Hi,

I need some advice regarding an American Pool cue...

- What should I be looking for when buying an American Pool Cue
- What's the difference between a £50 cue and a £300 cue?
- Will an expensive cue improve my game, or is it purely technique?
- Is there anywhere (in the UK) where I can view/try American Pool cues before purchase?

For many years I have played snooker (high break of 60) and the occasional game of UK pool - but have always used a snooker cue. Obviously, an American Pool cue is very different, hence my questions.

Thanks, everyone - really appreciated!

For some reason there is a lot more technology in American pool cues than snooker cues, so the choices are pretty much endless.

For me personally I really like the 'low deflection' shafts, not everyone is a fan, but it completely changed my game when I got a Predator 5K (with Z2 shaft). That has a 11.75mm tip and a different taper to a 'standard' pool cue.

One other recent development is the 'Chinese 8-Ball cue', which is a sort of Pool/Snooker hybrid.

So in short:

Look for similar things to a snooker cue (e.g. design, brand name to make sure you are getting what you pay for, the type of wood, the shaft, the flex)

A more expensive cue as with snooker cues typically has a more elaborate butt design, but bear in mind unlike snooker cues a lot of the price is also for the shaft.

A good cue made a huge difference for me personally

At GB9 events you can probably view a lot of cues, not sure about trying them though.

If you feel comfy with your tehnique then try to find something similiar to snooker cue what you already play.
American pool balls are bigger so heavier same time. Some snooker players find it hard to play with standard snooker cue. Also tip is much smaller as avarage pool is 12.75mm.
To find something similiar to snooker cue I'd suggested predator Z series shaft or McDermott i 3 shaft.

Lots of people seem to be recommending Predator cues. What is a good first Predator cue (complete cue), and how much should I expect to spend?

Is the cue ok for breaking off and playing - or do I need two cues?

thanks again everyone, really appreciate your help!

You need 2 cues. One break or break/jump and playing cue.

The Pro Shop sells Predator cues here:

http://www.pro9.co.uk/html/theproshop/main.php?P=cat&C=151

I suspect it would be a breach of forum rules to link to other sites, but I presume its okay to suggest checking eBay etc. as there is a second hand market in these.

Unfortunately as they are US cues the exchange rate is not as friendly as it once was!

For some reason PM's don't seem to be working, but I may be able to help you. If you're on Facebook you could message me on there

I thought the Pro Shop would take a few along to GB9 events, maybe Big Dave can confirm?

However if you're after try before you buy, I suspect you might need to ask around and hope someone is willing to let you have a go!
