What's your thoughts on the standard of the GB9 challenge tour for relative newcomers to 9-ball?

It depends on your background, if you're new to 9-Ball, but not to cuesports you should be able to win a few matches. If on the other hand you've never picked up a cue before it will be very tough!
As a rough guide when I was practicing hard on a good day I'd run 2 out of 10 racks (in practice) and 1 out of 10 on a bad day. On the tour however I really struggled under match pressure and only ever won about 5/6 matches over 2 seasons.

The new 2-tier challenge tour next season will suit players of ALL abilities. This is how it will work, at each event all challenge players are listed in ranking order with single event entries at the top, then we split the list in half to create the tiers. That way if you are weaker player, providing you are a member of the tour and have a ranking you will always fall into the lower tier and so will always avoid the good players. This lower tier will have £1,250 ring fenced per event. What about very good amateurs that don't play regularly on tour Andy, would they be given a 'seeding' to ensure they don't start in the first round with the weaker players to avoid the situation where you have a complete mismatch in round 1 (e.g. under the old format where players dropping down from the pro division had no challenge ranking so started in round 1)?

Any single event entries (non members) will be ranked at the very top of the seeding list at each event they play.
Anybody of a pro standard will not be permitted into the challenge event at all, they would have to take a pro spot (if one was available) and if not they could only play the main event.

Sounds like great news for the weaker players!

Applications for next season are starting to come in quickly now and the tour will be limited to 128 Challenge division and 16 Pro division. Therefore if you intend to join next season I urge you to do it NOW! It is on a first come first served basis but the absolute deadline for applications is as follows: Pro Division - £99 deposit - Deadline 31st December 2013 Challenge Division - £99 deposit - Deadline 31st January 2014 http://www.gb9balltour.com/application-for-2014-membership

I might come out of retirement if there's a "half blind and bald" division!

There are some exciting changes that will make it far fairer for challenge level players to realistically hope for and enjoy a great run. The tour is working hard to ensure that not only is it good for our top players, but worth it for those further down that form the heart of the tour.
