Taiwanese bets win first two qualifiers of Philippine Open Pool
by Marlon Bernardino

Chinese Taipei dominated the first day of the qualifying event, winning the first two spots for the main draw of the Philippine Open Pool Championships late Thursday at the Star Billiards Center.

Chang Yu Lung and Fu Che Wei defeated their respective finals opponents in convincing fashion to join 54 others already seeded in the main draw of the Philippine Open. a world-ranking event of the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA).

Chang preserved his best for last and outplayed Joven Bustamante of the Philippines, 9-2, in Qualifier No. 1.

Fu, semi-finalist in th 2006 World Pool Championship in Manila, scuttled OFW Mario Tolentino by the same score.

From a 1-1 standoff, Chang, winner of the China Open last year, was able to take eight of the last nine racks. Making up for his dry break in the 11th rack, the Taiwanese bet took advantage of a miscalculated safety shot by Bustamante on ball No.5 and cleaned up the table.

“I’ve been idle for quite some time because I’m busy commercial and residential apartment business,” said Bustamante, third placer in the World 8-Ball Championship won by Filipino Ronnie Alcano in 2007.

Despite the lack of preparation in this tournament, Bustamante was able to squeeze his way into the final round by beating Chang’s compatriot, former world pool runner-up Pei Wei Cheng, in the semifinal round.

But against Chang, he failed to bring his A-grade game.

Fully rested after making his way to the semifinal round earlier after easily disposing off Emille Martinez in the semis, Fu used his advantage over the worn down Tolentino, who needed to hurdle Rodrigo Geronimo in a hill-hill match, 7-6, in the semis.

From a slim 3-2 advantage, Fu took the next five racks and pounced on every miscue made by Tolentino.

Tolentino had several chances, the last one was when his Taiwanese foe scratched the cue ball off a break in the 11th rack. The Filipino cue artist sank the No. 1 ball, but missed on the No.2 at the corner, enabling Fu to get back quickly at the table and wrap up the match to make it an early double celebration for the victorious Taiwanese bets.

Some 100 male and female players from all over Asia and the Philippines are scheduled to join in the qualifying stage of the Philippine Open. They will compete for 14 spots (10 male and 4 female) in the main tournament, which will take place from April 7-11 at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall in Mandaluyong City.

Eight other men’s qualifiers are scheduled from April 1 to 4.

The women’s qualifiers are scheduled to be staged on April 4 and 5, with over 30 players competing for four spots.

Gomez, Mazon make it an all-Pinoy show in Day 2 of Phil Open qualifiers
by Marlon Bernardino

On the second day of the Philippine Open Pool Championships qualifying stage, it was the Filipinos’ turn to put on a show.

Roberto Gomez and Jundel Mazon took turns in beating their respective finals opponents handily to advance to the main draw of this event late Friday night at the Star Billiards Center.

With Gomez and Mazon already securing two more slots in the main draw, only six seats remain up for grabs in the qualifying event for men, which resumes Saturday morning also at the Star Billiards Center.

Four seats will be disputed by the lady competitors, which start to see action on April 3 and 4 in hope of joining the 28 other players who are already assured of spots in the main draw.

Current and past world champions in men's and women's division are already waiting in the main draw slated April 7-11 at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Among the world champions who are already in the main draw include Dennis Orcullo of the Philippines (World 8-Ball champion), Mika Immonen of Finland (World Ten Ball champion), former world champions Darren Appleton of Great Britain, Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines and Ralf Souquet of Germany and current women world titlists Jasmin Ouschan of Austria (World 10-Ball) and Fu Xiao-Fang of China (World 9-Ball).

Gomez, runner-up to Daryl Peach in the 2007 World Pool Championship in Manila, exacted revenge against a younger yet equally confident opponent who defeated him a day earlier. The more experienced Filipino dealt 17-year-old Chinese sensation Wan Chan a sound 9-2 beating in Qualifier 4 finals.

Mazon, on the other hand, nearly swept his opponent, Dominic Ting of Malaysia, 9-1, in a match that was literally one sided right from the start. The first seven racks were easily secured by the Filipino player, who was poised to bring out the broom.

