPA on behalf of all North American players in the 2016 US Open who complete the process.

Liang Leaps To 12th And Gains Coventry Spot

Liang Wenbo has jumped to 12th in the world after winning his first ranking title at the Coral English Open.

China’s Liang beat Judd Trump 9-6 in the final in Manchester to take the £70,000 top prize, and climbs eight spots from 20th.

He also earned a place at the Champion of Champions event to take place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry from November 7 to 12 and he will meet Mark Selby in the first round.

Trump remains third in the rankings, behind Stuart Bingham and Selby.

Chris Wakelin reached the quarter-finals of a ranking event for the second time in his career and he’s up three places to 67th. Anthony Hamilton got to the same stage for the first time in three years and he flies up 28 places to 79th.

Liang is into the top 16 at the expense of Kyren Wilson. There are three ranking events to go until the vital cut off point for The Dafabet Masters, with only the top 16 seeds to earn a place at Alexandra Palace.

Liang is up 18 places to fourth on the separate one-year list, which determines who will qualify for the World Grand Prix and Players Championship. The top 32 will make it to the World Grand Prix in Preston in February, then the top 16 will earn spots at the Players Championship in Llandudno in March. So every pound earned in ranking events over the coming months is vital.

Trump climbs two spots to fourth. Hamilton soars from 93rd to 44th while Wakelin is up from 95th to 47th.

F66.com Sponsor Snooker's German Masters

This season’s German Masters world ranking event will be sponsored by F66.com for the first time.

The F66.com German Masters will run from February 1st to 5th, 2017, at the iconic Tempodrom venue in Berlin.

The event has become one of the most popular on the global tour since it was first staged in 2011. The stunning Tempodrom arena holds 2,500 fans and produces an incredible atmosphere, renowned on the snooker circuit.

Martin Gould won the title last season by beating Luca Brecel in the final, while former winners include Ronnie O’Sullivan, Ding Junhui and Mark Selby.

The event will receive extensive live television coverage from Eurosport and throughout the Middle East and Asia.

The initial qualifying rounds will be staged from December 6 to 9 in Barnsley, with 128 players each needing to win two matches to make it to the final stages in Berlin, to compete for the trophy and a top prize of 80,000 Euros.

The World Pool-Billiard Association is delighted to announce that a decision has been made to sanction the 2017 World 8-Ball Series that will be promoted and organised by leading professional player and former world champion, Darren Appleton. The series will consist of three preliminary tournaments and a final event. To qualify for the final a player must have competed in a minimum of one of the preliminary events, otherwise be required to pay a higher entry fee. Each round will feature two tournaments, a main event and a challenge event.

WPA President Ian Anderson said that the WPA were pleased to be associated with Darren and his series of events. This is a great initiative shown by a leading player trying to promote the sport through some extra effort. Promoting tournaments is often a thankless task, but Darren has been around long enough to be aware of this. “I’m confident that Darren will get tremendous support as his events have a great format and he is most highly respected by his peers. If having the WPA involved to help increase the appeal of these events, then we’re happy to do so”, Anderson said. The WPA will award ranking points equivalent to WPA member events for each of the main rounds.

Dates for the events are;

2.    April 4 - 7
3.    July 12 - 15
4.    September 27 - October 1

Together with my partner, Manny Stamatakis of Steinway Billiards in New York, and the entire team, we are delighted the WPA are supporting our efforts for the world series. We believe that this series will help grow the sport, especially in the USA where pool has struggled in recent years at a pro level. Hopefully the world series will revive pool at the professional level in the US and help grow the game worldwide. Working together with the WPA is really the stamp of approval we needed as it will help and encourage players from all over the world to compete in our series, as those extra ranking points they will earn can make all the difference to players.

It’s our goal to build the series and the sport for years to come, and I’m sure we can accomplish this. I must say after many meetings and observations over the years of how other sports achieve success, it’s vital that we all work together to help pool, and the WPA is the benchmark and backbone of our sport.
