FILIPINO star Carlo "The Black Tiger" Biado seeks revenge against Taiwanese ace Chang Jung-lin when the Philippine Bigtime Billiards (PBB) Face Off Series resume tonight (Friday), 9 pm at the Pagcor Airport Casino in Parañaque City.

Biado's Bugsy Promotions stablemate Roberto "Superman" Gomez was yielded to Chang, 7-9, in the last PBB Face Off Series.

" Igaganti ko si (Roberto) Gomez kay Chang," said the La Union native Biado, currently World No.16.

"Titiyakin ko na hindi tayo mapapahiya pa dahil talagang pinaghandaan ko ang laban na ito," added the 2011 BSCP National Pool Championships ruler Biado, a former golf caddie.

The German Masters, a world ranking event which enjoyed spectacular success when it was introduced last season, will be sponsored by PartyPoker.net in February.

Chang beats Gomez in PBB Face-Off

TAIWANESE Chang Jung-lin downed Filipino Roberto Gomez, 9-7, to win the Philippine Bigtime Billiards Face-Off Series last Saturday at the Pagcor Airport Casino in Parañaque City.

Gomez, known internationally as Superman, raced to a 2-0 and 3-1 lead before Chang took two straight racks to level the match.

The two were tied at 3, then at 6, in the 10-ball contest aired worldwide through the Internet before the Filipino got unlucky in the 13th rack.

Needing only to sink two balls to take the lead, Gomez bungled the nine, leaving Chang an easy way to go up, 7-6.

Gomez managed to level the match again at 7 but the Taiwanese took the last two racks for the win.

“My miss on the nine was the turning point because it was the first time Chang got the lead. Although I got another chance again, I started to miss some of the shots,” said Gomez, who made history as the first qualifier to make the World Pool Championships finals in 2007.

World Snooker Q School Returns Next May

World Snooker will once again be staging Q School in May, with a TWO YEAR TOUR CARD available for all players who qualify.

Q School will be open to everyone (subject to terms and conditions) and there will be 12 places available on the World Snooker Tour. All players who come through Q School will be given a TWO YEAR TOUR CARD which guarantees their place on the pro circuit for a minimum of 2012/13 and 2013/14.

It will be played at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield, starting on May 13, 2012, and there will be three separate events, with the semi-finalists from each to be given a Tour Card.

Entry into all three events is just £1,000, with those who qualify earning the chance to compete for millions of pounds in prize money on the main circuit, and take on the world’s best players. Prize money for the tour has gone up from £3.5million to over £6million within the past two years and is expected to go past £8million in the next year.

A new Q School ranking list will also be introduced, with players earning one point for every frame won. During the main tour season, should any of the tournament draws fall below a total entry of 96 (or 128 in 2013/14) then the field will be topped up to 96 or 128 with the highest ranked players from the Q-School list.

WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson said: "Q School was staged for the first time last year and we consider it the best and fairest way to give all players the chance to qualify for the tour. Rookies such as Sheffield's Adam Duffy and China's Li Yan came through the system, and both have since climbed quickly up the world rankings, so that shows what players can do if they have the talent and the dedication.

"Snooker is rapidly becoming a global sport, with more tournaments, more prize money and more players. We are increasing the tour from 96 to 128 players in season 2013-14, so the opportunities to qualify for the main tour have increased dramatically. With the two-year exemption and increase in numbers on the tour, Q School could not give players a better chance to get on to the circuit and climb the rankings.

“For anyone out there who believes they can be part of it and wants to give it their best shot - that's what Q School is all about. It’s opportunity for all – which is what all sports should be about."

Galway To Stage PTC Grand Finals

The Bailey Allen Hall in Galway, Ireland, will stage snooker's Players Tour Championship Grand Finals for the first time in March.

The tournament is the climax of the PTC Series, which has featured 12 short events staged in the UK and around Europe over the past six months. It is open to all professional and amateur snooker players, with the top 24 on the final Order of Merit to go through to the Grand Finals, which will run from March 14-18.

Top stars including Judd Trump, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Neil Robertson, Mark Selby and John Higgins have already secured their place in Galway. PTC12 Munich, the Arcaden Shopping Open, is played to a conclusion in Munich, Germany, from January 6-8, after which the full line-up of 24 players will be known.

In Galway, the players will be battling for ranking points as well as a total prize fund of £250,000, with a top prize of £70,000 up for grabs. The tournament will receive extensive television coverage from Eurosport.

A spokesman for World Snooker said: "Our players have been all around the UK and Europe already this season, to locations including Poland, Belgium and Germany, and it has been a fantastic experience to bring snooker to those locations, where the popularity of the sport is growing fast.

"Now all eyes turn to Galway for what is sure to be a thrilling conclusion to the series. We staged the Grand Finals in Dublin last season and it was very well supported. Manila, Philippines---TWO of the hottest Asian superstars from Chinese-Taipei are now a member of the Bugsy Promotions- a billiards stable of the country’s finest players owned by sports patron Ceferino "Perry" Mariano, startups to watch out in 2012.

Chang Jung-lin, World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) ranked no.7 and currently no.15 in the Player Money list with a total earning $56,400. He won the 2011 Beijing Open last April 27 to May 1 for $40,000 richer.

Two-time World Junior Champion Ko Pin-yi, WPA ranked no.17 and currently no.7 in the Player Money list with a total earning $87,500. His biggest triumphs this year by winning the Guinness World Series of Pool last July 11 to 17 in Jakarta, Indonesia for the top prize $41,000 and All Japan Championship last November 18 to 20 for the champion's purse $28,600.

