Guys, Im having problems with my break. I have tried hard and soft breaks, watched videos on the web, but I still cant get a ball down regulary. If in the case I do get one in its been kicked in, and I find this a little frustrating. Is there any tips you can give? Your help from playing off the rail has helped me hugely, and would love some more pro help from here if anyone can help me? Thanks, Dazza ----------------- Twitter: @Darren_Foord

The secret to the break in 9-Ball is two-fold:
1. Learn how to rack the balls so your chances of making the wing ball or 1 ball are higher.
2. Learn how to consistantly hit the 1 ball accurately in a couple of places, either on the nose, or with a slight cut should be enough to get you started.
With practise you will find out that the real secret to breaking in 9-ball is in the way the balls are racked. In theory you should try to get all balls touching. This can prove to be hard sometimes, in which case there are some balls in the rack that it's more important to have frozen than others. You will learn this with practise and being observant about what sort of rack you have and what result you get when you break.
Hope this helps a little.

Do you have your own Rack or do you use club racks? Makes a huge amount of difference.

So what makes the best racker? Is it about positioning the balls in a non-random order, putting the one ball above or below the spot, or maybe twisting the rack a little. All of which I consider to be cheating. Or is it simply about getting all the balls touching? So is 9 ball about being the best racker or the best cheat?

When you put it like that i would say the best cheat. Problem with 9ball is that this is part of the game im afraid.......travel anywhere where the balls are not tpped and you will find this out once your cash is on the table.....and i dont care who the player is! -----------------

It's about racking. In an ideal world all the balls would touch, but on club tables, due to the condition of the cloth, it's nigh on impossible. What is important (as eluded to above) is that certain balls must be touching to ensure the best chance of getting the wing ball. And if there is gaps, understanding what impact that will have. I can thoroughly recommend “Racking Secrets” DVD by Joe Tucker. In it you’ll also learn how to maximise your chance of Golden Breaks … but that would be cheating!

As said before... Tight racks and very accurate aiming makes for great breaks.

I think that sums it up nicely Dazzler. For many (not all mid you!) of the UK players migrating from english pool / snooker they have a big ethical problem with trying to gain advantage by unfair means (i.e. by not following the rules or the spirit of the rules). But I agree with you that it's very clear it is part of the game and that's one thing I hate about 9 ball. It's often not an issue for average players but once you start trying to move your game forward and step up so you can try and challenge the big boys you find yourself wondering if you should learn how to cheat. So the more conciencious amongst us have to just get over it and accept it or play something else. 10 ball is the future! [ This message was edited by: Riggers on 2007-01-30 11:49 ]

I like to test people to see if they can actually pot a ball at the same speed and distance that they break from... Try it! If you can't pot the ball consistently at the same pace, you'll know where you are going wrong!

Also try sourcing a "BreakRak" they're superb for practising breaking hard with accuracy I'm sure PC said he had 1. Might be worth a PM.

Just to say, using the tips you all helped me with - I had mixed results with the brake tonight. When I did everything right it worked like a treat, I even had a golden, but sometimes I would just do something wrong with my follow through and didnt get the reaction from the balls I wanted. To sum up, when I did what you said, It worked, it was my own errors and learning that stopped me from being spot on everytime. Like trying to force it abit more than I should at times etc. ...Still, I won 11-8

Mmm... I like to give the balls a good whack - but since getting a Predator BK2 i discovered it was the rack and doing a smooth but quick break not that powerful but it still varies which is annoying. But get a good break going and your whole game will improve 10 - 20%

After talking to quite a few of the top players in CT and they all said if you want to improve your 9ball game, you have to improve your break which means pratice, try and find some ppl who have strong breaks and learn from them, you can watch videos and read books but nothing beats table time, good luck
