I am ahving a nightmare of a week you see I just bought a moori medium tip that cost £5 sanded the ferrule down a little, roughed the tip and then glued it on with locktite super glue gel left it 3 days to set then used it and 3 shots in it came off and had to use a house cue.
Can someon tell me why this happened and how to stop it happening in future, btw I did notice that when the tip was put on there was a slight gap beteween the ferrule and tip but the ferrule looked and felt completely flat before the tip was put on.
Any help is appreciated.

Thats weird. I always use superglue gel and have never had a tip come off. Personally I always run the tip along a metal file (because it is completely flat) and also run the file across the top of the ferrule. I can always seem to get it to fit flush. I also play with the tip an hour or so after putting it on so 3 days should be plenty of time. You should just try it again. I am sure it will stay on.

If you are using a layered tip like a moori etc, you should avoid using superglue gel as it can sometimes turn the tip to mush, always use normal superglue on a layered tip. Gel is ok for normal leather tips. Also a cue top sander is great for flattening the top of the ferrule.

I use sandpaper which has worked great in the past and the superglue gel has not caused any problems until now.
p.s
The first tip I used was the Moori and the second was an elkmaster so why did the same thing happen with both tips.

Boozebag i would disagree with you on this one i feel the gel is really the best option........for feedback on my tipping ask thediamond he is more than happy. I have never had a tip turn to mush or come off. I have fitted moori's talismans snipers and kamui's. On 2008-01-05 22:56 , 9ball Wrote:!!! QUOTE !!! I'm wondering if its just a problem with the glue. Do make sure when you are fitting the tips that there is no gaps and keep as much pressure on as you can for a decent length of time. I find that after about 5-10 mins i can be as rough as i want and the tip wont come off. ----------------- [ This message was edited by: PC on 2008-01-05 23:01 ]

If you can use a fine metal file on the top of the ferrule so it is flat, make sure the tip is so it sits flush on ferrule, you may wish to burnish the base of the tip. Then spread some super glue (I always use gel and have never had a problem with it, whereas I find normal superglue is harder to use and soaks into tip). Position tip, Press firmly so any excess glue is pressed out. Then I turn my cue upside down and leave it for a while. Then I can work on the tip. I have never had one come off. Maybe you buy a new tube of glue. Other than that I have no idea what the problem could be. Good luck with it!

Lol. I just posted after you PC. I think it could be a glue problem and like you I would stick (no pun intended) with the gel.

I don't recommend sanding a Moori tip or the ferrule unless they have been sanded before and become out of shape, in which case a metal file is your best chance of getting it flat again. Otherwise just carefully remove all the old tip from the ferrule by scraping it with a sharp knife in a circular motion taking care to remove only tip and not ferrule. Then use a stanley knife with a new blade to make slight cuts in the top of the ferrule in a portculis type effect (like a noughts and crosses grid). Then do the same with the Moori but take care to make only very slight cuts so you don't go through the layer. Then put super glue gel on both tip and ferrule (ferrule should be masked around the edges to prevent spillage onto sides). Put teh tip on a flat hard level surface and carefully put the ferrule down onto it getting it perfectly centered. Then hold down for about 10 minutes and then leave for a further 30 minutes before attempting to shave the tip edges. There is really more to it than that and that's just the basics. If you are not sure what you are doing then just get someone to do a professional job on it. [ This message was edited by: Riggers on 2008-01-06 11:13 ]

I agree with Lee, I never use a file to work the ferrule, although the file is flat if you file the ferrule at an angle then thats game over! I like to use a new stanley blade as well, you can pull off the glue and the old tip with out taking much off the ferrule, personally I scrape the glue side of the tip with the blade to roughen it up a bit as superglue works best when adhearing to a pourous surface. The bottom line is do not attempt to fix a tip on anything other than a perfectly clean ferrule, do not leave any old glue or even fractions of tip on the ferrule as this will spell disaster...... All my mates get me to do their tipping now and its only because I take my time and make a good effort at it. I have seen Lee retipping and he is as serious about it as me. You must keep a pressure on the tip once its on and I personally keep turning the cue to keep the pressure even for about a minute or so, i end up with massive prints of the tip on my thumb! But at least it works for me! I have not had a tip come off before and I work the tip after about 5 minutes as the glue has then set and once superglue is hard it doesnt require any more time thats the whole idea of the glue! so leaving it for 30 mins or 3 days is not required (sadly I used to sell the stuff so I know more than most about its make up ). Any how I hope this helps! Me and Lee can do tips from now on for a snip at £79.99 !!!
