I guess the answer would be divisions and do away with a handicap altogether, the problem is though its hard to get enougth players to do several divisions.
The next problem is getting players to turn up every week in leagues, hence the reason all the clubs do knockouts instead of leagues hopefully the fact you pay up front will help this.
Its such a shame though 8Ball Pool theres tons of leagues and it works But 9Ball doesnt seem to work the same.
I think its a debate that can run and run.
But good luck pete i hope it does work out. There is plenty of Pro Tours etc but very few tournaments or Leagues to get the complete novice interested.

9M - As Rileys are Europes largest operator of pool and snooker and own a high percentage of UK pool venues it seemed an obvious choice to start with Rileys. We have done a deal for 73 clubs for this year, in addition we have 1private club so far, PLAY in bexleyheath. The reason thatmore provate clubs have not been approached is simply due to time. I will be approaching this in the new year after the full launch in January.

All the best for the launch in January Teach - hope it gets support it deserves. It's possibly the best thing to happen to the growth of UK 9-ball in a very long time. I'll certainly be there being part of it and I'm sure there's plenty of other pro9 members / visitors who will too .

Thanks for the kind words expertfluke. As you know from the St Albans league it was always my intention to create an amateur playing community and I hope we will achieve that.

Closing date for all entries is 5th January.
£35 can be paid in two instalments £17.50 with the entry form and the remainder (£17.50) by the end of January.
Please let us know if clubs on the list are not being very helpful in terms of entries etc... and we will chase them

Im a bit late following this subject, i see 412 has a few objections regarding handicaping. i live in bangkok where i am well respacted for my pool, this means im well known and when i enter handicap tournaments around bangkok i get heavily handicaped. Last year i played my mates wife in the first round of one tournament, i had to win 9 she had to win 2, well she fluked the 9 in the first frame, i pulled 7 racks back and left her 6789 in the 9th rack, bless her, she potted all 4 balls, she was so happy to beat me she cried. To see her reaction after she won, i can tell you, it was worth loosing. But even with my handicap, i still win the odd tournament now and again, for me its not the money, its participation and a personal challenge against all the odds, the same as it was when i played snooker many years ago and had to give 50 or 60 starts. Its the same for the guys who they just want to participate, with a bit of a chance of winning. Tournaments out there without handicap get small entries, same as what will happen to this event if not handicaped, but i know a small bar with only 4 tables, their monthly handicap tournament attracts over 50 entries, and women win as much as the men. Thats the reason they get a fairly good turn out and long may it last.
Happy xmaz all

What's you take on the handicaps expertfluke? Or should that be "screwedbyhandicap"?

On 2006-12-14 00:25 , 412-414 Wrote:!!! QUOTE !!! Handicaps worked in 2 ways. You would either give a 1,2 or 3 rack start and most players didn't have to pot all the balls. Some players would only need to pot 4 consecutive balls so a rack could be over with 5 balls left, this included fluked balls by the way.
Both of the handicap systems worked side by side. So last year an average game for me was giving a 3 rack start and the other guy had to pot 6/7 balls. NOT EASY.
When i told APN what a pathetic system it was, their reply was that if you're a good enough player you will win anyway. Its still too tough thou. Only one of the systems should be used its just so stupid to combine them.
Another point made by APN was that even if you do lose a couple of games you will still qualify for the knock out stage (top 4 qualified) which maybe is a fair point, BUT THEN THEY KEPT THE STUPID SYSTEM IN THE KNOCKOUT STAGES!!! I've got to say that it was a big big big shambles last time. Please make it fair to everyone this time please.
Oh one more thing. They judge your handicap level as the league progresses WHICH DOESN'T WORK. Last year i played the worst 2 players in my league first and beat them both heavily. At the next session my handicap had been put up to maximum. Then when i played any half decent player i couldn't afford a single mistake.
This really is my last point (for now). When you are playing someone who doesn't need to pot all the balls you are not playing 9ball. You are constantly making sure the next few balls are tough rather than playing the game how it should be played. It was like putting a colour safe in snooker when you've just knocked in a 50 break.
I really could go on and on about it i really could. I take it that you are one of those people who think they should win every time they step to the table. APN league was set up to encourage players who are not so good to give it go and learn to pot more balls in row. perhaps you should not play and give the lesser player some encouragement in potting more balls and also the safty side of the game instead of slagging something you know nothing about.

i run a handicap tournament which the players are handicap by the balls ie if you are a -2 and you are playing a player who is a +7 it would give you a difference of 9 which means the +7 player only has to pot either 3,5,7 or the 9 in any rack race to 5 how do you feel about that 412-414. the way it works is that you break off and you pot a ball on the break you then have to pot the 1 ball 2 ball and the 3 ball to win but if you do not pot a ball on the break and your apponant pots 3,4,5 and rattles the 6 then you have to pot the 6 & 7 ball to win that rack. Now if you are playing a player who is -2 then he is good enough to run the rack.

Nipper is 'your version of Raj' going to the Nationals? Mr Sagoo I think he's called and was once number 1 on the the BPPPA tour. I'm sure he told you that? Tut Tut if he forgot.
