I know Im running a severe risk of getting a whooping because I have asked a couple of times about cues. But I like to be thorough beofore I part with money. so could anyone give me any ideas on the following: Length of cue (Im about 5' 7/ Joint Tip Ferrule size Wrap Shaft. weight (I find i play better with medium weight cues, but what is that specifically? Im going to buy one jump/break cue and one playing cue, so if anyone isnt sick to death of hearing me go on about cues, I would appreciate any advice ----------------- Due to economic constraints. The last J&J jump/break ever to be sold by me is in the Pro Shop at the moment. Great value for money. I have sold 15 of these. Ok, from the top: Length is typically 57" - 60" with most cues coming in at 58". A few of my more vertically challenged friends have 57" cues but they are not common and you would possibly have to have one made. Joint: Materials...Phenolic, ivory, steel, wood. Pins....5/16-14, 5/16-18, 3/8-10, 3/8-11, 3/8-12, Uni-loc, Radial pin. Most of these can be flat faced or piloted joints. All have different characteristics, let us know if you prefer soft, stiff, hard hit...tip is also a big factor. Tip size: for American pool I would pick no less than 11.5mm and no more than 14mm, with 12.75mm being the norm these days. Wrap: linen, leather, lizard, cork and of course no wrap....loads and loads of variations. Shaft: maple with pro taper or straight taper. Pro taper means half way up the shaft, it is the same diameter all the way to the ferrule. Helps with the loop bridge. Weight: 18oz (light) - 21oz (heavy) although don't look into this too much, use different cues as balance points can affect the way the cue plays. I have a Szamboti that is 21oz but its really easy to play with (and I like a lighter cue). Hope this helps for now.... [ This message was edited by: thediamond on 2007-08-01 13:09 ]

Hey guys Maverick, I concur with Si on the wrap, part Wrap:- The Andy Gilbert, that I got from Si, has a lizzard skin wrap, and is miles better than linen, simply because it gives a very good and comfortable grip, and you don't have to worry about getting any fibre burns on your grip hand, that I have found with linen wraps. Weight:- Generally if you like a medium weight cue, about a 19oz - 19.5oz is about perfect, as it's a nice in between weight to give an easy stroke, but still give the freedom to add plenty of cue power if required in your stroke. Like Si has mentioned though, there are many factors in cues as a whole and individually, and so, if you know what kind of hit/feel that you like, then that is half the battle. Either way, I hope that this is of some extra help at least and I hope that you can find some cue sticks that are right for you Willie ----------------- If ya got 'em, smoke 'em [ This message was edited by: TheWizard on 2007-08-01 14:52 ]

You won't find the right cue first time. I moved over from English 8 ball and hated every American pool cue I touched when i first moved over. They are very different! The best I found was using the Z shaft which is more like a snooker cue. Unf. you have to try them out, then you'll find what you like. But be warned, materials won't make the difference too much, it's the way that the shaft is constructed...

I beg to differ jc, materials and the construction of the butt makes a heck of a difference from cue to cue. Agreed the shaft and tip play a large part but if thats all it was.....why are you buying a James White? [ This message was edited by: thediamond on 2007-08-01 15:29 ]

Playing cues are hard to pick - Break cues are a nightmare! I had a Stinger , BK2 and J&J and I'm still struggling. I'm seriously thinking about a £££ X-breaker.
The most depressing thing is sometimes for a few games you do 3 balls every time then nothing for hours on end! I can't take it any more!!!!

Thunder - thanks for the offer but I'll have to save up first. Who knows, I might even learn to play with one that I've got!

i know what you mean about break cues fluke. i'm using a bk2 but also got a bunjee blaster and to be honest i'm not sure the bk2 is much better. maybe i'm just rubbish at breaking!!!!!!!
as for playing cues i've just got a schon from the diamond which feels so much better than my 5k3.

Yep, that's the one , you have definitely got a very good quality and reliable cue stick there buddy I was sooo wishing to get that, instead of the Gilbert, but finances didn't permit, but saying that, I'm more than happy with what I have, and I'll bet that you're definitely well chuffed with the Schon I'm glad that there are some players that have got great taste in cue sticks, and you're definitely shown to be one of them Willie

You cant go wrong with the JJ for your break cue, if your backgroundssnooker or english 8 ball the z shaft is the one to go with in my opinion. I just couldnt get along with the regular shaft for my joss av08
