Alex Lely... Most of you will know him.. This is news that's just has been announced by the dutch team coach.. So this is new... don't think a lot of people know about this.. I knew that this was coming a few eeks ago when I talked to him.. He wanted to quit about a year or 2 ago but when the IPT came along he decided that the poolthing might work for everybody and that there might be a decent way to make a living out of pool... He was going for it.. Full force! But the IPT has disappointed a lot of people and he's had enough... What exactly the reasons are for him quiting he hasn't announced yet.. So when I know more.. I'll let you know.. but this is a real loss to the poolworld... I'll use Babelfish tomorrow to translate the column of the coach...

Some of the reactions so far on other forums..
Hereby I like to inform you guy's that a great player quits as a profesional pool player. Alex Lely will pick up his normal life with his family. He was always a great player with big ups and downs. He won the World Pool Masters in 99 and he won the last Eurotour in Weert 2006... In between many great highlights.
Best match I have seen was between Souquet and Lely in the 2005 European 9-ball championship as Souquet lost position on the winning 9 leaving alex a change to make a legendary comeback with a great victory in the end!!
All the best CHAMP!
I truly hope you're not being serious. Alex is one the devils playground of a player....rock solid strokes and unfloppable mental toughness are two I'd describe this guy.
Alex Lely is one of my favorite Dutch players. I think he's too young to quit. He's quite good. An asset to his country. If he's only quitting becoz of frustration in the WPC, I think he's making a mistake. But if he is under some deep personal reasons, I don't know what to say.
I hope he doesn't quit yet. Take a hiatus! Go refine your skills some more. But come back to the sport that has earned you respect the world over!
Come back and earn some more!

How do you know? Is that just a guess? Do you know why he quit?
Until he comes forward with a statement you can't be sure of anything!!

I knew it would come when the IPT collapsed... Talked to Lely about the future in the EC this year, and he told me that IPT was his only reason for continuing...
A sad day...

The majority of talented players who have a love for billiards the way he does, make a return at some point.
I can't think of a reason why he wouldn't unless he has to have his arms amputated.
My guess is, he needs to face upto reality and earn a living to look after his family. Once his little kiddies are all grown up, he will most likely make a return.

At which point, hopefully, there will be a living to be made in the sport for all professionals.

But I do agree, it is a great loss. One of my favourite European players.

he quits playing with the National Team... But if I understand it right he'll still play some smaller tournaments in Holland or the ranking tournaments.. Trying to convince him to come over for the EPT.. When they know their dates....
