Hello,

I am a Dutch student doing market research for American Pool as a leisure activity in England.
For my research I would like to have some info about English citizens, how you think about pool. And to compare the situation in the United Kingdom to the situation in Holland.
I would like to know things like how many members there are in the English pool association or how popular American pool is, compared with Snooker or English pool.
And are there enough facilities to play American pool or should there be more?
If you could help me with my project I would really appreciate this!

Kind Regards,

Maarten de Witte

hi maarten.

Rileys is the main place to go for cue sports (especially american pool) with over 165 clubs over the country. In my experiance american pool is normally more popular than snooker or english pool. Not as many people take pool as seriously as they do snooker because the money is not as good in pool as it is in snooker.

Saying that american pool (especially 9 ball) is an up and coming game and will soon hopefully be up there in the money with snooker and English pool

Hope this helps

Adam

P.s this is only my opinion, others may see this differently

I agree Ads but the one thing that the UK lacks is top quality pools tables in clubs. Although rileys is the main club for american cue sports, there are not enough clubs out there with top tables.

Will someone out there please open a club with 20 Metro tournament edition tables in which are pristine preferably near mansfield.......LoL

P.S don't let underage drunken kids play on them neither with there spilt pints and greasy fast food on the 860 cloths!!!!

I have only heard bad things about SAM Billiard tables but unfortunatly this is all we get to play on in the UK.

American cue sports is on the up though in the UK especially with the new GB9BT in the new year.

I hope that last comment gets me on the tour!!!!!......LoL

I wouldn't say American Pool is more popular than Snooker or English Pool.

The problem in the uk is that the government doesnt really invest in sports too a level to produce a higher number of world class performers across the board!

In terms of pool it doesnt recognise american or english pool as a serious sport and from my knowledge doesnt offer any of the governing bodies of pool in the UK funding

Id have to agree with buckster in the popularity stakes! Its rising tho. Too further the game in the UK it needs more coverage and sponsorship to entice younger players to go the american pool route insted of snooker. If the UK could produce a major competition that would definately help.

Like someone mentioned above. The uk definately needs more clubs willing to invest in top quality tables that would be a great start and will hopefully happen soon!

I agree Dazza, the only problem with people opening clubs up with metro tables is the money situation. They would open up a place, have to have some kind of age limit to save spilled drinks. Then they would have to put the prices up to cover costs as the younger players wouldnt be able to go. It just gets worse from there. Although i do agree that a few places with a nice set of metro's would be quite nice

without a shred of doubt the biggest problem pool faces in england is ignorance to the game, in relation to snooker. most people stubbornly instantly dismiss it as a trash game that's 'easier'. "look at the size of the pockets" "snooker's harder"

it's really not respected at all and even a lot of the people who play it say snooker's better. even a quick browse on youtube comments tells you a lot. read what the english people say about pool.

christ most people even prefer english pool to it. (i make no bones about it i don't like the game, too small and piddly)

a club with brunswick gold crowns with shimmed pockets would be better (my opinion)

"The Pool Pit" at the AMF Bowl in Havant/Portsmouth has 12 Brunswick Gold Crown tables - very nice!

maybe clubs should follow this example and have a few more with decent tables. I mean rileys has done me well over the years but sometimes you get some tables that have been ruined by spilled drinks ect. maybe they should have a vip section in rileys for players they know will not damage them and put some metro/brunswick tables in them

From market research that I have conducted for my business I have found out that there are (approx figures) 7.5million Cuesport players (all disciplines) in the UK & N.I.

Around 4.5 million of those players are deemed as "regular" players by playing at least once per week.

Around 75% of those players are UK Pool players and the vast majority play in their local pub.

Of the remainder snooker comes out on top but the figures are very vague.

American Pool is still a growth area and although many players do play the game now and again "regular" players and "competitive regulars" are very minimal.

Hope this helps

In my local Riley's thay have a separate room with 2 snooker tables in 1 of which Gary Wilkinson practices on. I had a word with the manager whilst the club was being refurbed to see if they would put a top quality american pool table in the private room, the answer i got was NO!!!!............Point blank.

i think that would be a good itea dazza, even if they hiched the prices up by a small amount. I would rather pay slightly more for a top quality pool table. Maybe its something that we could suggest to the head office of Rileys

Soon I will hear if I can start at Loontjens as an intern. I applied there for an internship for a few weeks and I hope to hear from them soon and that I can use this information for my work there.

it sure looks that way.... so here is my first question:
it seems like Sam Billiards is causing some complaints with players.... how is that?
what is wrong with these tables?
