RJ Bautista wins Tiger Cup 10-ball tourby Marlon Bernardino RJ BAUTISTA cemented his status as one of the Philippines' elite young sportsmen by topping Ibrahim Moharram, 12-10, in the final to win the 2013 Tiger Cup 10-ball tournament at the Star Billiards Center in Grace Village, Quezon City last January 13. In the semi-final Bautista bested Resty Labastida, 13-6, while Moharram edged Albert Agustin, 13-12, in the tournament hosted by long-time billiards patron Sebastian 'Baste' Chua. A former top player of St. Mary's and now playing for University of Sto. Tomas, Bautista is now playing under PCSO Bugsy Training Program Academy. He is a product of National Collegiate Billiards League or B-League tournament, a grass roots development billiards tournament in the country. ' It's all hardwork that made RJ Bautista one of the youngest cue masters in the country," said sportsman/businessman Ceferino 'Perry' Mariano, top honcho of Bugsy International Promotions, also the handler of World Champion Dennis Orcollo and Carlo Biado.

Sheffield To Stage Snooker's World Championship Qualifiers The English Institute Of Sport - Sheffield - will once again host the qualifying rounds of snooker's World Championship in April. Steve Davis, Jimmy White and Ken Doherty are likely to be among the famous names battling to make it to the televised stages of snooker's greatest tournament. The qualifiers run from April 4 to 14, and the 16 players to make it through will go on to the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield for the main event from April 20 to May 6. They will be drawn at random against the top 16 seeds. Tickets are available for Saturday April 6 to Sunday April 14 (no play on April 12 due to tables being re-covered) in the Badminton Hall at the venue. A spokesman for World Snooker said: "We are delighted to bring the World Championship qualifiers back to the EIS in Sheffield. In recent years it has proved an excellent venue and very popular with fans. "This is a fantastic opportunity to see snooker legends like Davis, White and Doherty play live, as well as the stars of tomorrow like Luca Brecel and Jamie Jones. The layout of the venue means that spectators can watch several matches at once. And with tickets starting at just £5, it really is phenomenal value for people wanting to see top level sport. "There will be so much at stake with players aiming to earn a place at the Crucible for the final stages of our most prestigious event." BOOK TICKETS NOW by calling 0114 256 5567 or visiting www.arenaticketshop.co.uk The seeding cut off to determine the top 16 seeds for the World Championship is on Monday April 1, following the completion of the China Open. Masters Prize Money IncreasedFollowing the outstanding success of the Betfair Masters, prize money for snooker's greatest invitation event will be increased from £500,000 to £600,000 next year. The top prize for the 2014 Masters will be £200,000, up from this year's £175,000, while the runner-up prize will increase by £5,000 to £90,000. Mark Selby won the Betfair Masters on Sunday night, beating Neil Robertson 10-6 in a thrilling final at Alexandra Palace. Jeanette Lee to be inducted into WPBA Hall of Fame!Billiards superstar Jeanette Lee, known throughout the world as “The Black Widow,” will be inducted into the Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Feb. 6 prior to the start of the 2013 WPBA Masters at Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Lee, who has won over 30 national and international titles, is currently ranked as the No. 3 billiards player in the world. Taking the sport by storm, Lee captured the nation’s attention in 1998 after being named “WPBA Sportsperson of the Year” and earning “Player of the Year” honors from both Billiards Digest and Pool & Billiard Magazine. In 2001, Lee was crowned as the World Games Gold Medalist and continued her success in 2003 by clenching the Tournament of Champions title. As she accumulated tournament victories, Lee quickly ascended to No. 1 in the world. “Being inducted into the WPBA Hall of Fame is one of the greatest honors a player can receive,” said Lee. “It's a part of history and to be voted on and recognized in this way by my peers on the tour means so much to me. While I do feel I've contributed to this sport, I still want to continue to bring new eyes to the game and help it grow. Thank you to the WPBA and ESPN for giving me the platform to do so, and I thank God, my family, friends, sponsors, past and present, and of course, my fans, for being there through it all.” Lee is currently working to reclaim her rank as the No. 1 billiards player in the world while raising a family of six with her doubles partner and husband, George near Indianapolis, IN. To follow Lee as she is inducted into the WPBA Hall of Fame, find her on Twitter: @JeanetteLeeTBW, Facebook: facebook.com/jeanetteleetheblackwidow, Instagram: JeannetteLeeTBW and www.BlackwidowBilliards.com/ . Jeanette Lee is a player representative for the American Poolplayers Association, the world's largest pool league. Among her mentors are the late Gene Nagy, pros Tony Robles, Bob Carman, Jerry Briesath, and Mark Wilson. Said Jeanette, “There are so many others that I have learned from, I want them all to know they were and are appreciated but these names are the ones that I have spent the most time with and really molded my love of the game, in both knowledge, fundamentals and winning attitude!”

