Guys, I'm considering having a purpose built room/building built in the back garden to house a pool table.
Apart from enough playing space and a beer fridge, what else would i need to consider before i speak to the architect/builders..... Things like windows (do i want natural light?) Heating/Air Conditioning etc Flooring (apart from a level one) etc
Cheers mike

one of my good friends has just had a pool room built in his garden. The windows are a bit of a pain because you get the glare on the table, and its quite offputting. Best idea for this is get windows but also have blinds that cut out 100% of the outside light. also make sure you have good lighting inside for when the blinds are closed.
He has a good heating thing on the wall, i dont know too much about it other than he can set it to a certain temperature, so it's not too hot in the summer and not to cold in the winter.
I dont think that the flooring makes an incredible amount of difference, maybe slightly, but i haven't yet niticed any difference between carpet and matt floring (in rileys).
Another thing is the seating, he hasn't got his in yet and it was a bit of a pain standing around while he was potting balls.
Apart from that m8 i think the rest is up to you. Maybe get a cue rack with a few cheap cues on it, decent set of balls and most importently, a decent table & Cover
hope this helps a little

thanks for that, i had a feeling that windows could have been a problem.
Is there an optimum temperature/humidity for a pool table?
Hadn't thought about furnishings!! will get a couple of cheap bar stool, tv for the wall, overhead table lighting but also spotlights to provide more lighting when the table isn't in use.
I'm sure DaveMc will argue that my Meucci will class as a cheap cue!!

Hi Mike,
Building your Pool Room.
First thing is to make sure you have a minimum of five feet round all sides of the table. Then on at least one side or one end, add three or four foot extra. A billiard room without any seating is not a happy place. Plan for a sofa, two if possible, but make sure there is room for people’s legs so they don’t get in your way when you are playing. The bar stools are a good idea as the non striker can park his bum easily and still see what’s going on.
You were very smart to consider windows early in your plans. Have just one window but do not put it on the sunny side of the building. To have sunlight shining in is ridiculous, but you do need one window for when you are not using the table. You still need the curtains though.
Fix a bridge/rest at each end of the room, on the walls not on the table and close to a corner so they don’t get in the way when striking from an end cushion.
Apart from wiring for the lights, make sure there are a few of sockets for vacuums, music, fridge etc.
If any of this helps, don’t forget to send me an invite.
Best of luck,
Stu…

lol, i was going to say abotu the invite, but i thought it a bit cheeky lol. Music is good, and if you want to go even more serious then an electronic scoreboard is an idea.
Just a few more points

I got a room built over 3 years ago for my 9 ball table the main things you have to get right are your concrete foundations, make sure its perfectly level, and natrual light is a plus for the lighter parts of the year,a couple convector heaters do the trick for me during the coldest periods of the year in terms of heating. I bumped my flooring up to 1.25 inches to make sure theres no movement in the floor, that is very important as poor foundations and floor level will make the table level suffer Hope this helps Dan Mccreadie (Challenge Division)
