The Spanish Championships started yesterday with the Mixed Scotch Doubles of Galicia and continued today with various team events which are organised for the players from the northern Spanish provinces of Galicia. The national events get under way on Monday when your's truly will be playing in the veterans events, I probably won't be publishing the results! The international event takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will involve the best Spanish players plus classy players from the UK including Daryl Peach,Tony Drago, Imran Majid, Andy Worthington, Tony Burton, Karl Boyes, Anthony Ginn. The venue is ready and waiting: 7 Foot Tables for players of lesser categories. 9 Foot Tables for the elite of pool. Just a small sample of the hardware that is on offer this week.

Peter, this setup looks as good as it was last year!......awesome! Just out of interest, how many are in the team of people that make this one event possible? I dont mean table fitters, delivery men, cleaners etc etc.....i mean on team of the Spanish Federation. By the way, i cant wait to get involved in this event.....superb! -----------------

Probably at least 60 people are involved in one way or another. I like the venue better than last year as it is more compact. There are less players in the international for various reasons but it will still be great tournament. Look forward to seeing those of you who are coming.

And that's what we need here when we get the new tour up and running. We need volunteers who will walk the walk!

When we are preparing these big tournaments we have to start many months in advance. The office work before we even get to a tournament can involve around ten people. You can't really compare one of our tournaments with one of yours because we are dealing with various tournaments that are being played at the same time. This week for example there are seventeen competitions taking place during the week. We use a conference centre or a large hotel etc and we start by carpeting the whole area then we install, in this case, 48 X 7' tables, 24 x 9' tables and one snooker table. This is all done by our own people. As we run from 10.00 a.m until midnight at least, every day during the 7 days we use two teams of people working in turns. A typical team will consist of a Director of Sports who is in charge of the tournament plus up to four on the tournament desk working on the computers. We usually have a computer expert to deal with any problems that may arise as well as keeping the cameras working. On the main floor there will be a head referee with a team of about 8 referees. There will be a person in charge of maintenance in case of any table problems, he will have people on call to help out when necessary We will have two or three people on the registration desk checking in the players who are arriving nearly every day. They hand out about 1500 identification badges which will have been prepared in advance plus free T shirts. We have a team of girls who constantly go around the room picking up the empty glasses etc. that players leave behind. Some will pick up the individual score sheets and return them to the tournament desk. We need people to keep the flow charts up to date every time a match finishes. Then we will have all sorts of people like me for instance who will look after visitors and act as interpreters for those who don't speak Spanish. We have a press office who is constant touch with press, television etc. Also quite importantly we have our accountant here at various times during the day to pay out prizes and so on and so on [ This message was edited by: malaguista on 2007-07-03 13:36 ]

Quite a bit as they all get paid around 50 euros per day plus around 30 euros per day for food plus hotel.