Gomez quickly raced to a 5-0 lead before his rival won the next two racks. But the Filipino player engaged his younger rival in a battle of safety exchanges, a ploy which worked on Gomez’s favor.

The Filipino cue artist came through with another big run, taking the next three racks to move on threshold of wrapping up the match. During the exchanges of safety shots in the 11th rack, Chan saw a golden opportunity when he sank a difficult shot on ball No.6.

The Chinese player was about to complete his run when disaster struck – he missed the last ball on the table, ball No. 10, in the corner. The young competitor couldn’t hide his disappointment upon missing the shot that could have given him a chance to come back.

Gomez needed to sink the last ball on the table to formally clinch the victory, but Chan quickly offered his hand and conceded the match.

“I lost to him Thursday because I took him lightly. I thought I could beat him easily because he’s still young. When I was given a chance to face him again, I tried to be more cautious and play smart. I don’t want to give him a chance to win,” said Gomez.

Mazon his finals match against Ting a one-sided affair. At one point, four balls went in three of the six pockets of the pool table when the Filipino unleashed his powerful break. It was a strong signal for the Filipino’s entry to the main draw. He barely showed signs of fatigue after being pushed to the limit by a crack semifinals rival in Wang Ming of China. Instead, he preserved his energy for the tough grind and showed too much class against Ting.

The Filipino player raced to a 7-0 lead and allowed his rival to break the ball only three times. None of those breaks were successful for the Malaysian player, whose first point of the match came only in the eighth rack after Mazon was called for a foul while taking on the No. 5 ball. Ting cleaned up the remaining table, averting a possible sweep by the Pinoy cue artist.

A dry break on the ninth by Ting enabled Mazon to get back to the table, and the Pinoy cue artist wasted no time sinking one ball after another for an 8-1 lead.

Ting missed another easy shot on ball No. 6 in the 10th rack, and Mazon put an end to the match by cleaning the remaining balls.

Chinese-Taipei’s Chang Yu Lung and Fu Che-Wei flourished in the opening day of the qualifying stage of the Philippine Open Pool Championship, but Jundel Mazon and Roberto Gomez came through with equally impressive victories late Friday night at the Star Billiards Center and took the spotlight.

“My confidence level is so high. I believe I can beat him easily. If ever he will beat me it should come on a day where I will play really bad," said Mazon.

Philippine Pool: Pinoy junior standout David, Indonesian Zulfikri advance
by Marlon Bernardino

Former junior standout Renemar David is ready to play against the big boys in the Philippine Open Pool Championship.

On Saturday night at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City , David made this affirmation when he wielded the upset ax on his more illustrious rival Pei Wei Cheng of Chinese Taipei, 9-5, all the way to winning the Qualifier 5.

David was joined by Mohamad Zulfikri, who beat Yoni Machnato in an all-Indonesian finals in Qualifier 6, 9-5, later in the night.

Zulfikri took advantage of a crucial error by Machnato in the 12th rack.

Trailing 6-5, Machnato had a golden opportunity to equalize but he scratched the cue ball while trying to sink in ball No. 10. From there, everything went Zulfikri’s way as he became the first Indonesian player to make it to the main draw via the qualifying stage.

David is the third Filipino player to make it to the main draw via the qualifying stage. On Friday, Jundel Mazon and Roberto Gomez clinched a berth in the Stage 2 of this event where current and former world champions are already seeded and set to see action from April 7 to 11 at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

The 21-year-old pride of Candon, Ilocos Norte, jumped the gun early by racing to a 3-0 lead. He had a chance to make it four in a row, but his last attempt on ball No. 10 in the fourth rack went out of the table.

It was the break Pei needed in making it to the scoring column. The Taiwanese cue artist who placed runner-up to eventual champion Alex Pagulayan in the 2004 World Pool Championship made a fitting follow-up to stay within striking distance, 2-3.

But David was determined to pull away and wanted to make it a one-sided affair just like the early two Pinoy bets who just entered the Stage 2 event.

The player regarded as one of only few young players to deal legendary pool player Efren “Bata" Reyes a sound beating, won the next five racks to move comfortably ahead, 7-3.

David had a dry break in the 11th rack then both players got contented in safety exchanges. A miscalculated safety shot by the Filipino exposed ball No.4 for Pei, who cleaned up the table.

