Newport was a great venue for the event... and there was some really high quality stuff, I felt a bit sorry for Ortmann (yes I felt sorry for the germans!) - he played at such a consistently hight level in both the quarters and semi finals and pulled out some great shots under pressure.
And in the final, with Phillipines 8-4 up against the USA, Reyes played the cheekiest one handed safety - what a masterful psychological stroke - a statement to the yanks that there was no way back. From that rack on the yanks had their heads down, the bullies had been mentally beaten - Strickland gave up.
Its a shame more of you guys were not able to come along to watch the event live - I think matchroom must have done a bad job promoting it.

Venue was fine although Newport was a little shabby, seems strange to me that such an international line-up wouldn't warrant a more central venue. It's a shame Matchroom does little to promote these event more, I'd prefer to pay a nominal fee for tickets if it meant increased publicity, although the entire Philippines seemed to know about it! Earl said before the final that he'd wished he'd brought 200 fan's over with him (crowd was the 3rd player for the philippines, and Earl knew it).

Yeah Earl would not even sign autographs for little kids at the end - fuming is not the word. I did get a signed official Matchroom poster of all 8 semi-finalists though. Comeswith being there all weekend and having access to the players lounge though. [ This message was edited by: The_Teach on 2006-08-29 13:18 ]

Looks like less than 200 now. Can't really believe he had that many anyway. Perhaps thats why they put him in with Rodney! Ever-body loves him! Go Efren! Next time I want to see one leg in the air as well! -----------------

As soon as Efren played that shot USA were never going to win. Earl thought it was incredibly disrespectful, somehow. Thing to remember is that it's all mental at that level - especially on those tables and when 'The Pearl' involved. On another note Earl was hilarious. He stood outside the venue for about 3 hours telling random stories to folk all week.
Matchroom made some amateur mistakes. It only took 1 of Newport's local chavs to find out that the tickets were free and they would get a buzz off sending 10 tickets to each person that lived on their street! They should have made them a couple of quid each – the same people would still have gone and we wouldn’t have had to put up with about 20 kids running about in-between as well as DURING racks! I knew people who didn't come because they were told there were no tickets left. Anyway why the the devils playground Newport Gwent - felt 3rd world? I felt a bit embarrassed for the players.
Finally, I wasn't impressed by the Pilipino fans. I watched 90% of the games that week and whenever the Philippines were about the venue they would ONLY come to watch their guys play. Clearly the majority had absolutely no interest in the pool whatsoever and just wanted to bask in the presence of Efren and Django.
