Looking after cues / shafts |

I'm relatively new to American pool and have just bought a Poison cue with a Z2 shaft. I'd just like some advice on what I should be doing to look after it, cleaning, storing etc. Sorry if someone has posted this before.
In the days when I played English pool I used to sand the shaft down to keep it nice and smooth but obviously, I don't want to do that with my Z2! I assume polishing the cue wouldn't be a good idea.
The case I've got is a solid metal one which will do the job for now until I buy another one. I'm just a bit concerned that the shaft might move around in it too much. Is there anything I can buy to put on the tip / joint to protect it (the joints are bullet uni-lock ones).
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers guys, see you in Croydon

Joint Protectors are a "MUST" in my humble opinion!Either with a Predator logo like this... ...or plain joint protectors like this! There are a tonne of cue care/cleaning products in The Pro Shop... I'll leave it to others here to recommend and justify their favourites. We'll be bringing The Pro Shop to Croydon so you can have a look at everything there if you like? Which model Poison cue did you get... We're considering stocking them... They look REALLY gorgeous! How do you like the cue now that you've got it in your hands? Will those jp's fit his cue Dave? I thought the Poison cues used a modifided uni-lok joint?
As for looking after your cue the best thing i can recommend is don't let anyone else use it! Nearly everytime i've let someone else use one of my cues it's come back with a ding that wasn't there before.

Cheers. I think I'll have a look in Croydon so I can have a chat about them too.
I just got the cheapest AX1 with a Z2 shaft. The uni-lock is a bullet uni-lock which as far as I know is a new style so not sure if it would fit those joint protectors.
I'm really liking the cue, I'm still out of practice but the Z2 has really made a difference with some of the shots I can play. Even getting decent spin on the ball with my left hand!
Although, the first tournament I played in I drew Michael Valentine in the first round. The first SAPPA event I drew Billy Edmond in the first round. It's not fair!

The best thing any player can do is keep a hand towel handy. Use it often to wipe the sweat from your hands, as well as wiping the shaft down during play. Don't be afraid to stop the match to clean your hands if they are sweaty and or dirty. As in most things, prevention is the key, not an after the fact remedy. If you need to sand use the lightest grit you can find. I used a product called smooth papers and they were very good. After the match get the tip clean, wipe any excess chalk off so it doesn't deposit in your case.

Just how good are the Q-Clean products i heard that using lighter fluid on your shaft gets it clean but i'm not so sure. Comments on the Q-Clean products though please.

I don't know about lighter fluid, there is a product called magic eraser. Its a cleaning product and it's what a lot of cue mechanics use in the states. It's very easy on the shaft, and uses very little watter. If your shaft is very green from dirt and chalk this will amaze you.

Does anyone know if there are any joint protectors out there that will fit the shaft and 1st section of the Predator Air Jump? I know the Predator joint protectors work fine for the uniloc joints, but not on the other joints, any ideas anyone?

Take care with Magic Eraser. It's a nice little gadget but I believe it's cleaning qualities come from the fact it's abrasive albeit very slightly. Water and abrasives are not recommended.

Ah cool, have been searching around, but can't find any in the UK, any ideas where I can get some from? I saw some Predator Predator 5/16x14 Joint Protectors, are these the same thing?

No mate they will not fit. Some standard joints: 5/16-14 5/16-18 Uni-loc 3/8-8 (Radial Pin) 3/8-10 3/8-11 These are the 6 most common joints on cues and are all different sizes. As Craig said, the Predator Air has a Radial pin joint so you will require Radial pin joint protectors. [ This message was edited by: thediamond on 2008-04-20 16:41 ]

I've been hunting around for radial pin joint protectors and I can't find anywhere in the UK that sells them (could get them from the US, but then have to pay loads for postage), any ideas anyone?