Pei had a dry break in the next rack, but got another chance when David missed the No. 6 at the corner, allowing his opponent to get back to the table. The Taiwanese bet wasted no time and closed in at 5-7.

But Pei bungled two crucial easy shots that could have pushed him back into the game. A missed on the No.3 at the corner allowed David to get his turn and clean up the table for an 8-5 lead.

David sank ball No.1 off a break in the 14th rack. He miscalculated the cue ball while preparing for the No.6 and needed to take a jump shot. Luckily, the No.6 went partially covered by No.9 and Pei was forced to take a bank shot for a 6 and 10 combo. The shot went unsuccessful and the Filipino dispatched the remaining ball and formalized his entry to the Stage 2 event.

"I’m just fortunate to dictate the match early. I was able to race to a 3-0 lead. Had the match played in a tightly-fought one, I might have a difficult time winning," said David. "It also helped me a lot that he (Pei) missed several easy shots."

Winning the Qualifier 5 didn't come easy for the Filipino. He needed to hurdle five foreign rivals -- Indonesian Sahroni, crack Chinese player Wang Ming, Lim Leng of Vietnam, Johari of Indonesia and Pei before securing a berth in the main draw.

WORLD LADIES BILLIARDS & SNOOKER ASSOCIATION - PRESS RELEASE

GREEN-baize queens from around the globe descend on Bury St Edmunds this week for the Greene King World Ladies Snooker Championship.

It’s the first time the Suffolk market town has hosted the World Ladies Billiards & Snooker Association’s season finale.

Main Tour professionals Joe Perry, Michael Holt and Martin Gould make guest appearances on Friday (April 8th) in the World Mixed Pairs, which kicks off six days of top-quality action at the Pot Black Sports Bar.

The round-robin stage of the main competition starts at 10am on Saturday (April 9) with the final scheduled for noon on Wednesday (April 13).

The eventual champion will pocket £1,000 and the runner-up £500. Prize money will also be paid down to the last-16.

Red-hot favourite Reanne Evans is bidding for a record seventh straight world title. And to extend her record 84-match unbeaten run on the WLBSA circuit

Attempting to de-throne the undisputed world number one are world number two Maria Catalano, Ronnie O’Sullivan’s 29-year-old cousin; Portsmouth’s Emma Bonney, who is also seeking a fourth successive billiards title; and Kent’s Katie Henrick, who is ranked fourth.

Leading the overseas threat is Hong Kong ’s impressive 20-year-old Ng On Yee, the 2009 and 2010 IBSF Women’s World Champion.

Also flying in from Hong Kong are Jaique Ip Wan In, who lost to Ng in the 2010 IBSF final, Yu Ching Ching and So Man Yan.

Two-time world billiards champion Chitra Magimairaj, who jets in from India , said her biggest motivation was seeing her home country winning cricket’s world cup. Magimairaj is joined in Bury St Edmunds by her compatriot Revanna Umadevi.

Spearheading the European challenge is Latvian number one Tatjana Vasiljeva and eight-time German national champion Natascha Niermann, now based in Cambridge .

From the world of pool comes England international Fran Calvert and two-time European champion Kim O’Brien.

Favourite to clinch a fourth straight junior title is the phenomenal 14-year-old Derby schoolgirl Hannah Jones, the world number six.

Ron Agnew is sponsoring the billiards to the tune of £600. The eventual champion will also receive a year’s free subscription to all English-Billiards Open Series (EBOS) tournaments, a package worth £200. Website englishBilliards.org is offering £100 for the highest break.

OFW Cuartero makes it to main draw of Philippine Open Pool
by Marlon Bernardino

For the third straight day, a Filipino player has entered the Stage 2 of the Philippine Open Pool Championships at the Star Billiards Center.

Overseas Filipino Worker Allan Cuartero scored a hard-earned 9-4 triumph over Andrew Kong of Hong Kong Sunday night to win the Qualifier No. 7. Cuartero is the first OFW to enter the main draw via the qualifying event.

But Cuartero needed a miraculous shot in the 13th rack to finally pull off a win. A spectacular bank shot on the No. 2 ball, which was well-covered by No. 6, clinched the win for the Kuwait-based Filipino player.