Glittering Gould Is Shoot Out KingMartin Gould won £32,000 with victory over Mark Allen in the final of the Betfair Shoot Out In Blackpool. London's 31-year-old Gould cruised to a 104-0 win over Antrim's Allen in the final of the one-frame knockout event at the Circus Arena to score the biggest pay day of his career. Allen missed a tough red early in the final and world number 19 Gould compiled a break of 46. Allen had one more half chance but missed a long red and his opponent knocked in another 58 to win in style. It was Gould's second triumph in a tournament with a shot clock as he also won the Power Snooker Masters in 2011. His natural fluency at the table and steady temperament make him well suited to events where time is of the essence. Gould also thrived under the scrutiny of an often raucous crowd. The sound of Spandau's Ballet's 'Gold' - which will surely become his theme tune - rang out around the packed arena as he lifted the trophy. "Peter Lines uses that one for his walk-on music so I'll have to try and nick it off him!" joked Gould, who also won a Players Tour Championship event earlier this season. "I couldn't have asked for a better crowd, they were on my side and I kept on winning. "It feels fantastic. It's been a great weekend, I'm £32,000 richer and I've got a nice trophy. Winning any TV event is great, I'll have to ask Barry Hearn to use a shot clock in all tournaments, then I might have a chance of winning a ranking event! I'm one of the quicker players, I'm quick thinking and I like to get on with it. I've got a pool background where we had a shot clock so I'm used to it." Gould, who beat Rory McLeod, Mark Joyce, Nigel Bond, Andrew Higginson and Michael Holt to reach the final, added: "I probably felt more calm in the final than any other match. The money is nice when it goes into the bank but that didn't bother me. I just had the same philosophy all the way through: if you win you win, if you lose you lose. It would be nice to get a major under my belt this season, I'll keep practising hard and doing the right things." The dramatic Sky-televised tournament, now in its third year, featured 64 of the world's top players, with matches lasting a maximum of ten minutes and a shot clock of 15 seconds for the first five minutes and ten seconds for the last five.

John RousseauI am sad to report the loss of a good friend and pool enthusiast. John Rousseau passed away peacefully January 28th, 2013 in Phoenix, AZ. He leaves behind his wife Rosalie, their children Lisa, Wayne, Jason and Brian and nine grandchildren. Also brother Jim and nephew Randy. John was a highly successful businessman, well respected by his peers and a talented athlete. He had a great personality and touched many lives in a positive way. He served on the WPBA board for a while and attended events all over the country. He absolutely loved the game and many of the players involved in it. ‘I had the privilege of knowing John, as a dear friend, mentor and supporter. He lived his life with vigorous passion, and was the most creative and charismatic man I've ever met. He had a heart of gold – it’s an extremely sad time for all of us who loved Him.’ – Kristi Carter, WPBA Strategic Partnerships. Away from the billiard World, John had an incredible career spanning nearly 40 years. John Rousseau’s years of industry experience began in 1970 with National Data Corporation working with the Atlantic Richfield Credit Card (That’s ARCO of cheaper gas and ATM only fame). His extensive experience in Credit, Collections, Recovery and Risk Management had been honed by leadership positions with both credit grantors and collection agencies as diverse as Bank of the Southwest, Diners Club/Carte Blanche, Bank of America, F.M. Services, American Express, Nationwide Asset Management and West Asset Management. This experience had also been utilized by an even wider range of clients who have benefited from John’s involvement in a consulting role, these include Accelerated Collection Exchange, Asset Management Outsourcing, Bank of America/Student Loans, the City of Phoenix, Fair Isaac, Goldman Sachs, Integretec, Providian, and TRW.
