Hi. I just bought a new Gold Crown V in London, UK.
I need to decide on the table specifications, most importantly the size of the pockets. I don't want it to be too difficult but I certainly don't want it to be too easy. I don't aspire to play on any of the UK or European tour events because i'll probably not be good enough -- i'd describe myself as a B level player.
Do you think minimum WPA pocket sizes would be a good idea or perhaps too hard for someone at my level?
-Corner pocket mouth (min: 4.5" max: 4.625") -Centre pocket mouth (min: 5" max: 5.125")
Does anyone know the pocket sizes for the Mosconi Cup?
thanks.

I think table pocket size for a table you have at home is a very personal decision, but you're being very logical about it, and as far as I know, you're probably spot on! If you're not a potential World Champion - then there's no point having the meanest pockets ever. You want a pocket size that is generous enough to make your table fun to play on, something that encourages you and your friends to play and practice, regularly, but at the same time, they need to be tight enough to give you that delightful little boost of confidence when you do go to a local club or competition and realise you've been practicing on a tougher table than the average. Those minimum WPA standards should be perfect for me! The Mosconi Cup actually has very tight pockets, but they have the TV lights and brand new cloth that help the table play very well. (They also have unimaginably talented players that make the pockets look like buckets). Having super tight pockets on your own table is a very popular choice for very competitive pro and semi-pro players who really want to sharpen their game as much as possible, but it's not for everyone. Here's an article about the world's tightest pool table pockets... www.pro9.co.uk/html/article.php?sid=929...Remember, all these balls are two and a quarter inches wide, so a pair of them touching side by side is exactly 4.5 inches. Personally, I think two balls wide for a corner pocket is perfect. I hope this helps. ----------------- Authorised Pro9 forum advertiser/sponsor [ This message was edited by: BigDave on 2014-03-28 09:09 ]

Hopefully some others will chip in with their opinions and some advice too. (Especially if they fancy an invite! )

Nice article Dave. Some tight tables there.
I think the general consensus is 4.5" for the corners, so that's what i'll go with.
Looking forward to our match one day Dave!

4.5" for the corner pockets is perfect in my opinion. I know that Rileys generally use Sam tables and I measured the pockets at our Liverpool competition and we play on 4.5" too. 5" for the middle would make sense too and I believe that we use 5 1/4" up here. I think the main thing is that you get a nice cloth and balls and maintain them the best that you can. Currently our tables are very tough as pace rejects balls down the rails if you have an awkward layout of the balls and need it, even if you're very accurate. If you get a Simonis (860?) cloth and get the table perfect from the start you'll really enjoy the Brunswick as it's a great table and better than Sam in my opinion... If you have any more questions PM me.
