WOODWARD KNOCKS ALCAIDE OUT OF DAFABET WORLD POOL MASTERS
Defending champion eliminated as Van Boening and Kaci advance

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

Preliminary Round
Shane Van Boening 7-3
Jakub Koniar
Last 16
Naoyuki Oi 5-7 Eklent Kaci
David Alcaide 3-7 Skyler Woodward

Skyler Woodward knocked defending champion David Alcaide out of the Dafabet World Pool Masters with a 7-3 last 16 win at Europa Sports Complex, Gibraltar.

Eklent Kaci is also through to the quarter-finals after an eventful 7-5 win over Naoyuki Oi, while Shane van Boening won the last of the preliminary round matches with a 7-4 success over Jakub Koniar.

Despite losing the first rack after a missed 8 against the US No.1, Koniar was able to build a 4-1 lead with some sharp shooting. After the thinnest of cuts on the 1 early in the sixth, the Slovakian missed the 6 ball and Van Boening made it with the bridge.

The American won this event back-to-back in 2014 and ’15, and the key then was his ability to break and run, leaving his opponents marooned in their chair. Van Boening did that to Koniar to make it 4-3 and though the eighth wasn’t so straight forward, a tricky cut on the 3 denied the Slovakian a fifth rack and Van Boening was able to level at 4-4.

A brilliant clearance oozed class from Van Boening to go 5-4 up and he ran the next to reach the hill. A good break also left a straight-forward shot on the 2, and Van Boening had a road map to the quarter-finals. The American cleared the table to win 7-4 and will face Fedor Gorst in the last 16.

FILLER FIRES INTO QUARTER FINALS OF DAFABET WORLD POOL MASTERS
Wins for Feijen, Fortunski and Grabe in Gibraltar

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

Preliminary Round
Niels Feijen 7–3
Jeffrey De Luna
Mieszko Fortunski 7-2 Kristina Tkach
Denis Grabe 7-6 Roberto Gomez
Last 16
Joshua Filler 7–5 Chris Melling

Joshua Filler staved off a Chris Melling fightback to advance to the quarter-finals of the Dafabet World Pool Masters, while there were preliminary round wins for Niels Feijen, Mieszko Fortunski and Denis Grabe at Europa Sports Complex in Gibraltar.

Filler held a 5-1 lead over Melling before the Yorkshireman fought back to 5-5, only to see the recent World Cup winner complete a 7-5 win. That followed a hill-hill win for Grabe over Roberto Gomez and an emphatic 7-2 success for Fortunski over Russia’s Kristina Tkach.

The session had opened with a 7-3 win for two-time Masters champion for Feijen, who put together a six-pack to beat Filipino Jeff De Luna.

De Luna marched to a 2-0 lead and had made balls on each of his first three breaks, but Feijen was able to half the deficit in the third after his opponent had gifted him ball in hand with a missed snooker early in the rack.

Feijen overcut the 2 in the next rack and found himself 3-1 down. He pulled one back in the next and levelled after De Luna’s attempt to jump the 3 sent the cue ball flying off the table. Then, the Dutchman took the lead thanks to a 4-ball kick for a golden break. Two more racks made it five in a row for Feijen, who was now on the hill at 6-3.

Breaking for the match, the two-time Masters champion had balls down and an open table but overcut the 8 to the tight corner pocket, and De Luna had a lifeline. However, he was hooked and had to kick at the 8, but left it open for Feijen who riffled it home to the top corner and this time Feijen made no mistake, winning the match 7-3 to set up a last 16 tie with Jayson Shaw.

“There is always pressure on the first game but I am glad I got over the line,” said Feijen. “You have to compose yourself because the game can get away from you in the winner breaks format, and he knows that as well.”

Woodward Fires Past Thorpe As Sajich, Kaci And Melling Advance At Dafabet World Pool Masters

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

Preliminary Round
Kelly Fisher 3-7 Justin Sajich
Eklent Kaci 7-3 Petri Makkonen
Chris Melling 7–4 Sanjin Pehlivanovic
Billy Thorpe 1-7 Skyler Woodward

Skyler Woodward inflicted a 7-1 defeat on Mosconi Cup teammate Billy Thorpe to advance to the last 16 of the Dafabet World Pool Masters, while Justin Sajich, Eklent Kaci and Chris Melling also progressed on the opening evening of play at Europa Sports Complex, Gibraltar.

With fans returning to the Matchroom Pool arena for the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, those lucky enough to have a ticket were treated to a top-class evening of pool.