‘I have known John for only the past 9 years. His reputation preceded our meeting however. He was a legend, really - so many people from so many companies in our industry spoke of his creativity and intelligence. I worked directly with him for three years. I knew him to be disciplined, hard-working, and relentless in his pursuit of constant improvement for our company. He taught me many things, and I know I will always remember him when I apply the lessons learned to the challenges I face in the future. I will miss working with John. He worked with some of the biggest and brightest talents in our business. He will be missed by all of them as well, I know’. – Mark V. Detrick, CEO, Capio Partners, LLC. Close friend, Jerry Briesath (Pool Instructor) recalls, “In business he was recognized around the world as the ‘Collection Guru’ and with his innovative ideas made millionaires out of many of his friends. John was one of those very smart people that, when asked to do a job, got it done his way and the right way, every time. He was intelligent, outspoken and had a great comeback for any verbal situation. John will be missed by the pool world, the business world and of course the cigar club where he hung out some of the time. He will also be missed by me – he was a great friend. His wife Ro was very dedicated and by his side every day throughout his several month illness.“ The service will be held on Monday, February 4th 2013. St. Joseph’s Church, 11001 North 40th Street, Phoenix. In lieu of flowers please donate in John Rousseau’s name to: Lymphoma Research Foundation https://community.lymphoma.org/tribute17470 N. Pacesetter Way Scottsdale, AZ 85255 (480) 305-2025 We will all miss you John! Allison Fisher

Q School 2013 Open For Entry! Have you ever dreamed of becoming a professional snooker player? Q School 2013 is your chance! If you believe you have the talent and dedication required to succeed on the World Snooker Tour, you can earn a place on the circuit via Q School this May. ENTRIES ARE NOW BEING TAKEN – just go to www.worldsnooker.com, look under ‘Featured’ on the home page and click ‘online entries' then follow the instructions. All players are strongly advised to get their entry in as soon as possible. The closing date for entering Q School is Friday 12 April at 12 noon. Two years ago, World Snooker introduced Q School as the new way of qualifying for the tour. It is widely considered to be the best and fairest way of gaining professional status. Staged at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield in May, Q School is three consecutive tournaments, open to all players. The semi-finalists in each of the three events are given a place on the tour. So that’s TWELVE PLACES up for grabs! It is open to players of all ages and nationalities (subject to terms and conditions). Just imagine getting through Q School then taking your place on the Tour…you could be taking on the best players in the world and competing for £8 million in prize money! World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “There has never been a better time to be a professional snooker player. The sport is growing rapidly all over the world and we have increasing numbers of tournaments across the globe. Prize money has more than doubled over the past three years and is set to grow further. For the successful players, the rewards will be massive. “Crucially for new players on the tour, next season we are changing the structure of eight of the 11 main ranking events to make it easier than ever for fresh talent to rise quickly up the rankings. All 128 players on the tour will start in the same round, which will mean that the lowest ranked player could face John Higgins, Judd Trump or Mark Selby in their first match! If you want to test yourself against the best, now is the time. And the lower-ranked players will only have to win two matches to get to the last 32, rather than four under the current system. We are getting everyone on a level playing field. “Q School is the perfect system for qualifying for the tour. As opposed to previous systems, you only need to spend three weeks finding out whether you’re good enough. This is significant for players from overseas who previously had to spend a whole year in the UK. “So if you want a shot at glory, get your entry for Q School in NOW and start practising! It could change your life.” The 12 players who came through Q School last year were Martin O'Donnell, Ian Burns, Chen Zhe, Sam Baird, Daniel Wells, Jamie O'Neill, Paul Davison, Sean O'Sullivan, Joel Walker, Robbie Williams, Rod Lawler and Michael Wasley. Many of these have gone on to achieve