“Chang and Ko both possesses the quality of future WPA world champion starting from personality, dedication and discipline. With proper training and motivation, both of them bound for glory in the sport of billiards,” said Mariano who formally announced the acquisition of Chang and Ko as a new member of Bugsy’s on Thursday at the Hermes Sports Bar in West Avenue, Quezon City.

“ We (Ko) are very honored to be a member of famous Bugsy Promotions. We will try our best to reach their expectations. Our ambition to become a world champion is nearing to reality with the support of Mr. and Mrs. Perry and Verna Mariano,” said Chang, through an interpreter, who rose to prominence by winning the Guinness Asian 9-Ball Tour Grand Final was held August 31 to September 2, 2007 at the Grand Hyatt Bali, Bali, Indonesia.

Chang and Ko, both 1-2 punch of Taiwan will be joining fellow Bugsy Promotions stalwart headed by World No.1 and World 8-ball champion Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo, 2011 World Ten-Ball semi-finalist Carlo "The Black Tiger" Biado, 2007 World Pool Finalists Roberto "Superman" Gomez, 2006 World Junior Quarter-finalist Renemar "Revo" David, Johann "Bubwit" Chua and John Vincent Vicedo.

AFTER a fruitful year, Lee Vann Corteza, has set his goal to a highest level, to joined the elite Filipino World Champion in the company of Efren "Bata" Reyes, Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan, Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo, Ronato "Volcano" Alcano and Rubilen "Bingkay" Amit.

"Target kong makopo ang WPA World crown (8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball) para makasama ko y'ung mga Filipino World Champion," said Corteza who is supported by Energen and Kopiko.

"Y'ung na lamang talaga ang kulang ni Van-Van, ang World Championships crown," added Christopher "Toper" Palses, head coach of the star-studded Negros Billiards Stable (NBS).

The two-time national open champion, who plays for the Negros Billiards Stable and JSY Sports of businessman Jonathan Sy, hopes to continue his winning run in 2012 when he competes in the Derby City Classic in Kentucky, USA in January, the World 8-Ball championship in Fujairah, UAE in February and the Japan Open in March.

This year, the Davao cue master who goes by the moniker “The Slayer” has beaten high caliber opponents including compatriot and World no.1 Dennis Orcollo to rack-up four major titlesin the last five months.

These include the 2011 Golden Break 9-Ball Asian Invitational Championship in Malaysia in August, the San Miguel Beer Oktoberfest 9-Ball Open Masters in October, the Philippine Bigtime Billiards Face-Off and the Manny Pacquiao International 10-ball Championships, both in December.

Corteza started playing pool in 1993 and has already won four gold medals and a silver medal at the Southeast Asian Games. In 2010, he won the US Open 10-Ball Championship, the greatestachievement of his career.

He considers Orcollo, German Ralf “The Kaiser” Souquet and Finnish Mika “The Ice Man” Immonen as his greatest opponents. The New York-based Immonen toppled Corteza for the World Ten Ball crown in 2009.

'BATA' REYES WEAVES MAGIC IN WINNING PBB FACE OFF SERIES; POCKETS $5,000

Philippine billiards icon Efren “Bata" Reyes conjured up some old-fashioned magic to win the Philippine Bigtime Billiards (PBB) Face Off Series late Friday (December 30, 2011) at the Pagcor Airport Casino in Parañaque City.

The 57-year-old Reyes defeated Wu Jia Qiang (formerly Wu Chia-ching from Chinese-Taipei), 9-6.

A 2005 WPA World 9-Ball Champion and 2005 WPA World 8-Ball Champion, Wu Chia-ching is now playing for mainland China and carrying a new name Wu Jia Qing. Wu who goes by the moniker "Little Genius from Taishan" is schedule to celebrate his 23rd birthday on February 9, 2012.

“Luck played a part in my victory. Wu is a very tough opponent and I really had a hard time beating him,” said the 1999 WPA World 9-ball Champion and 2004 WPA World 8-Ball Champion Reyes, playing under the banner of top player of sportsman/businessman Aristeo "Putch" Puyat, the acknowledged Godfather of Philippine billiard.

It was a sweet revenge for the Angeles City, Pampanga cue master Reyes, because Wu beat him in their quarter-final encounter of 11th Predator International 10-Ball Championship last September held at the Robinsons Galleria Mall in Ortigas.

“I hope to play with him again as it’s really exciting going up against one of the world’s best cue artists.” he added.

The win was worth $5,000 for Reyes while Wu settled for $2,500 in this race-to-9, winner's break format, jointly organized by the Mega Sports World and BRKHRD Corp and aired live over Solar Sports, Sky Channel 70 and Destiny Channel 34, and also aired worldwide through the Internet, live streaming at www.megasportsworld.com and www.philippinebigtimebilliards.com.

The PBB Face Off is a joint undertaking of Mega Sports World and BRKHRD Corp., and organized in cooperation with Airport Casino Filipino, Crown Sound System Sakura Amplifiers and Home Theater Systems, Malungai Life Oil, Diamond Billiard table, Hermes Sports Bar, I-Bar, Golden Leaf Restaurant, Bugsy Promotions, Mandarin Sky Sea Food Restaurant, Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) with The Philippine Star as official media partner.

Among the Filipino stars who have played in the PBB Face off series are Carlo "The Black Tiger" Biado, Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo, Ronato "Volcano" Alcano, Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Lee Vann "The Slayer" Corteza and Roberto "Superman" Gomez.

The PBB Face Off will resume on February 18, 2012 with a new format. The organizing committee lined up a match pitting Philippines versus The Rest of Asia, Asia versus Europe and East versus West.
