Day 2 for North America at WPA World Junior Championships
Nick Evans UndefeatedDecember 10, 2013 (Englewood, CO): Day two concluded at the 22nd Annual WPA World Junior & Wheelchair 9-Ball Championships at the Gold Reef City Theme Park Hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa. It’s been a rough start for the North American juniors as many of them have eliminated one another in early rounds. With only 16 players remaining in the boys division, Tyler Styer, Sergio Rivas, and Brendan Crockett are set to pair off on the one-loss side, while Nick Evans from St. Peters, Missouri remains the final team member still undefeated. On the girls side, an unfortunately match-up between Maine’s Taylor Reynolds and Minnesota’s April Larson eliminated the 13-year-old, leaving Reynolds and Canada’s Kayla Roloson the two remaining girls in the final eight, both with one-loss. Canadian players David Moyer and Charles Guimont, along with U.S. players Joey Bourgeois, Jr. and April Larson have thus far been eliminated. Matches resume tomorrow. To view the complete player profiles for the U.S. players, visit billiardeducation.org. Online brackets and live streaming for this event can be found at cuesportfever.com. The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) was formed in 1993 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity committed to promoting a lifelong love of pool and building the next generation of players through youth programs and academic scholarships. The BEF also produces the annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships and qualifies young players each year for the WPA World Junior Championships.

Selby Targeting Fourth Masters CrownThe world's best snooker players will be at Alexandra Palace in North London in January, and several sessions are selling out fast. Tickets are the perfect Christmas present for anyone who loves live sport so book them NOW while they are still available. Snooker's most prestigious invitation tournament runs from January 12 to 19 and features the elite 16 players including World Champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, world number one Neil Robertson, defending champion Mark Selby plus Judd Trump, John Higgins, Mark Allen, Shaun Murphy, Ding Junhui and many more. Tickets start at just £10, fantastic value for money, and there are also some amazing VIP and corporate hospitality packages available. To book call 0871 620 7052 (calls cost 10p per minute, plus network extras) or visit www.worldsnooker.com/tickets Selby won the title for the third time last year by beating Robertson 10-6 in the final, and the Leicester man dreams of defending the crown and taking the £200,000 top prize. Steve Davis, Cliff Thorburn and Paul Hunter all won it three times while only Stephen Hendry (six) and Ronnie O'Sullivan (four) have surpassed that total. "To defend the title and join Ronnie on four titles would be unbelievable," said Selby, who plays in the opening match of the tournament on Sunday January 12. "The Masters makes you feel special because it's only the best 16 players so you know that every match is going to be against another top player, and you will have to be at your best to win. And if you do win the title you know you've really earned it because you've beaten the best. "I was gutted to lose to Neil Robertson in the UK Championship final last week but winning the Masters again would be the perfect way to bounce back from that. Ally Pally is brilliant for snooker, it really works as a venue and the atmosphere is fantastic." Here's the match schedule for the first round: Sunday January 12 1pm Mark Selby v Mark Davis 7pm Stuart Bingham v John Higgins Monday January 13 1pm Judd Trump v Marco Fu 7pm Stephen Maguire v Joe Perry Tuesday January 14 1pm Ding Junhui v Shaun Murphy 7pm Ronnie O'Sullivan v Robert Milkins Wednesday January 15 1pm Neil Robertson v Mark Allen 7pm Barry Hawkins v Ricky Walden

William Hill Donate To Bluebell Wood Thanks To Snooker CenturiesWilliam Hill, title sponsor of snooker’s williamhill.com UK Championship, have made a donation of £10,880 to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in Sheffield. World number one Neil Robertson, who won the tournament by beating Mark Selby in the final, visited the hospice to present the cheque and meet children. Throughout the 13 days of the williamhill.com UK Championship in York, a donation of £128 was made for every century break made by any of the 128 players competing in the tournament. There were 85 centuries so the total came to £10,880. William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said: "The players did fantastically well over the tournament to rack up so many centuries during the UK Championship and as a result, a wonderful cause like Bluebell Wood can benefit." Julie Hampson, Corporate Fundraiser at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice said: “It was fabulous to have Neil Robertson visit us after his recent win at the UK Championship and present us with a cheque for such a staggering amount from the century breaks sponsored by William Hill. “The support we’ve received from World Snooker and William Hill for the last two years is incredible and means we are able to offer our support to more local children with a shortened life expectancy and their families.” Robertson added: “It’s a real eye-opener to come to Bluebell Wood and see how much hard work they do to help children and their families. It’s a fantastic donation from William Hill and great that snooker can do what it can to help.” Bluebell Wood is World Snooker’s official charity for the 2013/14 season. The hospice in North Anston offers care and support to children and young people with a shortened life expectancy, both in their own homes and at the hospice. It provides support to children and their families throughout South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. To find out more about Bluebell Wood and to make a donation visit www.bluebellwood.org Neil Robertson and Julie Hampson with two year old Callum Edwards