Sajich registered a 7-3 win over Women’s World Champion 7-3 before Petri Makkonen suffered the same reversal against Kaci. Melling beat Sanjin Pehlivanovic with the performance of the night, a 7-4 win against a debutant who acquitted himself well.

In the evening’s opening match, Sajich ran the second rack after coming out on top of a safety battle from Fisher’s break in the first. The Australian looked set to lead 3-0 but missed the 9, allowing the Women’s World Champion to half her deficit.

Sajich took the fourth but broke dry and Fisher was back to within one at 3-2 down. However, she was soon three down after Sajich won the sixth and made a golden break to go 5-2 up thanks to a kick from the 3.

The Australian reached the hill after Fisher couldn’t bank the 4 to safety after a great jump on the 3. A brilliant 1/9 kept Fisher in it but the 4 thwarted her in the next, and Sajich cleared the table for a 7-3 victory to set up a last-16 clash with Greece’s Alex Kazakis.

Germany Beat Great Britain To Lift World Cup Of Pool

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

FINAL
Great Britain 6-11 Germany

Germany’s Joshua Filler and Christof Reintjes defeated Great Britain 11-6 to land their nation’s second World Cup of Pool title.

The pair rode their luck at times in the final and also took advantage of some missed opportunities by the Great Britain pair of Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes, who were looking to complete a fairy tale comeback. The duo won the World Cup in 2014 and returned at the last minute as late substitutes to this year’s event.

Having crushed Netherlands in the quarter-finals and Slovakia in the semis, the British momentum came to an end at the hands of Germany, who last won the World Cup in 2011 when Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann took the trophy in Manilla.

“This final had so many ups and downs,” said Filler, who shares the $60,000 winner’s prize with Reintjes. “We both missed a 9-ball and made it and without these two 9-balls I don’t think we would have done the tournament because these two gentleman played so unbelievable throughout the tournament. They put in a great final and in the end we were the lucky guys.

Great Britain To Meet Germany In World Cup Of Pool Final

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport

SEMI-FINALS
Great Britain C 9 - 0 Slovakia
Germany 9 - 7 Estonia

Great Britain will face Germany in the World Cup of Pool final after a faultless display by Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes against Slovakia was followed by a fighting comeback from 7-2 by Germany, who beat Estonia 9-7.

Late entrants Appleton and Boyes kept their remarkable dream alive as they kept Slovakian pair Jakub Koniar and Jaroslav Polach in their seats for almost the entire match, completing only the second semi-final whitewash in World Cup history with a 9-0 win.

Appleton made a tough long 9 the take the first rack and send a warning shot to the rest of the field; the 2014 winners were well and truly back. If that wasn’t warning enough, they shut Slovakia out of the match, taking three more ranks for a 4-0 lead. A safety battle in the fifth gave Slovakia a chance but Boyes slammed in a difficult 2 to end the exchange, and Great Britain cleared for a 5-0 lead.

It was an incredible performance, even more so given their late notice to enter the event. GB were near faultless; Appleton had a 6 ball that rattled before dropping in the sixth, but otherwise it was the centre of the pocket every time for the Brits.

They had to play safe after the break at 7-0 up and remarkable that brought Polach his first shot since winning the lag. He had to try a kicked safety but the 1 landed in the jaws of the bottom corner pocket and Boyes was able to do enough to make the 1 and keep the cue ball on the table.

That was Slovakia’s last visit. The result was the first World Cup semi-final whitewash since Finland’s win over Canada in 2007, and Polach could only admiringly describe Britain’s performance as ‘a destruction’.

“Pool is all about chances,” said Boyes. “I left Appleton a long 9 in the first, he knocked it in and it snowballed. We didn’t make any mistakes. They did that to Austria and have been on the receiving end now and the same could happen to us in the final, you never know.

Germany To Meet Estonia In World Cup Of Pool Semi-Finals

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport

QUARTER-FINALS
Denmark 5-9 Germany
Philippines 4-9 Estonia

Germany will meet Estonia in the World Cup of Pool semi-finals after beating Denmark and Philippines respectively at Stadium MK, Milton Keynes on Thursday evening.

After Great Britain and Slovakia had won through in the afternoon session, Germany saw off Denmark 9-5 with both Joshua Filler and Christof Reintjes performing strongly, and the story was the same for Estonia as Denis Grabe and Mark Magi eliminated Philippines 9-4.

There was nothing to split Denmark (Mickey Krause & Bahram Lotfy) and Germany (Joshua Filler & Christof Reintjes) after the first eight of a potential 17 racks. Germany took the ninth and then Filler delivered his second golden break of the tournament to put his country two ahead, the first time either of them had a lead of more than one.