impressive results on the Tour this season. Burns, a 27-year-old from Preston, gained a place on the Tour for the first time thanks to his successful visit to Q School last May. He came through the first of three events, beating Rod Lawler 4-3 in the decisive match. And he has gone on to succeed during his debut professional season. Earlier this month he reached the last 16 of the PTC event in Munich. And he has qualified for the final stages of the Haikou World Open so he’ll be jetting out to China next month. “I’m really pleased with how I have done so far and the way I have played,” said Burns. “It is a big step up to the main tour, but I have been able to cope with it. The highlight for me so far was qualifying for Haikou, and I’m really looking forward to playing at a big venue for the first time. It will also be my first time in China, so I’m not sure what to expect but it is exciting. “At the start of the season all I wanted to do was to get a few wins under my belt, but as the season has gone on I have grown in confidence, and now my target is to get as close to the top 64 as I can. And I would love to make it to the World Championship at the Crucible, that would be a dream. “If anyone is undecided about whether to enter Q School, I would urge them to give it a go. All you need is one good tournament and it can lead to a massive change in your life. If you don’t enter you’ll never know whether you could make it. “I think it is the fairest qualifying system. You have to win four or five matches at Q School against good players, but if you can do that then you deserve to have a chance on the tour.” So don’t forget…enter Q School today, and chase your dream! BetVictor Sponsor Snooker’s Welsh Open World Snooker is delighted to announce BetVictor as the new title sponsor of next week's Welsh Open. The BetVictor Welsh Open will run from February 11-17 at the Newport Centre and will feature leading players including world number one Mark Selby, John Higgins, Judd Trump, defending champion Ding Junhui and Welsh wizards Mark Williams and Matthew Stevens. The BBC Wales-televised tournament is one of snooker’s longest standing world ranking events, ever-present on the calendar since 1992. World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome BetVictor as it’s the first time they have sponsored a snooker event. As a world-leading sports betting and gaming firm they are keen to get involved with a sport which can now provide a vast amount of exposure on a global scale, with the tournament to be televised in 77 different countries. “We have introduced a new format for the Welsh Open this year, in line with our plans to create fairer structures for ranking events. Only eight players are guaranteed a place at the venue, the rest will all go through the qualifying rounds. This will give us a field of players in form for the televised stages. We have also increased the prize money, with the winner to receive £50,000, up from last year's £30,000. “South Wales is a hotbed of support for snooker and every year we see the passion of the fans in Newport. We look forward to another successful tournament and to working with the BetVictor team.” Charlie McCann, Director of Online Public Relations for Victor Chandler Worldwide, added: "Snooker is a dynamic global brand and we are delighted to sponsor the Welsh Open and hope for a long and happy marriage; snooker has never been more competitive and we are thrilled to be associated with an event which will be televised in 77 different countries such is the sport's growing appeal. "You only have to go down the list of previous winners, which reads like a who’s who of the game, to get a feel for the history of the event with inaugural winner Stephen Hendry, Steve Davis, John Higgins and Ronnie O’Sullivan all on the role of honour. Ding Junhui is the holder and we wish him well in his defence of the Title but with Newport looking to get back in the Football League, Cardiff City favourites for promotion from the Championship and Swansea heading to Wembley later in the month perhaps the time is right for another home success? We can’t wait for the action to begin.” The deal was brokered by Essentially Group. Tickets for the tournament are on sale now and fans are advised to book their seats quickly. All-day tickets start at just £12 and fans can buy tickets for any three individual weekday sessions for just £20. To book call 01633 656 757 or visit www.worldsnooker.com/tickets The full draw and format will be available after the completion of the qualifying rounds, which run from February 6-9. The BetVictor Welsh Open is supported by Newport City Council.