Orcollo wins Myanmar Southeast Asian Games 10-ball eventby Marlon Bernardino MANILA, Philippines – Filipino ace Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo nabbed the gold medal at the Men's 10 Ball competition of the 27th Southeast Asian Games-Myanmar 2013 at the Wunna Theikdi Billiards Hall in Naypyitaw, Myanmar. Orcollo won the next three racks to beat fellow Bugsy International Promotions stablemate Carlo "The Black Tiger" Biado to scored a come-from-behind 9-7 victory on Wednesday to pocketed the men’s 10-ball singles title, ending the drought in billiards. The former fisherman from Bislig, Surigao del Sur Orcollo, earlier beat Brunei’s Ahmad Taufiq Murni, 9-5; Nitiwat Kanjanasri of Thailand, 9-3; and Vietnam’s Anh Tuan Nguyen, 9-4, to arrange an all-Filipino final. Biado, on the other hand, subdued Riyan Setiawan of Indonesia, 9-5; Keng Kwang Chan of Singapore, 9-4; and Thanh Kien Dang of Vietnam, 9-3.Both players have been supported by Bugsy Promotions of Perry and Verna Mariano. The gold was the first for the Philippine Billiards team after they stumbled in Mens and Women's 9 Ball and in One Cushion Billiards. Meanwhile, Rubilen "Bingkay" Amit and Iris "Fighter" Ranola will attempt to go for gold again in the Women's 10 Ball competition on Thursday. Amit, the reigning world 10 Ball champ, won silver in 9 Ball while Ranola, who lost her father to cancer on the day she flew to Myanmar, is trying to put aside her personal grief in the hopes of bringing joy to the nation.

Gould Craves Support Of Blackpool CrowdMartin Gould insists that earning the support of the Blackpool crowd is the key to success in the 888casino Snooker Shoot-Out as he looks ahead to the defence of his title next month. Londoner Gould took the £32,000 top prize in the tournament at the Tower Circus Arena last season, beating Mark Allen in the final. The Shoot-Out is a one-frame knockout event starring 64 players and featuring ten minute frames and a shot clock. It runs on the weekend of January 24-26 and will feature top stars including Mark Selby, John Higgins, Shaun Murphy, Steve Davis and Jimmy White. Gould said: “The atmosphere is always brilliant and the crowd get involved much more than they do at other snooker events. I’ll be sending out messages on Twitter and Facebook before the tournament to try to get them behind me. “Last year, on the Saturday night everyone was cheering my name non-stop, it was amazing. There are certain points in the match where you need the support of the crowd because it helps you flow on the table and allows you to build momentum. I imagine if the crowd turns against you then you just want to get out of the arena. Luckily they have always supported me, maybe because I’m one of the nice guys and I get on with the fans.” Gould gets the tournament underway on Friday January 24 at 6pm, in the opening match against China’s Zhang Anda. Selby, Ali Carter, Barry Hawkins and ‘Whirlwind’ White are also among those who play on the first night. But Gould admits he will have to improve his current form to give himself a chance to retain the title. “I have lost a lot of close matches so far this season, and a lot of deciding frames,” said the 32-year-old. “Obviously at the Shoot-Out every match is a deciding frame so I’ll need to start winning them because I would love to pick up that trophy again. Winning it last year was definitely one of the best moments of my career so far. “I’ve got a few weeks off now over Christmas and from early January I’ll be practising hard, aiming to be ready for Blackpool.” Tickets for the Sky televised tournament are on sale now and start at just £16 for some fabulous snooker fun! Visit www.worldsnooker.com/tickets or call 0871 620 7052 (calls cost 10p per minute, plus network extras). For the full draw and format see www.worldsnooker.com