By sinking the No. 2 ball off a difficult angle on the side, Cuartero was able to dispatch of the remaining balls one by one, all the way to ending the match.

“It was a lucky shot,” said Cuartero, a house pro player in Kuwait. “But that’s the only was for me to get off a shot and I was lucky to pull it off.”

Just as expected, foreign competitors were able to dominate the field in the opening of the qualifying stage of the women’s division.

Former Asian Games gold medalist Lin Yuan Chun of Chinese Taipei and Wu Jing of China showed too much class over their respective opponents as they came away with contrasting victories.

Lin, who once competed in the country in the inaugural World Ten Ball Championship against some of the male players in 2008, flashed her deadly form.

A former gold medalist in the Women’s 8-Ball event of the 2006 Doha Asian Games, Lin outplayed her compatriot, Tsai Pei Chen, 7-4, to win the Qualifier No.1 of the lady’s event.

But the win didn’t come easy. Lin bucked a slow start and needed to bounce back from a 2-0 deficit. She won four straight and five of the next six racks to finally gain the momentum. She was only up, 5-4, when a miscalculated safety shot by Tsai changed the complexion of the match.

Lin pounced on her rival’s miscue and took the next two racks to secure the win. Wu repulsed a late charge by Filipina Floriza Andal before prevailing, 7-5.

DELA CRUZ BEATS ARPILLEDA TOOK THE LAST SPOTS OF PHILIPPNE OPEN POOL AT STAR BILLIARDS
BY: MARLON BERNARDINO

LITTLE-known Roland dela Cruz took the last qualifier spot to the Philippine Open Pool by beating compatriot Victor Arpilleda, 9-8, Monday, at the Star Billiards Center in Grace Village, Quezon City.

"My hard work was paid off," said the soft-spoken Dela Cruz, who joined early Pinoy qualifiers tumbok king Roberto Gomez, Jundel Mazon, former junior standout Renemar David and Allan Cuartero to the tournament proper set on April 7-11 at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City in the event organized by Raya Sports and supported by long-time billiards patron Sebastian "Baste" Chua of Star Paper Corporation.

In other results, Tomoo Takano of Japan downed Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat. 9-4, to win Qualifier 9.

Meantime, Vietnamese player Duong Thuy Vi became the first Southeast Asian woman player to advance to the main event via the qualifying stage.

Duong Thuy Vi defeated Lai Hui Shan of Taiwan, 7-3, spoiling an all-Taiwanese show in the final day of the qualifiers in the women's play.

In the other final, Tsai Pei Chen defeated Nur Sukmawati of Indonesia. The Taiwanese player won, 7-5, after her rival committed three consecutive fouls in the 12th rack. So the possibility of having another Taiwanese player entering the main draw looked stronger as the night comes to a close, but the Vietnamese had other ideas.

Duong was determined to make it to the main draw. She pounced on every miscue committed by Lai all game long, including a crucial miss on the No. 9 at the corner. When the Vietnamese finally nailed the last ball, her handful of supporters gave her a thundering cheer, signifying the joy Duong brought to Vietnam for winning the match. “I came here without expecting anything," said Duong. “We’re trying to take advantage on the exposure being given to us in the Philippines because we don’t enjoy having much competition such as this one back home.

Best of best takes center stage as Philippine Open Pool gets underway
by Marlon Bernardino

Present and past world champions. Current and former world No.1 players.

The best of the best in pool will take center stage starting today (April 7) as the Philippine Open Pool Championships unfurl with its Stage 2 event at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Newly-crowned World 8-Ball champion Dennis Orcullo of the Philippines and defending World Ten Ball champion Mika Immonen of Finland will banner the 64-player field in the men’s division.

The Philippine Open Pool Championships serve as a prelude to the year’s biggest event — the World Ten Ball Championship — to be held for the third time in Manila.

A total of 10 male players were able to qualify in the main draw after emerging champions in the qualifying stage held for five days at the Star Billiards Center and they are: Chang Yu Lung and Fu Che-wei of Chinese Taipei, Jundel Mazon, Roberto Gomez, Overseas Filipino Worker Allan Cuartero, Renemar David and Roland dela Cruz, Mohamad Fulfikri and Yoni Rachmanto of Indonesia and Tamoo Takano of Japan.

