TEAM ASIA CLAIM VICTORY AT THE INAUGURAL REYES CUP

Team Asia emerged victorious at the inaugural Reyes Cup, defeating Team Europe 11-6 in a thrilling finale at the Ninoy Aquino National Stadium in Manila.

In partnership with Puyat Sports, this landmark event brings Asia’s top players head-to-head against Europe’s finest in a high-stakes competition on the World Nineball Tour. The tournament is being broadcast globally by Cignal TV in the Philippines and Sky Sports in the UK.

Overall Score after Day Four: Team Europe 6-11 Team Asia
• David Alcaide 5-4 Johann Chua
• Francisco Sanchez Ruiz & Mickey Krause 3-5 Ko Pin Yi & Duong Quoc Hoang
• Jayson Shaw 5-3 Carlo Biado
• Jayson Shaw 5-2 Duong Quoc Hoang
• Francisco Sanchez Ruiz 1-5 Aloysius Yapp

The day kicked off with a nail-biting match between Johann Chua and David Alcaide. Chua’s dry break in the first rack gave Alcaide the early advantage, though a miss on the 2-ball left Alcaide scrambling. Chua had his chance to close the gap, but a twitch on the 7-ball allowed the Spaniard to seize control.

Chua managed to fight back with a clever bank shot, but another twitch on the 9-ball allowed Alcaide to take a 3-1 lead. Chua then pounced on Alcaide’s scratch with a 2-9 combo and levelled the score after a missed shot from Alcaide. However, a golden break from Alcaide brought the match to a thrilling 4-4, and when Chua scratched in the deciding rack, Alcaide secured the win.

THE INAUGURAL REYES CUP | TEAM ASIA EXTENDS LEAD OVER TEAM EUROPE ON PENULTIMATE DAY

Team Asia delivered another powerful performance on the third day of the inaugural Reyes Cup, widening their lead over Team Europe in this historic competition at the Ninoy Aquino National Stadium in Manila, Philippines. With only one day remaining, Team Asia now holds a commanding 9-3 lead.

In partnership with Puyat Sports, this landmark event brings Asia’s top players head-to-head against Europe’s finest in a high-stakes competition on the World Nineball Tour. The tournament is being broadcast globally by Cignal TV in the Philippines and Sky Sports in the UK.

Overall Score after Day Three: Team Europe 3-9 Team Asia
• Match Ten: Team Europe 1-5 Team Asia
• Match Eleven: Jayson Shaw & Francisco Sanchez Ruiz 5-4 Johann Chua & Ko Pin Yi
• Match Twelve: Jayson Shaw & Eklent Kaçi 3-5 Carlo Biado & Aloysius Yapp

Team Europe won the lag in Match Ten, but Jayson Shaw was unable to complete a break-and-run, missing the 6-ball and allowing Aloysius Yapp to steal the first rack. In the second, Duong Quoc Hoang attempted a 2-9 carom but gave control of the table to Francisco Sanchez Ruiz after missing the shot. However, Ruiz’s own mistake on the 6-ball let Duong clean up and take the second rack for Asia.

Mickey Krause faltered on a critical 9-ball in the next rack, gifting Carlo Biado an opportunity to extend Team Asia’s lead to 3-0. Asia’s dominance continued, with Ko Pin Yi executing a perfect break-and-run to reach the hill. Eklent Kaçi finally put Europe on the board with a break-and-run of his own, but Aloysius Yapp sealed Asia’s victory with a final runout, ending the Teams Match 5-1.

Team Asia extended their lead with a dominant whitewash on the second day of the inaugural Reyes Cup, held at the Ninoy Aquino National Stadium in Manila, Philippines, from October 15-18, 2024.

In partnership with Puyat Sports, this landmark event brings Asia’s top players head-to-head against Europe’s finest in a high-stakes competition on the World Nineball Tour. The tournament is being broadcast globally by Cignal TV in the Philippines and Sky Sports in the UK.

• Match Nine: Mickey Krause 3-5 Carlo Biado

Team Asia secured their first Teams Match victory to kick off Day Two of the Reyes Cup, despite falling behind early on. A scratch from Ko Pin Yi in the opening rack handed Jayson Shaw the chance to sweep, giving Europe an early lead. Eklent Kaçi then extended the advantage with the first golden break of the evening. However, Duong Quoc Hoang responded for Team Asia, narrowing the gap in the third rack against Francisco Sanchez Ruiz with a series of well-executed safety shots, building on his strong form from Day One. In the fourth rack, Aloysius Yapp fouled on a safety battle, but David Alcaide returned the error, allowing Yapp to level the score with a precise 2-9 combination.

Carlo Biado went on to move Team Asia ahead after defeating Mickey Krause in the fifth rack, but Shaw quickly levelled things for Europe in the next. Johann Chua then regained the lead for Asia, breaking and sweeping the table against Kaçi in the seventh rack. In the final moments, Francisco Sanchez Ruiz had a chance to even the score, but a dry break gave Duong Quoc Hoang the upper hand. Hoang’s tactical safety play sealed the deal as he swept the final rack, securing Team Asia’s first Teams Match victory.

Shaw's momentum carried into the fourth day, with two commanding wins as he continues his impressive title defence. Shaw first faced young American Landon Hollingsworth in the Last 64 and quickly built a 7-3 lead. However, Hollingsworth fought back, capitalising on a few errors to close in on Shaw, who waited on the hill. Just when it seemed Landon would level the score, a crucial missed 3-ball allowed Shaw back to the table, where he fluked the 9-ball to claim a narrow 10-8 victory.

Shaw wasted no time in the Last 32, delivering a dominant 10-3 win over China’s Wang Ming, becoming the first player to qualify for the Last 16 as he continues his relentless title defence.
