i cannot believe this has gone on this long
1. reyes 2. hendry 3. daz appleton
the third is not just cause he will see it but based on the fact he dominated 8 ball marbles and has since started to shine at american especially at the ipt and personally i would say if it had continued he would have won one
the problem i see with picking the greatest cueist is that all cue sports are 90% mental 10% skill IMO and a great cueist with no bottle will always lose to an ok cueist with loadsa heart
if jimmy had had the mental game sorted i dont think we would be debating this issue cause he would have been 10 time world champ

1.Earl strickland. probably the most naturally talented and inspiring player ever.
2.Buddy Hall. Love his stroke. so smooth. and i don't think he's ever run out of position in his life.
3. Mark Williams. Because i want a snooker player in there. He's a natural. he hardly practices and just gets down and pots everything. whilst looking half asleep. such a shame he doesn't have much motivation anymore.
Honourable mentions. (because top three is not enough)
Hendry. His game is pure offence, attacking and brutal. when you leave a long red with the white on the cushion and he knocks it in like a hanger and proceeds to clear up it must be demoralising to say the least.he was a monster.
Reyes. Nuff said. plays everything well. Best mental game ever i would say as well.
Semih Sayginer. watch his magic show dvd. i still cant believe it's real.

For me, if Stephen Hendry would have played 9ball instead of snooker, imagine how good he would have been ?
Hendry in his prime just did not miss, excellent cuiest and probably the finest pressure player ever.
Ive been reading a few of the replies, and personally I cant see Efren Reyes or any other 9ball player making 100 breaks on a pontins table, they'd struggle to get 30 nevermind a 100.
This debate could just go on and on, but for me the greatest player to ever hold a wooden cue is Stephen Hendry.
Most talented id say could be Chris Melling or Ronnie O'Sullivan
Best Cueist, well id have to say Peter Lines, ive never ever seen a more perfect technique and beautiful cue action as his, and he's never won anything to mention !
I just cant help but think, if ANY top snooker player turned to 9ball full time, who knows ?
For me, the 9ball players ( as good as they are ) have appalling techniques, cue actions, stance, bridge, everything is just so wrong, but it seems to work.
If potting balls on a 9 ball table was as hard as a pontins snooker table, then all these top players everyone talks about would'nt make half as many shots.
My opinion is, in 9ball there is soooooo much margin for error its frightning, even the worst cueists can make the game look easy. Now in snooker, you have to have a technique, you miss by a fraction and the balls just dont go in. Thats soooooo not the case in 9ball.
The start of the thread was who was the greatest of our time, well in snooker its withoubt any doubt Stephen Hendry, his record speaks for itself.
In pool, probably Efren Reyes with what everyone else is saying.
So, its down to 2 players, Reyes or Hendry.
If Reyes played Hendry at snooker, he wouldn't win a frame or hardly make a break on a match table.
Hendry played Reyes on a pool table, well you'd have to fancy Reyes, but Hendry would make balls and would win racks in the alternate break format, and could give him a game even if its one sided in favour of Reyes.
If Hendry practised and dedicated himself to 9ball and 12 months down the line he were to play Reyes, then my money would be on Hendry, absolutely no question in my mind.
Hendry is the greatest cue sprotsman ever.

In the Philippines I saw him knock in a 140 break with a house pool cue the tip the size of a broom handle on a table with rips, ciggerette burns, dodgy rolls (more than your average rileys snooker table)...... remember, efren has been playing cue sports for over 40 years, for you to say that if hendry plays 9 ball for 12 months and he then plays Efren for money and you would fancy Hendry is crazy but hey, your entitled to your opinion but I don't think many here would agree with you. Hendry, may be recognised in this country as a great cue sports man but Reyes is recognised all over the world as one of the greatest, a living legend [ This message was edited by: sam_betfair on 2007-06-17 14:45 ]

Fair enough matey, not doubting Reyes as a talent, but I bet you anything he didnt knock in those breaks on a proper match cut pontins table, if he did id have to see it to believe it.
More than likely he may have made those breaks on a table with massive pockets, but I stand by what I said, he would not win a frame against Hendry playing well on a pontins table.
Hendry is just as recognised as Reyes mate ?

......blimey i've had a 70 with my pool cue on a match cut table and i'm trash in comparison. I'm pretty sure Efren could win a few frames and knock in a couple of centuries because snooker, pool and every other cuesport/discipline have a major factor in common - if you're at the table and playing well; it doesn't matter a jot whether it's Hendry, Efren or my uncoordinated 11 year old nephew sitting in the chair waiting for their turn. I'm not saying Hendry wouldn't win, but to say Efren wouldn't win a frame seems a little ott imo.

I think maybe mine and your idea of a match table are two different kettles of fish buddy If Chris Melling or any other PIOS snooker player is on this forum, then I reckon there the lads to ask if they reckon Reyes, Strickland, Bustamante etc etc could make a break on those tables. They simply dont have the cue action and technique to do it, you cant make breaks with a cue action as loose as some of the pool players on a PIOS table. Impossible imho. On generous pockets, then so be it, but not down there, and thats what I was refering too when I mentioned Hendry vs Reyes. Reyes would not win a frame.

I have played at Pontins loads of times and I can safely say that the pockets are ridiculously tight. They will be like no other table for tightness.

cant be bothered to reply pointless cusack no problem with you and not getting into a arguement with you over cuesportsman etc i just dont like your views and you twisting my words !
anyway
my top 3 would be
1.efren reyes won major titles at every dicipline his played won the biggest prize ever in cuesports ipt world 8ball champs. and his won everything big tournament his played in ,and if played every dicipline against any other player he couldnt lose!
his just a freak of nature!
2.ronnie o sullivan
pure magic shame about his head orelse he would have been the most successful player ever at snooker..but also the standard of snooker gone through the roof. theres no easy draws now unlike the old days ! but his the best player have ever seen but didnt have the head and maybe of the table things have had big effect on him shame!
3.cant decide on this one mike sigal/earl strickland/hendry/davis/varner/buddy hall/bustamante/pagulyan/ many more