In the women’s championship, the two reigning women’s champions — World 10-Ball champ Jasmin Ouschan of Austria and defending World 9-Ball titlist Fu Xiao-Fang of China — will be ready to lead the 32-player field which was completed last April 5.

Four lady players, including former Amway World 9-Ball champion and 2006 Asian Games 8-Ball women’s pool champion Lin Yuan Chun of Chinese Taipei, led the late entries of lady participants after making the main draw via the qualifying stage.

Lin along with compatriot Tsai Pei Chen, Wu Jing of China and the only Southeast Asian player, Duong Thuy Vi of Vietnam, earned their spots after winning the four seats in the Stage 1 event.

Notable male and female lady players are also included in the field.

Ralf Souquet of Germany and Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines, both of whom are double world champions, inaugural World Ten Ball champ Darren Appleton of Great Britain, and former US Open titlist Shane van Boening of the United States, are expected to make the tournament a free-for-all battle.

The women’s division also features such topnotch players as Ga Young Kim of Korea, currently the world no. 1 in the WPA rankings, European Tour veterans Allison Fisher of Great Britain, Karen Corr of Ireland, and Kelly Fisher of Great Britain.

The Philippine Open is organized and promoted by Raya Sports in cooperation with the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP), the NSA for billiards. TV5 will broadcast the games via a block time slot in IBC-13. ESPN will carry the international coverage of the event.

Lady big guns out to a blazing start in Philippine Open
by Marlon Bernardino

Reigning Women’s World 10-Ball champion Jasmin Ouschan of Austria and world’s top lady player Ga Young Kim made their presence felt quickly at the start of the Philippine Open Pool Championships on Thursday, April 7, at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Ouschan and Kim beat their respective rivals in convincing fashion to serve notice of their title aspiration in this event sanctioned by the World Pool-Billiard Association and promoted by Raya Sports in cooperation with the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines.

The two darlings of the crowd brought both beauty and skills on the pool table.

Ouschan swept Veronique Menard of Canada, 9-0, while Ga also blanked her opening-day opponent, Aradhana Naik of India, 9-0.

Menard and Naik falling in an ambush came as no surprise, but the biggest stunner on opening day happened on the evening when Wu Jing of China completed an upset win over Allison Fisher of Great Britain, 9-7.

Wu, who needed to go through the qualifying stage before making it to the main draw, battled Fisher, a veteran of the European Tour and a consistent fixture in the Women’s Professional Billiards Association, toe-to-toe.

But the Chinese cue artist held steadier down the stretch to outlast her more experienced rival after 16 racks.

The rest of the big guns in the tournament – Kelly Fisher of Great Britain, Lin Yuan Chun of Chinese Taipei, and other Chinese players headed by past and present world champions Liu Sha Sha and Fu Xiao- Fang – also delivered just as expected.

Fisher, who showed her competitiveness in the world pool circuit by beating several male competitors in the inaugural staging of the World Ten Ball Championship in Manila three years ago, rekindled her rivalry with Monica Webb of the United States. But the British player came up with a more dominating performance to score a 9-5 triumph and advance to the winner’s side.

Lin, a former champion of the Amway World Women’s Championship and also the 2006 Doha Asian Games gold medalist in the 8-Ball pool event, demolished Hyun Ji-Won of South Korea, 9-2.

Liu, a former World Women’s 9-Ball champion, and compatriot Fu, the reigning title holder of the women’s 9-ball crown, also had an easier time disposing off their foes.

Liu ran roughshod over young Filipina player Jillian Go, 9-3, while Fu outplayed charming Vietnamese bet Duong Thuy Vi, 9-4, in a TV table match.

Other lady players who advanced to the winner’s bracket include Lim Yun-Mi and Yu Ram Cha of Korea, Chen Siming of China, Line Kjorsvik of Norway, Helena Benjamin of Sweden, Yu Han of China, Cho Chie Yu and Tsai Pei Chen of Chinese Taipei and Ina Jentschura of Germany.

