We dont have any pro's in our club, but we do have the new 2006 World junior 8 ball champion Pat McCarron. We also have former 3 time junior world champ Darren Matthew.

!!! QUOTE !!! A lot of the people on these forums ARE the Pro's to be honest with you 9m. Did we ever define the word "Pro"? To my mind a "Pro" is someone who makes his living from his chosen sport. Are you saying Dave, that of the 227 registered members of this forum, most are "Pros"?

In which case, there are probably less than 10 pro's in the UK. - simply no money in it.

I could be wrong but I think 9m was reffering to those who play on the BPPPA tour. If not then the amount of pros that play in clubs around the country would be limited and any replys on this forum would be minimal at best. Maybe semi-pro or UK pro would have been a better way of describing it. [ This message was edited by: cusack_147 on 2006-06-11 10:10 ]

Since it launched, Pro9.co.uk has become compulsory reading, not just for the UK's pool players, but to hundreds of pool obsessives from around the world every day. Pro9.co.uk's members are professional pool players, cue-sports enthusiasts, club managers, tournament organisers and various "movers and shakers" in the cue-sports field, from magazine editors to television sports promoters. Everyone who has replied to this post so far plays on a "Pro Tour"... Apart from you of course - and even you are involved in the running of a "Professional Pool Organisation" - I was just pointing out the general Pro9.co.uk demographic - although I know you'd prefer a debate on the definition of Pro/Amateur Pool Players! Hey... That would make a great poll!

Professional adjective 1 relating to or belonging to a profession. 2 engaged in an activity as a paid occupation rather than as an amateur. 3 worthy of or appropriate to a professional person; competent. noun 1 a professional person. 2 a person having impressive competence in a particular activity. I guess there are two ways you could define a "professional" in the sport, firstly someone who makes their living from pool. Secondly, someone who acts with dignity, respect, courtesy and shows sportsmanship to their opponent within their chosen sport. For me it will always be the first definition, but I guess you could define "professional" in the second instance aswell. ----------------- Chris @ Pro9[ This message was edited by: Buckster_uk on 2006-06-11 14:54 ]

I'm on the BPPPA tour but there's no way that qualifies me as a pro! That's plain silly IMO [ This message was edited by: Riggers on 2006-06-11 20:52 ]

Completely agree with Buckster & Riggers on this one. In my book, a professional is someone who makes a living from their chosen 'profession'. I don't believe you can hold professional status simply because you play on a professional tour.
People that spring to my mind are: Imran, Raj, Daryl, Damian Overton, Darren Appleton, Andy Richardson, Mick Hill, Carl Boyes etc. All these people play pool full time and earn their bread and butter potting balls! Most of the rest of the UK pool base are 'amateur' by status as they earn their money through other sources.

I would love to be a professional pool player but until it means I can afford to give up the day job then I won't be calling myself a professional!!