Tennis Brings Diverse American Communities Together: McGee & Muniz Win Typhoon Haiyan Tennis OpenStory by Oliver Lee Photographs by Gino A. Fiestan Multiculturalism at its finest as players from different ethnic communities came together for a day of competition and camaraderie to raise money and awareness for the people of the Philippines Orlando, Florida- Americans from multiple races came out for an all day affair to help it's faraway neighbors in the Philippines. The city of Orlando played host to the Typhoon Haiyan Tennis Tournament, which raised money and awareness for the natural disasters caused by the infamous, record breaking Typhoon Haiyan. The event was organized by international sports production company Dragon Promotions and sponsored by RealRealCool.com with Commissioner Daisy W. Lynum of Orlando District. The event took place on the beautiful clay courts of the Orlando Tennis Centre. "I was really thrilled at the turnout we had in such a short period of time. So many diverse communities came to play and help, which just shows Orlando is a symbol of multiculturalism. I'm really proud of my city and thankful for the bond of tennis. Plus, you can't beat the weather here in December!", said Charlie Williams, Executive Producer of Dragon Promotions. The Korean born Williams is a 16 year resident of Orlando. "Our goal was not just to raise money, but keep awareness to the rest of the world that the Philippines still needs our help. To my knowledge, this was the only sports benefit in Orlando for Typhoon Haiyan. And perhaps the only tennis benefit event for the Philippines in the United States", said Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions. A combination of word of mouth and a massive social media push filled the tennis field up quickly. Impressively, players came representing several American communities with Koreans, Vietnamese, Hispanic, South Americans, African Americans, Anglo Americans and Filipinos. Cash and prizes were awarded to the top finishers. "I am very pleased to have my district involved with Dragon Promotions in this great charity event for the Philippines. The Typhoon Haiyan was a terrible disaster, but it's great to see local businesses and the people of Orlando come together to show support for a foreign nation through the spirit of sports", said Commissioner Daisy W. Lynum of Orlando District 5. The tournament itself had intense competitive play with numerous close matches that yielded exciting play. Avalon Park's Aaron Pobocik and Dan Wiernik went undefeated in their division until they met West Orlando's Vic Augustine and Nestor Alvarez in the quarter finals. Down 2-7, Alvarez/Augustine made a tremendous comeback to win 9-7. But they had to withdraw in their semi-final match from fatigue to the only team that had beaten them before, which was Eastwood's Glenn Montenegro and Omar Rivera. On the top bracket, Vietnamese wizards James Nguyen and Hung Do shutout their first two opponents 6-0,6-0. They then re-matched with Puerto Rican duo Carlos Galindez and Omar Ammouni in the quarter-finals in a well fought match with Nguyen/Do prevailing 8-6. The teenage pairing of Tayjhon McGee and Gabriel Muniz edged out Quang Bui/Quynh Van 7-5 and the youngsters won a closer than it looked 8-4 quarter-finals win over former Timbercreek High #1 Michael Vo and Chris Ngo, a former national junior USTA finalist. In the division finals, the fans were treated to a show as McGee/Muniz played a fencing back and forth match with the crafty Nguyen/Do team, leading on their serve throughout the match. In the 15th game,Nguyen/Do broke their serve and forced a tiebreak. At the 8-8 tiebreak game, the fresher legs of McGee/Muniz edged out Nguyen/Do 7-4. The finals pitted the two division winners of McGee/Muniz of North Orlando versus East Orlando's Montenegro/Rivera. Both teams were undefeated. McGee/Muniz seemed to be the overwhelming favorite as they won the tougher division and they had youth on their side with their combined ages of 33 years versus the 75 years of Montenegro/Rivera. True to the predictions, the teenagers used their speed, Muniz's powerful serves and McGee's dynamic forehands to rattle off the first 3 game wins in a row, and it seemed like it would be a short finals. But then Montenegro (originally from Dumaguete City, Philippines) and Rivera ( originally from Puerto Rico) fought back with heart and determination to evolve the match into an exciting finals! With the cheers of the crowd behind them, the older team made it to 7 games forcing the match to be extended to a race to 9 games win by two. But the battled hardened McGee/Muniz held their nerves together and edged out the East Orlando veterans to win 9-7 and clinch the championship. "I like chicken", said Tayjhon McGee in the closing ceremony champions speech to some laughter when asked how he felt about the win. The 15 year old McGee is one of the nation's top junior players and will be enrolling full time to a Florida tennis academy in March to pursue a professional career. "I was surprised at how good they (Montegro/Rivera) played. I wasn't expecting that and it became a really close match. Now we get to celebrate with some Seito Sushi!", said Gabriel Muniz. Gabriel is currently 18 years old and represents West Orange High School as their #1 tennis player. Seito Sushi Baldwin Park was one of the event's main sponsors. In the Ladies Division, Vista Lakes Maryann Ballelos and Kim Han went undefeated to the finals with wins over Becker/Crews 6-3, Laqui/Sanchez 6-1, and after the re-draw another win in a re-match with Laqui/Sanchez in the semi-finals. Jacksonville's team of Camila Becker (originally of Chile) and Amanda Crews took the long route to the finals after their first match loss. They regrouped and won over Thuy/Yillah 6-1, Fiestan/Van Reken 8-2 in the semi-finals, to set up a Orlando versus Jacksonville championship match. Becker/Crews was able to win the first game and held a 4-0 lead in the finals, but the consistent play of the experienced team of Ballesos/Han enabled them to overcome the deficit and win the tournament 8-5. "The Typhoon Haiyan Tennis Tournament was so much fun! We are really glad we came" said Crews in the closing ceremony. James Nguyen who placed 3rd in the event and Kim Han who won the ladies division both graciously donated their prize earnings back to the relief efforts for the Philippines. The event was sponsored by international companies such as www.RealRealCool.com, Dragon Promotions, and Pool & Billiard Magazine. Local Orlando businesses Seito Sushi in Baldwin Park, DC/AC Air Conditioning, Florida Game Room, Dynasty Auto, Coach Jerry Fekete, and Savannah Manor were all contributors. Donations can still be made direct for the ABS-CBN Foundation at http://205.234.241.62/abscbnfoundation/ and also the Philippine Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org.ph. "It's terrific to have seen so many people get behind this event for the Typhoon Haiyan relief. I'm very happy to see the Orlando Tennis Centre utilized in such a positive manner, and promoting good health and goodwill through tennis", said Tom Sweitzer, Director of the Orlando Tennis Centre. The money raised will be sent to the Philippines #1 TV network ABS-CBN that has set up its charity Sagip Kapamilya as well as the Philippine Red Cross. Multiculturalism at its finest as players from different ethnic communities came together for a day of competition and camaraderie to raise money and awareness for the people of the Philippines