Lim defeated Naomi Williams of Canada, 9-5; Yu whipped Suniti Damani of India, 9-1; Chen ripped Reggie Ann Biagcong of the Philippines, 9-1; Kjorsvik outplayed Angeline Ticoalu of Indonesia, 9-5; Benjamin outlasted Junko Tsuchiya of Japan, 9-6; Yu drubbed Geona Christine Gregorio, 9-4; Cho dumped Li Jia of China, 9-3; Tsai survived Keiko Yukawa of Japan, 9-7; and Jentschura nipped Marika Poikkijoki of Finland, 9-8.

Street Snooker Hits Sheffield

A revolutionary new kick-wall game combining Football and Snooker is coming to Sheffield for the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship. A Street Snooker installation will be in Tudor Square outside the Crucible for the duration of the tournament (Saturday April 16th to Monday May 2nd).

Members of the public will have the opportunity to play Street Snooker for free. High scorers will win fantastic prizes, including tickets to the Championship final, Snooker cues signed by the professional players, and much more.

Street Snooker is a target practice game that involves kicking or throwing a ball against a snooker-inspired board to ‘pot’ balls of different colours, earning varying points.

The aim of the game is for players to build a highest break by hitting the red triangle followed by a colour, until all the balls on the board have been ‘potted’.

Playinnovation, the company behind Street Snooker, hopes its hybrid game will bring the traditional game of Snooker to a new and younger audience, whilst at the same time encouraging people of all ages to become more active.

Street Snooker’s official ambassadors, Olympic Badminton medallist Gail Emms MBE and World Football Freestyle champion John Farnworth, will be making star appearances over the course of the event. John Farnworth will be performing his skills and attempting to break a new Street Snooker world record on Wednesday 20th April, and Gail will be on hand to demonstrate the versatility of the game on Tuesday 26th April.

Jason Ferguson, Chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, said: "Street Snooker is a fantastic idea and hopefully it will help get more people interested in snooker at grass-roots level, which is one of the WPBSA's most important goals. It looks like great fun as well and I'm looking forward to seeing people have a go at it during the World Championship. Let's see if anyone can make a 147!"

Betfred.com World Champion Neil Robertson said: “This is one of the best ideas I’ve seen in terms of getting young people involved and interested in snooker. Our sport is really buzzing at the moment with a lot of new tournaments, and it’s important for the future to have strength in depth at junior level. It will be great to see Street Snooker in Sheffield and to see what the reaction is like from the public.”

Gary Clifton, Major Sports Events and 2012 Programme Manager at Sheffield City Council, said: "Street Snooker's a great new innovation, and fits perfectly with Sheffield's offer during the Championship. Our aim is to open up snooker to everyone across the city, so that even if people haven't got tickets for the snooker matches, they can get involved in snooker-related activities. People will be able to play Street Snooker, visit the Cue Zone exhibition in the Winter Garden, watch the matches on the big screen, and much more."

John Farnworth, whose ball-manipulating skills have landed him numerous titles and four Guinness World Records, will be aiming to break his previous Street Snooker highest break score of 104. John comments “I wish there had been a game like this around when I was developing my skills as a very young man. It’s rare that such an inclusive and exciting game is made available to the wider community.”

Professional Snooker player Alfie Burden, who officially helped launch the game earlier this year, said, “I love the concept of marrying snooker with football; my two big sporting passions in life. There are a lot of young kids out there who don't know too much about snooker, but love their football. This is going to get youngsters interested and involved, which is good for the growth of the game. Having the game at the World Championship is brilliant. It will pull in crowds and everyone can have some fun with it. “

For more information on how to play the game visit www.streetsnooker.com

Lining joins two German players in Philippine Open Pool quarterfinals
by Marlon Bernardino

Antonio Lining is marching to the last eight of the Philippine Open Pool Championships.

The highly-ranked player in this WPA event defeated compatriot Lee Van Corteza, 9-5, to remain unbeaten on Sunday at the SM Megamall.
Trailing 5-4, Lining worked on his solid breaking game to turn back the former World Ten Ball runner-up Corteza.

The world’s No.2 player Lining had a string of run-outs and didn’t allow Corteza a chance to come back all the way to booking a seat in the quarterfinals.

“Yung ganda ng break ang nagdidikta ng laro kapag maganda yung break mo, mga 80 percent yung tsansa mo to win a rack,” said Lining, who won the gold medal in the 2002 Asian Games along with partner Django Bustamante.

