Myself and a mate were having a discussion/argument the other day about who do we think is/was the greatest cueist of all time...across all cuesports....Of course each one has its own skill set and can not really be compared. But who do you guys think is/was the best and why? Snooker has Steve and Joe Davis/ Hendry/ Reardon/Alex and John Higgins/ Ronnie to name but a few...Pool has Earl/ Efren/ Mosconi/ Greenleaf/ Carras/ Varner/ Ralf/ Bustamante...again just a few...3 Cusion has Sayginer/ Blomdahl...Billiards king was Walter Lindrum. And also Legendary Hustlers Like Minnesota Fats/ Patsy Houlihan and So Shaw ;p.....cheers peepz.

A difficult one to answer because I don't think you can compare really, but I'll try to answer anyway. :)

I would perhaps have to say Efren Reyes because he can play virtually any discipline in American Pool to the highest standard, he can play Snooker to a very high levelas attested to by the pros who've seen him play, and he isn't bad at 3-Cushion builliards either.

The other thing that makes him the greatest for me is his humility. He is a class act on a personal level too and seems to conduct himself well win or lose unlike his great rival throughout the years Mr Strickland.

Based upon the following principles:

- being non-fictional;
- being able to pot a ball well, consistently, across different cuesport disciplines;
- high achievement in at least one cuesport;
- conduct and sportsmanship on and off the table; and
- legacy.

Then I conclude that I am the greatest there is or ever will be :-)

But seriously, I think you have to take those principles in mind when weighing them all up (and it rules out a fair few).

And based on that I would say it's between:

Stephen Hendry
Steve Davis
Efran Reyes
Willie Mosconi
Walter Lindrum

Although I don't know whether Mosconi or Lindrum had any conduct issues (guessing not?).

Whats conduct got to do with cueing? The best cueist has to be Earl, SVB or Ronnie. The way those guys cue wow.

In my opinion 3 cushion players do not have a great a stroke as others as its much much more of a knowledge game and the tables being ultra fast which means they need far less cue power.

None of them because each player has his/her own individual style and technique that works for them to some degree or another, reguardless of how many titles they have earned in their careers.

Also, 3 cushion players use a different kind of stroke to other cuesports players, because 3C is a finesse game and you need to know the speed of the tables, the diamond system and the right stroke that allows you to shoot with alot more english at a softer speed.

There is no such thing as 1 single player being the best cue-ist or any of that malarky because as the replies in this thread already shows, different people will have their own views as to who they think is the best cue-ist.

Greatest cue action then goes to Ding Jun Hui. Favourite to watch has to be Raj Hundal as it looks ever so natural

Disagree actually, as that kinda contradicts itself :)

Greatness can only be measured by acheivements. Stephen Hendry holds nearly every snooker record.

So, on that principal, Hendry was or is the greatest cueist.

Prettiest cueist should be the title really ;-)

rocket ron head and shoulders above efren,hendry,davis ect,etc.
he makes centurys with either hand,won world titles,fastest 147 and holds record for the most 147s.

played and beat the best at pool,if he was to take any other discipline serious we all would be second best most of the time.

and this is just my opinion,hendry and davis in they pomp wouldent of won as many titles if ronnnie had been in the same era.

could efren make centurys with either hand ? ? ?

If half the top snooker players dedicated themselves to 9ball, they would eventually dominate the game.

Snooker is much, much, much harder than 9ball, in everyway.

I wonder just how good the likes of Ronnie, Hendry, Ding, Williams, Higgins, Maguire,Murphy, etc etc would be at the game.

Out of all the snooker players, I think it would be natural for shaun murphy to make the switch.

i agree snooker is the much harder game and it needs a full childhood of practice to make it as a top pro, any form of pool on the other hand i reckon would not take a full childhood worth of practice to make it to the top.
i think snooker players could switch to pool and compete at the high level after a good 6 month practice at pool, however top pool players could not make the opposite switch.
hendry all the way..

There is nothing in snooker id like to see more than Hendry back to his best, as there has never been a more perfect break builder.

It pains me to think, and a bold thing to say here, but Hendry is finished :(

Difference between snooker and 9ball in the terms of competativeness is,

If a good amatuer was to play Efren Reyes to 21 on alternate breaks, for example. The amatuer, its plausable to say could win 10 racks.

If a good amatuer snooker player played the likes of Ronnie, Hendry etc in a race to 21 at snooker, they would be lucky to get 1-5 frames.

Ive never been able to get my head around the see-saw cue actions, square on stances, chin 1ft up from the cue. It just isnt the right way, common sense dictates that.

I think the pockets should be tightened right up at 9ball, that will seperate the men from the boys, and you would see the cueists come through

imo

Ok, if that's the case then let me ask you a simple question... When is the last time you played on a 9ft table and ran 10 racks of 9ball or 250 balls in straight pool without missing on an American table with 5" pockets?

It'd be a fairly safe bet that you and most players, (except for maybe a few of the top 9Ball Pros in the UK) have never done it.

Snooker players would rather make American Pool more like snooker because they simply can't stand getting their asses handed to 'em at 9Ball by pool players.

In other words, typical selfish arrogant eliteist snooker players showing their greedy self interest by wanting to change the equipment of another cuesport to suit themselves.

If you can't handle getting beat by pool players, then go back to boring Snooze Cruise.

Jmho

Willie

i think the top snooker players given 6 month practice could adapt to any 9 ball table with any size pockets and compete at the top level and win some major comps too, the pool players could not do the opposite.
however just because pool players have never practiced snooker all their life it does not mean they are any less natural cuesists in their defence, maybe certain pool players have a naatural cueing gift but have never been interested in snooker