Denmark pulled one back but Germany extended their lead again, and then made it 8-5 with a 7/9 combo left for Filler by Lotfy.

Germany didn’t have a shot after breaking on the hill but got the better of the safety exchange and once they had a chance, Filler and Reintjes didn’t allow Denmark back to the table.

“We made twice as many balls on the break as they did, I think that and our safety game was out big advantage in the match,” said Filler. “The focus is playing the best you can. In this format, with winner breaks, your opponent can make five or six runouts but you just have to focus on yourself.

Great Britain Demolish Dutch To Face Slovakia In World Cup Semis

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

QUARTER-FINALS
Slovakia 9-8
Japan
Great Britain 9-1 Netherlands

Great Britain’s Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton rolled back the years with an emphatic 9-1 World Cup quarter-final victory over Netherlands to advance to the semi-finals, where Slovakia lie in wait after a hill-hill win over Japan.

Boyes and Appleton, winners in 2014 when they beat Netherlands in a dramatic final, were late call-ups to the event after Canada suffered from travel issues. After beating South Africa and Greece, the pair originally called Great Britain ‘C’ were the only host nation team remaining.

An enthralling opening-rack safety battle finally ended when an Appleton jump untied the 3 and 8 from the side rail, and Bijsterbosch’s subsequent jump removed both the 1 and the 3. That wasn’t the end, though, and when Feijen missed a bank on the 4, it was Great Britain who were able to clear to take the lead.

A break and run doubled the hosts’ advantage and they moved 3-0 up in the third. Netherlands had a chance in the fourth but when Feijen missed a 4, Great Britain pulled further away. A break and run took them to 5-0, and rack six also went the way of the 2014 champions.

The Dutch returned to the table in rack 7 after Appleton played poor position to the 4, leaving Boyes no option but to go safe. It was Britain’s first error of the match and they were made to pay when Appleton’s next shot, a cut on the 4, failed to find the pocket and Netherlands cleared to finally get on the board.

But that proved to be the only miss of the match from Great Britain, who took the next three racks for an unlikely place in the semi-finals.

“It is unbelievable,” said Boyes. “The deeper these events go, even though it’s been a long time, we have plenty of experience together and you can smell blood.

“We know how well the Dutch have played this week but it’s a quarter-final and they knew how much experience we had. Our game plan and the way we communicated, it was spot on.”

Dramatic Night Sees Great Britain A and USA Crash Out Of World Cup Of Pool

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

ROUND TWO
Great Britain C 7-4
Greece
USA 5–7 Philippines
Estonia 7–6 Great Britain A

Great Britain A crashed out of the World Cup of Pool in the most agonising of circumstances as Jayson Shaw scratched with two balls remaining at hill-hill against Estonia.

Earlier in the evening Philippines had won seven consecutive racks to come from 5-0 down to beat USA in a match that had it all and will live long in the memory, while Great Britain C’s comeback continued with a 7-4 success over Greece to reach the quarter-finals.

Shaw and Chris Melling had beaten Belarus in the first round to face Estonia (Denis Grabe and Mark Magi) in the final second round fixture. Neither team were at their best in the first half of the match and after eight racks it was 4-4. The hosts looked set to move ahead until Melling scratched on the 6. Estonia did the rest and reached the hill in rack ten after some good safety play. Magi’s break wasn’t firm enough and to add insult to injury, not only did he fail to make a ball but he left a shot at the 1 for Shaw.

Russia 2-7 Japan
Italy 5–7 Denmark
Germany 7-4 Kuwait

Japan, Denmark and Germany all won through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup of Pool during Wednesday afternoon’s play at Stadium MK, Milton Keynes.

Japan (Naoyuki Oi and Masato Yoshioka) were emphatic in victory over Russia, whose pair was World Champion Fedor Gorst and playing partner Sergey Lutsker. Denmark then took the initiative from 5-5 to defeat Italy, and the session concluded with Germany taking a 7-4 win over Kuwait.

The first two racks of the opening match were shared and it was Japan who took the third to lead Russia 2-1. They broke dry in the fourth but Gorst wasn’t able to successfully jump the 1 and Japan were able to take a two-rack lead that some became 4-1.

Russia pulled one back in the sixth but a cruel kick from the 7 saw Gorst scratch on the break and Japan were able to run the table again. Oi and Yoshioka were making balls on the break and got to the hill at 6-2 thanks to another run out, and they took full advantage of the winner breaks format to take the next rack for a place in the quartet-finals where they will meet Slovakia.