Lining, playing under the banner of Jonathan Sy's Negros Billiards Stable who is scheduled to face Liu Hai Tao of China later, was joined in the quarterfinal round by Germans Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann.

A double world champion, Souquet found himself in another hill-hill encounter before edging former World Ten Ball champion Darren Appleton of Great Britain, 9-8.
Hohmann, on the other hand, beat Marcus Chamat, 9-4.

But the two Germans will find themselves in a head-on collision course for a Final Four seat. Both players are scheduled to play as of press time.

Carter Wary Of Grinder Harold

Ali Carter knows that patience is the key when he takes on gritty Dave Harold in the first round of the Betfred.com World Championship, which starts this Saturday.

Tiptree's Carter, who was runner up at the Crucible in 2008 and has since won two ranking titles, faces a tough first round draw against Harold, one of the slowest players on the circuit.

"The way he plays can really wind you up," said World No 8 Carter. "You've got to be patient and make sure your head is right, rather than letting the way he plays get to you and affect you. It's up to me to take my chances when I'm at the table and avoid being drawn into a long battle. I've beaten him twice already this season but they were both close games."

Carter made a sensational 147 at the Crucible in 2008 but was denied the ultimate glory as he lost 18-8 to Ronnie O'Sullivan in the final.

"I got to the semis last year as well and I've got great memories of the event," said the 31-year-old. "I love Sheffield - it has a unique atmosphere and it's our equivalent to Wembley or Wimbledon. The crowds are fantastic and it all adds up to the perfect tournament."

Carter suffers from Crohn's disease and had to have an operation last November to keep it under control. "I kept it quiet at the time because I didn't want to use it as an excuse," he said. "But you can see by my results that it did affect my form.

"In the past few tournaments I've played a lot better and hopefully I'm coming good in time for the big one."
He takes on Stoke's Harold this Saturday at 2.30pm and Sunday at 7pm.

TICKETS FOR THIS MATCH, AND FOR OTHER SESSIONS INCLUDING THE QUARTER-FINALS, ARE ON SALE NOW! DON'T MISS ONE OF THE MOST MAGICAL EVENTS IN SPORT.

Ding Accepts Disciplinary Charge

Ding Junhui has accepted a fine of £2,000 for failing to notify Tournament Officials of a medical condition that resulted in him not competing to the best of his ability in Euro Players Tour Championship event three earlier this season.

During the match against Liang Wenbo in Russelsheim, Germany, on 23 October 2010 Ding did not perform to his usual very high standards. This caused the Tournament Officials to report his conduct to the Association, which duly determined that a Disciplinary Committee should be convened to investigate matters.

Following notification of the Association’s concerns, the Player immediately responded to apologise and to explain that his performance had been adversely affected due to ill health. Unfortunately, the Player did not report his medical condition to the Event Organisers at the material time and continued to participate in circumstances where he may otherwise have properly withdrawn.

As a result of this the Disciplinary Committee concluded that the Player did not compete properly, which not only impacts on his reputation but also that of the Sport. The Disciplinary Committee did however accept that this was the Player’s first and only instance where the he was subject to a disciplinary procedure, which coupled with the mitigating circumstances of his ill-health and prompt explanation and apology, dictated that a fine of only £2,000 should be imposed.

The Player has accepted the Disciplinary Committee’s findings and accepts responsibility for his actions.

This should come as a warning to all Players of the need to ensure that Event Organisers and Tournament Officials are properly apprised of any circumstances (medical or otherwise) that may impact on a Player’s ability to perform to the very best of their abilities.

HOHMANN, CHEN TOPS PHILIPPINE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
BY: MARLON BERNARDINO

THORSTEN Hohmann of Germany and Shiming Chen of China is this year's winner in the just ended Philippine Open Pool championship at the SM Megamall on Monday.

Hohmann nipped Souquet, 11-10, to capture the men's title in this event also supported by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines and long-time billiards patron Sebastian "Baste" Chua organized by Raya Sports and sanctioned by the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA).

“Winning the World Pool Championship in Cardiff, Wales was the sweetest thing for me, and I won several other events the first time, but nothing is more special than winning my first championship in Manila," said Hohmann. “Everyone wants to win a championship here because it is here where pool is at home. This is really a dream come true for me."

