My mate really annoys me when he tells me what to do at nine ball. I keep telling him he thinks like a snooker player. Is there a real difference between the two styles? I say yes. Pool is much more dynamic with a greater array of shots.? What do you think?

Next time your mate tells you what to do, ask him if he would like to play your shoots for you too. That way you can go and practice with someone else.

Hi Yes of course there's a difference. Sometimes the two styles overlap but you need a different mentality when switching between the sports. Biggest difference for me is with snooker its all about presice cueball control, whereas with 9 ball the least amount you have to do with the cueball the better. I find playing the simple positional shot in 9 ball is far more effective than trying fancy positional shots off 5 cushions with running side etc... Any snooker player can pot the balls, but its shot selection and trying difficult positional shots where alot of us fall down. Keep it simple...and don't use a snooker cue!

I'm currently training to try and turn pro and after getting tuition from a current 9-ball pro I can assure you that they are completely different games. I agree with the previous post... keep it simple and always try and leave the next shot so it doesn't require any screw or side.... when you can of course. There is a far wider shot selection available in 9-ball though, not least the comparitive ease of rail shots compared with snooker. I now smile when I see guys playing every shot at 1000mph with the cue ball flying round the table, when a simple stun would have been a better shot. Play the odds, leave the next shot as simple as possible and save the difficult shots for when you need them to get out of trouble. And yes... don't use a snooker cue!

I don't understand why we can't play pool with a snooker cue.Correct me if I am wrong but I have been playing pool with a snoker cue for a long time and I can still play well. What about Davis and Drago?Aren't they fine players?

I think it's OK to a point, but I'm learning about cue deflection and the different style of shot required by pool, which requires a larger contact patch on the cue ball to avoid miscues with extreme side. I'm not sure a snooker tip would be up to it, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. Maybe someone at Southfields on Sunday could tell us what Tony was using on the day.

I think it would be interesting to get Mark Gray's view on this topic.....A snooker pro for over ten years who has recently made a successful transition over to 9 ball.

Both Davis and Drago play with a Parris cue with a larger than normal tip, i.e. above 10mm. I was told Steve's is 11.5mm but I am unsure. Tony's looked the same when I hit some balls with it the other week, might have been slightly larger. Gatso Gray has recently gone over to a larger tipped cue(in the snooker style). The acceptance is that not all the shots can be achieved with a tiny tip. If these three have moved over to bigger tips, then thats enough for me to believe its true. More proof, a few years ago, Chris Melling got to the last 8 of the WPC with his 8mm 8 Ball cue. Whilst this kid is one of the greatest all rounders we have ever seen (snooker, 8 Ball, 9 Ball), he still said he couldn't do all the shots on an American 9 footer with his 8 Ball cue and subsequently bought an American cue from me. I did some work on Tony's tip for him in Germany a few weeks ago and I can tell you it's not much over 10 mil. Too small for my liking but at least he has a nice tip now [ This message was edited by: Riggers on 2007-05-22 16:54 ]