Unlike in their first match in the quarterfinals where Hohmann was beaten soundly by Souquet, 9-2, the younger yet more determined player who is now based in Jacksonville, Florida dictated the tempo early.

He led 4-1 and was about to break the game wide open.

Souquet, as expected, fought back and made a game out of it. He turned the match into a see-saw battle and set up an exciting windup. Souquet won four of the next five racks to level the score for the first time, 5-all, capped by a spectacular long bank shot that pocketed the 1 and the 10.

Momentum shifted back and forth until the last two racks. Souquet was the first to reach the hill following a dry break by Hohmann, and the veteran player was able to capitalize and ran out the remaining balls for a 10-9 lead. Expected to go for the kill, Souquet relied on his solid breaking, a deadly weapon which he used in easily dismantling his opponents. Off the break in the 20th rack, he sank ball No. 3 and had no problem sinking the 1.

But just when Souquet was about to deliver the knockout blow, the usually cool and calculating player missed the No. 2 on the corner. His shot was too thin on the cut, allowing Hohmann a chance to equalize. And equalize Hohmann did, sending the match to the final rack. Hohmann sank balls No. 4 and 8 off the break, then came up with a nifty bank shot on No.1. He had no problem sinking the remaining balls for the win.

Meantime, Chen, a protege of Wu Chia-Ching, a double world champion beat European Tour veteran Kelly Fisher of Great Britain, 9-3, in the finals to pocket the women's title.

“I never expected to win this event, especially ending my campaign with a perfect record. My mindset is just to play my best every game because it’s basically a strong field,” said Chen thru Filipino-Chinese interpreter Joyren Ting.

Murphy – Only The Title Will Do

Shaun Murphy insists that only the first prize will satisfy him as he looks ahead to the BetFred.com World Snooker Championship.

Murphy lifted the trophy in 2005, beating Matthew Stevens 18-16 in the final to become the second youngest ever Crucible champion at the age of 22.

The Sale-based cueman reached the final again in 2009, losing to John Higgins, and has no has no doubt about his target this time.

“It’s great getting to the semis or the final at Sheffield,” he said. “But at this stage of my career, having won it before and held a few other titles, I’m only in it to win it. Anything else would be a disappointment.”

Murphy, who faces Scotland’s Marcus Campbell in the first round, has been in excellent form recently, winning the PartyCasino.com Players Tour Championship Grand Finals and reaching the semis of the Bank of Beijing China Open.

“I’ve had doubts about my game during the season, but I’ve kept the faith and come good at the right time,” said the World No 6. “I actually don’t think that form is that important going into the World Championship – you’ve just got to get past your first match then play your way into it.

The winner will be the player who copes best with all the twists and turns you go through over 17 days.

“The days when all of the seeds were expected to win their first round matches are gone. All of the qualifiers are very good players. Marcus won a PTC tournament this season and I know it will be a very tough game.

“I love the event and every time it finishes I feel as if I can’t wait until next year, so I’m determined to have a good run in it this time.”

Murphy takes on Campbell at 7pm on the opening day of the tournament, Saturday April 16, and 2.30pm the following day.

Record Sales for the Betfred.com World Championship

This year’s BetFred.com World Championship has hit record ticket sales, with a near sell out of seats just days before the tournament is due to begin at The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.

The final and semi-finals are sold out, as are most sessions of the quarter-finals and second round and seven of the first round matches.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We’re going to see the best standard of snooker for the last ten years, without question. No World Championship in 35 years has been this open. It’s the biggest and best tournament in the world, going to 800 million homes. This sport is on fire.

“If we needed confirmation of that from the most important person, the man on the street, then ticket sales are way ahead of last year. Looking at the schedule there are some incredible matches. It is one of the great sporting events so miss at your peril.”

“We released a number of extra tickets for the early rounds of this year’s tournament and the new online system made it easy for the fans to get the seats for the games they wanted early.”

Last year saw Australia’s Neil Robertson take home the £250,000 top prize and he opens the tournament this Saturday against Bank of Beijing 2011 China Open winner Judd Trump.

I watched the last few frames of his China Open final, he handled himself really well and showed he is good under pressure.
